Ran 4.88s in my 30 front for years. Not one issue. Just do it!
I've grown tired of this.

Stock engine when those gears went?  Was it due to any other type of failure that caused a rapid energy unload?

My good buddy broke 3 sets of 4.88's in his HP 30.

1 was the head sheared off the pinion and it fell out the housing, the other 2 broke 3-5 teeth of the ring gear. The 4.56 pinion is bigger than the 4.88 by a good little bit.

Running a waggy ford 44 combo now.

Has anyone broke a R&P set of 4.88's in here? Wondering about the pinion size of it and how the gear deflection is.

I have had 4.88s in my D30 for about a year.  I beat on them fairly hard from time to time.  No issues so far.  Getting ready to upgrade axles, so they are probably about to become the weak link for me.  Not too concerned about it though.

Have you broken the axle shafts with the 4.88s?

I am evidently a beta user of Tapatalk 4 even though I paid for the software...this software is buggy.

No not yet. And starting to prep for 35s.

Thanks guys, got my quote from Adam, so when my funds get right, ill schedule it up. I'm on 33's with the 32rh. I plan to go to 35's when these wear out. Will 4.10's be the way to go?

The market is flooded with gear brands and companies selling gears that didn't exist a decade ago. Granted I imagine a lot of them are sourcing them from the same manufacturing facility. In the toyota world, this is the difference between Marlin Crawler gears which are made in Japan by the same supplier for OEM versus buying Trail Gear stuff (talking about transfer case gears here but you get the idea).

So yes the ratio has an effect on the gear strength especially in a small ring gear application, but also don't overlook gear brand/quality because than makes a difference as well.
