Tent camping on the trailer
« on: February 23, 2014, 12:51:54 PM »
We're kicking around the idea of tent camping on the trailer.

Good idea or the worst thing that can be done?

Have you seen any examples where it has been done well?  If so, please describe or show photos.

I'm also considering creating a solution to hold a tarp above the tent, but I'm concerned about stuff (water) collecting in it unless it is tented.

Your wisdom and guidance are appreciated, in advance.

I have a kodak tent for my 101a3 trailer, made for a truck bed but fits perfectly. I'll get pics up later

Clark I've seen it done at bike rallies but have no knowledge or pics to pass on. I know that first step out of the tent in the morning could be a problem if your not careful.....

Cleaner, less water pooling, and flatter surface than ground camping.

Clark, I have seen it done quite a bit but it us usually when there are no real good places to put the tent and the trailer is the flatest thing around.  Those I know that do it say that it works just fine.  You have to have a tent that doesn't require stakes in the ground and you will get more of a chill from wind coming up from under the trailer, depending on what your trailer is made of.

My friend and I have discussed this a few times, just a little different and if we had deeper pockets. We'd take a slide in truck camper, like one that goes in the back of the bed, mount it on a big 5th wheel trailer and have your Jeep behind the camper shell with a regular length (16') or so for it to sit on.

Last year at Chocco Danny and Adam both set up tents on his trailer. Just looks like a tent on a trailer lol. If you have power and want to be comfortable I'd bring an air mattress or several pads to sleep on if that a big deal.

I'll look through some pics and see if there are any of various set ups.

I have a real good idea for you, just wait.

I gotta get me a bus. Tow rig, camper, & trailer all rolled into one. NICE.

I love that back porch.

I love the bus idea, but until I'm a diesel mechanic, to much to worry about.

There is a 5th wheel with the truck camper on it and enough room for a crawler, on hardline...it would cause me to have to buy a new (to me) truck.

I'm pretty sure this idea is fleeting...and coming to an end in about 5 hours.

Uh, no.  I'll be joining you guys at the roughing it spot!  It turns out that a tent that fits on my trailer will not meet the undocumented needs.
