I have just joined the group and would be up for a class on spotting etc.

The best way to learn about spotting is to come out to a ride...watch, listen, ask questions, see what works and why, see what doesn't work and why.  You'll learn a lot.

What would be the best "first" ride this year including CORE stuff? (I will probably be signing up by the end of the week)

Come to every event you can afford to attend.

From what I've heard, next month will be kind of tame (Beasley Knob), so it is a great place to cut your teeth, meet some people, and be fairly confident you'll make it home with some useful experience.

Then one of the big rides is in May (CORE event).  Depending on your setup, you can do as aggressive of activities as you want at that park.   In a worst case scenario, you can ride with someone else and learn from them.

I think this club has had as many flops at Beasley as anywhere if not more.  It has challenges.

I do think it would be nice to come up with a list of correct terminology so everyone is on the same page.
Coming from a construction back ground my hand signs are different then what I saw being used on the trail.
I also ran into a situation where I was helping back someone up and they seemed to be getting irritated because I was saying turn “uphill” instead of “passenger”.

As in spotting you always say turn passenger or driver then there is no confusion on what is being instructed. We will see what we can come up with.

Uphill doesn't work.  What you see as uphill, may not be what they see, even though you may be right, their perspective may be different.

Passenger and Driver are proper in the offrroad community and there is never any question which side is passenger and driver.  Not sure with a single seat buggy lol.

Best to match verbal with hand signals when possible as the driver can't hear sometimes... engine noise, wind, old age... //OLDSKOOL//

Ditto!.  and one spotter talking,.. the driver needs to listen to "1", ONE, Single person, So, only one person should be spotting.    we dont need multiple people trying to tell the driver what to do, that leads to
much confusion and broken stuff.

We have many great spotters in our club, having a good spotter is worth a ton on a hard trail.
