97-99 4.0l swap
« on: June 28, 2014, 11:19:54 AM »
So my 2.5l engine has begun knocking pretty loudly.  I am thinking of doing the swap to a 4.0l and know there are quite a few parts I will need.  Anyone have anything lying around?  //:hlp//

Go ahead and swap to V8. Been in that situation, went through (2) 2.5L engines. Cost & labor will be comparable and you wont regret it. 4.8, 5.3 or 6.0 should be easy to find and relatively simple to install.

Hey Matt,  How much time/money do you estimate going into a v8 swap?  This is my daily and i sourced another 2.5 with 90k on it for $400 which would be pretty quick/easy to swap in.  Thanks!

Daily driver - swap the 2.5L and be done in a day.  For a V8 swap, the cost of the engine itself is not the main cost.

$3000-$5000 total depending on condition of engine, upgrades and if you get the transmission with it. Mine was a daily driver as well. First time the engine went, I replaced with another 2.5L, took one saturday to do and lasted maybe 25k miles, if that.  Should of put that money in to the V8 swap that I did the second time. 2.5L is not a reliable engine at all in my experience.

My list is attached.

Thanks for the list.  That will be a big help in the future.  I am probably going to wait on a v8 swap since this engine is a pretty good deal and Im strapped for time.

If that's the original engine 16 years seems pretty reliable to me.

For a $400 dollar 2.5 I would go that route and be done with it in a weekend.

Yeah.  This engin had 220k miles on it... not too shabby.  I picked up the 2.5 today.  Turns out it was a mopar factory replacement engine that was pulled out of a rear ended wrangler with 95k miles on the clock so it could have way fewer miles than that.  It looks nearly brand new.

I pulled the old motor out tonight and plan on doing a leak down test on the "new" engine tomorrow after work.  It also came with all the accessories for a total of $400.  Alternator, clutch, flywheel, AC Compressor, starter, and the power steering pump.  :)

Sounds like you got a good deal. If it lasts for a few years you will be ahead money wise.
