Strange brake issue
« on: September 23, 2014, 12:40:21 PM »
Changing front brake pads on my truck last weekend (90 k1500)
I took off the two bolts holding the caliper on and and it slid right off the rotor as it should (drivers side). Took cap off of fluid resivor, compressed piston with c clamp.  Put new pads on, tried to slide in place.  I had to wack it with a hammer to get it in place.  Piston is compressed as far as I can get it to go in.  With it in place I can't turn the wheel by hand. It's like the pads are to thick .  Passenger side went in just fine.
I drove a couple miles on it, doesn't pull to right, you can smell it burning and it smokes it makes my wheel very hot.

Any suggestions?  Will it wear to normal?  Should the piston be flush? ( it's about 1/8" out, but I can't get it in any further..
Thanks

Sounds like the sold you the wrong pads. I'd call the store to double check the part #'s on the box or go back & have them show you another set for your truck.

I'm with Dave on this, but you could swap passenger and driver pads to see if the issue follows the pads.  You could also measure all of the pads for comparison.

If it is building up excessive heat, fix the problem.  Boiling brake fluid could be really bad for the vehicle and people.

Wrong pads is most reasonable answer, but it could also be a non-stock rotor.

I'll double check the ones I got .  Weird that passenger side went right on , no issues.

Mfg mistake, mix up in packaging, fitment in caliper, los of possibilities, but the one thing for sure is you need to pull them.  I would go to the parts store and compare to a new set.

Update, if anyone is interested.
Turn out it was a stuck piston, had to take the caliper off to be able to wack it with a hammer and a piece of wood.  It was really really stuck. Now to get all the air out of my brake lines.
