For feces and giggles, it would be nice to have a homemade winch line tested to ensure the connection at the thimble end held to at least the breaking strength of the line rating.

I suppose if you hook the winch up with two snatch blocks and anchor both the jeep and thimble, a 9K winch will apply close to the breaking tension on the rope.

Kent, let me know if you're interested in the safety thimble.

Kent, make one and I probably can get my old friends at Ace or Ashley to test it for free.

Kirk, the breaking strengths are higher (safety factor) than the operating strength.  In addition to U.V. and heat cycling, extreme loading weakens a rope and lowers the breaking strength over time.

Ideally the rope would break rather than either end or connection.

I just realized that the double snatch block doesn't double the rope tension, just the load on the Jeep.

Provides a lower gear ratio and more torque

Kent, first of all kudos on the Diy attitude and being self sufficient. How many locks are you going to put and how much are you backfeeding the rope for the loops?
