Relocating to Denver Colorado Area

My company is opening up a new office in Denver and I've been asked to go out and help start it up.  It is just too good of an opportunity to pass up.  I've enjoyed wheeling with many of you on here for years and I will miss you guys.  We are going to take the jeep with us of course and I am looking forward to being able to drive to Moab and many other great trails in less than a day.   The plan is to have our house on the market by the end of this week and to have it sold and be in Denver around the first of the year.  We are going to rent at first and we are looking at rentals around the Littleton, Lone Tree, Centennial, and Parker areas.  If anyone has any good tips for relocating out of state, I am all ears.  Even though my company is covering the costs of the move, it is still a daunting task.

Although we are leaving behind a lot of family and friends, my family is excited about the move and we are looking forward to a new chapter in our lives.

My advice is take the lump sum cash payment and do it all yourself... net some serious cash for RockJocks.

I have a couple good friends that live in Littleton. Plus Dennis and Chris that own Knuckles Offroad move to Littleton a year and half ago. I am jealous. Good luck and hope everything works out with little stress. I look at this one way. We have a GATR member in Colorado.  Learn the trails so you can show us around.

Both times I moved across States the companies paid a lump sum plus moving expenses up to a certain amount.  I exceeded the moving expense amount the second time but the overage was approved.  They would not add the moving expenses to the lump sum, I guess every company has their own rules.  I rented storage space when getting the house ready to sell, tried to get that included as moving expense but no go.  At least the moving company made the trip there to pick up everything.

Assuming a moving company is involved don't take their ok/not ok list too seriously.  Talk to the actual driver as soon as you can because whoever comes out to survey your home won't be able to answer those kind of questions.  They pretty much moved everything I had that was listed as no go such as propane tanks, fire extinguishers, gas cans etc...  Both times I moved they did a great job and the crews were awesome.  They get paid on weight so they will move EVERYTHING.  First time I moved Ii found a box packed with some large rocks that were sitting in my garage.

Hopefully you have enough stuff to not have your load combined with someone else's, might want to ask about that.  It was good to know that when the truck left it stayed with the driver and didn't need to be parked anywhere or opened for any reason.

TV's - When they come out for the survey make sure they correctly document the type of any flat screen TV's so that they account for proper packing.

Gun Safe? - Try to get pre approved for a "Safe Mover" especially if you have any hills on either end.  Mine almost ended up being left in my garage in my Georgia house until one of the crew talked the driver into letting them take it down the hill in my back yard to get to the basement.

We made sure to have plenty of drinks on hand (especially when moving to GA in July) and brought in lunch for them each day.  We also tipped each crew member on the last day at both ends.

We had two Jeeps transported and they were a week late getting to GA because of the truck breaking down.  It was still within the contract time frame so not much could be done there.  Luckily we have other vehicles and didn't them just didn't like them sitting on a flat bed somewhere for a week.

That's about all I can think of.  Good choice on renting.  We bought a house so the search added a lot more to the move and we ended up owning both for a short period of time.

It is a daunting task but not all that bad once you get it going.  Good luck with the move!

This will be a great opportunity for you and your family! Many people dream of being able to pick up and move to a desired location but work or finances usually get in the way. Your company is absorbing most of the burden. Enjoy my friend!
