Going synthetic but worried about heat...
« on: March 22, 2008, 09:45:22 PM »
Hey guys, I have decided to make the switch to synthetic line for the Jeep after Aetna kinked my steel 60ft in. I have read countless reviews and writeups and am going with the AMsteel blue line 5/16" x 100' rope. My question is this... I have a mile marker 8000# and am a little worried about heat from the drum on the rope. I called Mile Marker and of course the guy I spoke with was like yeah it will be fine. I need a little more reasurring. Anyway, I was doing some thinking and thought hey, I used a wrap on my plug wires on my hot rod and it would probably work on rope too. Just the section that would be on the drum itself. Here is one solution I found. I think it would work fine. Just to add a little more protection to the rope. Any thoughts?

You should be fine without it.

Looks like it would definitely serve the purpose that you want. If you want the reassurance I would say this is a good way to get it.

Chris and Jeremy, you have the same winch right? I may be wrong but they advertise it as the winch for synthetic rope don't they? I think as a measure of precaution it would not hurt to try it. It is a cheap thing to me that would work. I know if I am winching someone for a long time or myself that drum will get hot.

Chris has the SuperWinch and I have the MileMarker. I would say with your stuff might as well do the wrap just to be safe. I really have not done a lot of winching with the rope. I pulled Daniel and then I pulled a tree in downtown Atlanta for about 30 seconds straight

My bad about the winch Chris and Jeremy. I will more than likely be buying the wrap once I have the rope. Just in case.

Krawler,
You should look into this rope. When I eventually break down and buy synthetic this is what I am gonna buy.

That sounds like a good match for an overkill winch.
