Rock Rails
« on: February 08, 2015, 07:22:10 PM »
I am tired of being hung up on the lower bar of my Smitty Bilt rock rails, but I still something with a step.  Any suggestions? I looked around a little and found the ACE rails that seem to have both.

Im starting to hunt for some new ones as well. I may just not go with a step in the next set and carry a little stool if needed. But I've been looking around for ones with steps and Smittybilt makes one without the lower bar that drags. Its called the "SRC Classic Sides with Step".

Another possible one would be the "Body Armor 4x4 RockCrawler Side Guards" its got an extra tube that sticks out a bit that could act as a step. Rockford 4x4 makes one similar to this as well.

Hanson Off road makes some sliders with steps that are "frenched" in to the metal. (as the description says)

Theres quite a few more if you just search on the 4wheelparts website and look under the "rocker panel guard" tab. Around 5 pages of different sliders should show.

You can get EVO weld on sliders that are angled outwards more for a step. That's what I would go with if I were to do it again. VKS is also very similar and I sure could also be angled. I'm not sure if you want weld on or bolt on though. ACE seems to be a very popular bolt-on option.

I mentioned to you at choco that I went through the same issue. I replaced some bulky rugged ridge sliders with Rubi sliders and love them as a temp solution. Shameless plug: they will be for sale for $100 any day now. If anyone here wants them, pm me. I like evo, vks, poison spyder, crawler conceptz for aftermarket

I picked up some Rubi take offs for a hundred clams and as $$ allowed, ordered Poison Spyder Rico rockers. I welded them myself. There are a few other company's that offer kits to be added to the rubi rails.

The EVO's or VKS sliders are great, great sliders.  100% rock solid and seriously built.

But if you buy them completely stock, they hug the body for max ground clearance and don't really act like a step, too high and close to the body.

You can order them in a builders kit, the slider itself is pre-built but the three legs are not welded to the slider.  This allows you to put the legs where you want on the frame and then angle the slider to your liking.  This would allow you to put it lower and futher out to try and make it act more like a step but, you will have quite a bit of welding to do.

Personally, I prefer max clearance to a step.  Steps get in the way every step of the way on a trail...pun intended.

Ace Engineering has sliders that you use in conjunction with rubi sliders

LOD has some really nice options too! More of a slider than a step though.

And one of my favorites :
