Looks like first wrap is red and a different style rope weave. Then the rope turns to black

The red is a heat shield for the first wrap on the drum.  It also serves as a warning to when you are at the point where you shouldn't pull any more rope.

It's very nice that the heat shield was already on the rope. I added one to mine and it was a PITA to put on.  Barely fit
