TVs: 4k vs 1080
« on: January 12, 2016, 10:26:57 AM »
I have a 10 year old plasma TV that works fine.  My issue is it has no HDMI connections, and that's becoming a problem so I was looking at getting a new TV.  There's lots of info out there and differing opinions on the newer 4ks vs the 1080s  and I don't claim to be an expert.  Just wondering if anyone had experience with the 1080 vs 4k.

For someone like me that is happy with the picture of a 10 year old plasma, is there any reason why I should pay more for a new 4k TV, or should I just buy a better 1080 TV?

No go on the 4k.  Not enough programming to make it worth your $ uness you are a big BlueRay kinda guy.  I always wait... HD is awesome at 1080p and there are great deals everywhere.  Go 70" if you have the room for it.

The first debate is can your eyes even see the difference between 1080 and 4k - I can tell you that on my 55" Samsung I could not see any difference. At 70" and larger is where it makes a difference.

To Doug's point, there's not a lot of 4k content out there, but it is still being developed. For the TV itself it just boils down to what kind of deal you can find out there. You also need to take into consideration of the complete set up. Do you have a surround sound system and an existing DVD player? If you go to 4k and want to actually use it, you will need to update your surround sound system that has 4k capability and you will need to buy a new blue ray player that has 4k capability.

On my setup all of my devices (audio/video) runs to my stereo receiver first and I have one HDMI cable that goes to my TV - if your surround system is purely audio then you won't need to replace it.

If your not into the whole surround sound movie theater experience then I would stick with a standard 1080 tv. Unless you come across an awesome deal that you just can't pass up.

**EDIT** Here's an interesting article I just found!

Does your current TV have a DVI input?  You can get a hdmi to dvi adapter, keep in mind that DVI only carries video no audio ( with or without adapter.). I do a Audio/Video for a living, I don't like the "soap Opera" effect of the new TV's.  I still prefer the picture quality of plasmas.  Not enough content for 4K.  Then again, I'm an old school analog guy, CDs over iPods!

Thanks guys for the feedback.

I don't have a serious surround system.  Have some old speakers and was just going to get a sound bar too.

My current DVD player won't support 4K but I really don't watch many DVDs / Blue rays though.  Mostly streaming content and I have a new Fire TV box that supports 4K.

Kev my current plasma only has a PC In, Serial and Compnents / RCA inputs.  I guess if I get a new TV, you can have this one!

Installed an OLED the other day, it was only 1/4 thick!
You know how many TV's I have got for free over the years?  I have a 60" in my garage!  A 110" electric drop down screen with a 65" plasma behind it  and two 32" LCD on each side ( college football). I only have all of this over kill because it's what I do for a living, like a mechanic has a bunch of engine parts!  Ha ha

Sonos Playbars sound great and is endlessly expandable for music in several rooms

Sounds like a sweet set up. I'm considering adding another tv in my sunroom for multiple games.

one of the places we rented by the beach had that Sonos Playbar.  It was pretty sweet, but damn it will cost almost as much as the TV!  I was thinking a soundbar that has bluetooth so I can play music from my phone through it when I want will do.
