Identtity theft!
« on: February 04, 2016, 07:11:18 PM »
Pissed off to say the least!
My Girlfriend, Connie, was training a young girl, 30, to do Bookkeeping with Quickbooks for a small company in small town Hiawassee.  She had been training her for a couple weeks, Monday Connie finds $1000 worth of checks printed and cashed or used at Walmart.  They were forged with the owners signature, but the thief signed her name to the back.(mistake 1)  On Tuesday, Connie found that the thief had left her email open( mistake 2) and found conformation emails  for credit card apps with Connie's info that were sent to the thief's email. Over the last few days a total of 8 cards were in the process of being activated and sent to the thief, along with a Square reader ( insert in phone and swipe stolen cards without ever leaving the house!).
Thief will be arrested and charged with 9 counts of identity theft/fraud and 5 counts of forgery.
Nothing was bought on stolen/new cards, but dealing with the credit report companies has been a pain in the ass!
Hopefully the thief wasn't smart enough to sell Connie's SS#
The owner was just trying to help out a single mom of two kids a job and got taken advantage of.  We found out the the thief had previously lost custody of her kids and that  her mom has full custody.
If you own a business, small or large, do a background check.  We found out that she already had warrants out for  her arrest for credit card fraud (surprise) and failure to pay child support.

When the checks were found missing ( before the credit card stuff was found) the owner thought about not involving the police, until he called Walmart and found out that she had bought a $400 TV , adult clothes and shoes.  He thought maybe she needed food or kids stuff.

I have been considering personal identity theft insurance/protection. Does anyone use a company and could share their experience. LifeLock is one that I have looked at

I use identity guard http://www.identityguard.com

Very similar to LifeLock. I have used it for several years and it has been good. Has a good web interface and mobile app and gives you access to the 3 major credit bureau data as well as public record data so you can validate that everything is accurate.

If you have been part of any of the higher profile hacks - target, bcbs anthem, or OPM, you have s couple years worth of response protection.  They will take care of any issues.

How do you access that?

The owner dude used to publicly give out his SSN...but that must have gotten him burned, so now they cover up to $1M in trouble support.
