Another interesting moment from the Harlan trip was when we were working on Justin's rear axle.  There were a couple of locals that wandered over to chat from their camp area.  There was one redneck that felt the need to share his racist views with us in a very colorful way (amazing how there is still such ignorance in this world).  I just ignored him.  At one point, this jackass walked back to his camp to refill his cup or something and what I found very interesting is the other guy who was "with" him explicitly made a point to say that he did not share the same views and that not all people from KY are like that guy.  He seemed like a good dude and wanted to help if he could.  Always interesting...

There's one in every crowd.

It appears that on my winch a snap ring on the brake came off after which the entire brake assembly could slide off the shaft.  The brake material inside was pretty worn out as well.  Seems rebuild kits are available on eBay for around $80.  No telling how old the winch is.

Drive shaft was a case of the weld between the tube and the splined portion coming undone.  Welds didn't look like very good penetration in the first place.  So I don't need a new shaft, just rewelded.  Going to a driveline shop today.

More worrying is a puddle of oil on the skid plate under the transmission pan.

Engine oil, transfer case, or transmission?

From the last time I saw that winch at Golden, I'm guessing 1950?

The M8274 was introduced in 1974.  In fact there's a date code stamped on the upper housing that I could look at one of these days.

I thought we discussed making a lost & found forum called something like "John's back pocket"?

I think that was a joke.  I'd also expect the date code to be around 74 then :)

What is a tube bandana?  I get flashbacks of Clark sharing the Doug brushing his teeth story when I hear tube bandana.  I think I have ptsd.
