Profession level stuff here. You guys lose either way. Prove him wrong and accept being manipulated. Or reject the manipulation and prove him right. Damn.

I think the eye splice turned out pretty well, but wish I would have got one of the metal rings to help it keep its shape. I'll address that next time I make a rope and if this holds up. The only step I think i really missed is sewing the end of the rope in so it doesn't pull out, but I'll add that to the metal ring as a "next time".

I ended up with both ropes in this thread, but went with the blue rope because a) it's blue and 2) it's thinner, which is better for my application

The lack of the eyelet will dramatically reduce the strength of the rope.  I doubt it will impact your application, but understand it is for more than "keeping its shape"

I get what youre saying. The metal end on Jay's spare rope has an approximate diameter of 7/8". The end of my rope will go around a 7/8" tube, so hopefully any loss of strength is minimal.

If it breaks, I'll chalk it up to a learning experience, and then promptly blame @Scott F. for handing down cheap rope :)

Sounds about right...and it's always someone else's fault.

How does lack of eyelet reduce rope strength?

I would imagine it helps distribute the load across more rope and keep whatever it attaches to from cutting into the threads
