You can get whatever length pole you need.  I have a three or fiur foot one in my garage.
Direct tv and Uverse have wireless boxes, Comcast, charter, wind stream do not.  Not sure about dish network.
If you're running wire down the wall, when you cut your hole, you can find the stud.  If you use a ceiling mount, you can run the wire inside the pole

Dumb question, but will a stud finder even accurately work through the planks? Aren't they slightly elevated off the wall since they overlap?

Also, if i find the studs, did y'all just let the mount rest against the planks or did you make some sort of vertical wood spacer that distributes the load over several

The hardiplank should be nailed to the studs.  If not, some measurements should get you to a place to find the studs.

I didn't use any spacers. I just let the mount rest against the planks.

A good magnet can find the nails.

Maybe a quality sonar based (or whatever technology they use) stud finder could find the stud.

Can that stuff be installed directly to the studs?  Or is a layer of sheathing required?

Mine was directly on the studs, but it's an older house so code may have changed.  You could predrill through the hardiplank till you get to the wood.

Man, I just looked at tvs the other day. There was an oled flat tv that was mounted with magnets. Whole thing was 1/2" thick.

A wall mount should be plumb so I would cut a wedge.

Is there any power outlet on that wall inside or out? There's your stud and your power to grab. Hopefully there is one inside right where you want to hang the tv outside.  Fish it up.
