Back Problems
« on: March 29, 2018, 04:06:40 PM »
I have quite a history with back issues and surgeries. I’ve always been extremely active in my life and some decisions and actions I did caused a lot of my issues to include: gymnastics, mountain biking, military service and my current profession. Having said all this, my question to you is....Do you now or have had surgeries or issues that limited your day to day activities and what did you do to get healthier? Before you answer, I do know that healthy living, exercise and proper lifting techniques all help to prevent back problems. I’m looking for more specific types of issues and/or surgeries and what limitations you now have. Thank you in advance.

Ive been putting off surgery for about 6 years. I get by, with Aleve, like you said proper lifting, rest, an inversion table, and lots of core exercises like planks, low weight squats, and dead lifts. I know you were asking about surgery, but im avoiding it until i have no other choice.

I have been dealing with bad back problems for the last two years. The biggest improvement started when I was doing physical Therapy, chiropractor and massage on a regular basis.  Not the kind of massage with a happy ending but somebody that specializes in massage from a trauma. I have stopped PT, I go to chiropractor once a month just to maintain and no more massages. Mine issue now if more muscle related from a car accident from back last April.

Before the accident the spine doctor did an injection under live XRay. Was not fun and I was doing good until April came along.

I will say I tried a lot of chiropractors before I found the correct one.  Many of them wanted to be rough with the adjustments. I found a lady doctor that is very gentle and she will only adjust the areas she can feel problems with.

I’ve experienced chiropractors seem to have a different mind set with correcting back issues. I understand stretching helps but popping and cracking doesn’t seem right in my opinion. I have been fused at S1 and L5 and now problems with L3. Chiropractic methods don’t work for me.

Just the major surgeries list ....LOL

2001 ACL transplant (with donor ligament)
Went through physical therapy before hand but surgery
was the best solution. Ligament is just a hair tight with
a very very slight loss of backward range. Not a problem.

2004 Cervical Discectomy C5 and C6 (with donor bone)
Had several cortisone injections in the neck but surgery
was an absolute must. See 2016

2007 Partial Knee replacement right knee
Went through physical therapy before hand and all the
different cortisone and gel injections but surgery was
the best solution. No limitations since then.

2016 Cervical Discectomy C5, C6 and C7
Donor bone deteriorated after 12 years causing massive
pain again. Another major surgery with a different doctor
and newer technology. So far so good with no limitations.

I have a lot of grinding in my left knee which needs a knee
replacement but just putting it off. Losing a lot of weight
helped tremendously. Right now it's good enough and doesn't
limit me much. It gets aggravated some days but I just put
up with because not looking forward to yet another surgery.....

What do you think caused most of your issues?

If you have a minuet listen to this. I recommended stem cell injections to a co-worker for his knee. He could barley walk or bend his knee for almost decade. He had surgery scheduled (over $12k) and I asked him to go meet with a doc that I know of. After one injection ($700) he is now able to walk, run, jump, etc with zero pain and zero surgery. I am not 100% sure about back issues but I have heard of it helping there as well.
