Let’s talk LJ’s
« on: August 24, 2018, 10:56:44 AM »
The LJ is known as a great starter platform for a crawler.  With only 3 years of production, good ones will get harder to find.  But, they will also be more attractive to someone that wants to build a crawler as there will be more high mileage ones out there.

Besides having to run a fuel cell, what advantage does an LJ have over a comp cut TJ?

Also, if you’re looking at a platform to build, what about an early JK 2 door that is stretched and/or comp cut? A V8 is a must there but still.

For me it was two things... one form, one function.

*  Back seat and a usable cargo area.  I didn't lose either by putting the fuel cell under the rear of the tub.  This has worked very well for me when I've taken my three kids camping in the LJ.

*  Longer body allows for a rear stretch without having to comp cut the corners.  My strong personal preference was not to comp cut in order to get the look I was going for.

I agree with Jared I don't care about comp cut either for me.
So with a TJ about all you can get with a stretch is 100'' and
that's with added a aluminum gas tank.

I like the look and the wheel base.

As I have been looking for parts for the LJ, things are not as available as I thought they use to be.

I also have concerns about how much do you modify them.  Will they be more valuable un modified, or will it diminish the value.

Side note, I did pick up a LJR a month or so ago.  Trying to decide how to build it, or keep it more stock.

okok, looks like this
I still need to figure out a better image hosting site.
All three of the garage queens together, the LJ needs the chrome removed.
It was suppose to be for my dad for a few years, then mine.  But its just mine now.

Narrow TJ/LJ body is definitely an advantage on the trail over the JK,

and no fuel cell in the passenger compartment is always a good thing

But for a dedicated trail rig, the comp cut stretched TJ departure angle rocks.

For a duel use family camping cruising rig, LJ is hard to beat.

Narrow TJ/LJ body is definitely an advantage on the trail over the JK,

I feel like that’s LJ propaganda.  The body is 5” narrower but I prefer the additional shoulder room and have never seen an obstacle and think, man my body is 5” too wide. There are advantages of no b-pillar which is more 2dr vs 4dr and advantages of shorter body length, but I don’t see it being a big deal for width at the body.

The width that could matter is the axle width but everyone changes to tons that are the nearly same width anyway so that seems almost moot also.

At the end of the day I think it’s about styling, finding the sweet spot in length of the body, and feeling special that only 3yrs were made versus 8? Years of the TJ and 10 years for a JK than anything else.
