It also depends on the path of current going through your body. If it goes from your left hand and out through your right hand, you more than likely will not die from that, you might smell bad for a while and not have arms, but you can still live. But if the current goes through your heart you typically die. I've seen a guy get electrocuted before. He grabbed onto some conduit that was shorted out. It blew two holes out of his stomach area and he still lived and I've seen a guy get hit and die and there were no visual marks on his body, except for his hand.

Now at 20k volts you will just be a crispy critter!!!!!!!! MikieD, you mentioned DC, the transit system we build usually run on 750 to 800 volts DC and this sh!t will mess you up. I have seen plenty of pictures where damn dope heads and thieves try to steal the copper wire that has 750v DC going threw it. You can usually find them fried about 40 feet away.

you know as a cook i have no idea what i am talking about... just read that somewhere.. not so much the volts but the amps... i have a tv that works on 115v but only has 2.5amps pushin it.. maybe i need to take some wire and try cooking a burger with it.. if it cooks it then i guess i could die from it

Well I guess I should have said more people die from 120.

Most breakers for 120v are 20amp and for the 220v they are 30-50 amp the 120 will carry more amps than 1 leg of the 220 like your a/c for example it may pull 20amps but its 10 on each leg and a recp. may have 15 amps from a fridge and microwave. There for the amps are higher on the 120 than the 220.

This video is a little confusing. First off, phone lines contain 48v DC and when the it rings it drops to 6v DC, but at the same time it is superimposed with as much as 130v AC. But, the problem with the AC is it is only at 20 hertz. Equipment used in the US require 60 hertz. So the lamp could be powered from the DC voltage but something would have to in place to dissipate the AC voltage when it rings. For example there would probably need to be a capacitor installed to absorb the AC voltage when the phone rings.

However, this is just a guess. Maybe we can get Jimmy to try this at home.

I could try to get one of my electrical engineer buddies to try it!

Definitely. I've heard a couple guys at GA Power say that the day you stop being afraid of electricity is the day you die.
