opinions, thoughts...
« on: January 21, 2009, 03:54:08 PM »
Ok, after MM I am now in the market for a new set of tires. Here is my dilema and choices. I love my Trxus tires as they have proved themselves very capable and reliable to me. I had one fail from a inner tread seperating but I think it was from me running 10lbs of air following Chris from Crawfords to Murphy 2 times doing 100 miles an hour! The other tire I lost was cut at MM last weekend on a nice sharp rock and any tire would have gone done on that spot. I have been VERY pleased with the trxus. Only downfall for me has been mileage. I now have a set of street tires and wheels so I will only be using them for getting to the trails and home. Now I have also been happy with the size as well. I run 33x12.50s which measure out to a true 33" tire. I can go about where I want with a 33" tire now. I am thinking of going to a 35" tire. Here is my dilema…

I can get a set of 35" BFGKM2s for just a little more than I can get a set of 33" trxus tires. Here is the comparison on the tires…

Trxus - 33" 58lbs
KM2 - 34.8" 63lbs

So I will gain 1.8" in overall clearance (when aired up) and the KM2 is 5lbs heavier than my trxus. Is it really worth it? I mean after you air down you loose the clearance. I know bigger tires make obsticles easier to get over and I would still be a little higher underneath, but I am worried about moving into the breakage zone once I go that size. I run the dana 30 with an aussie and a dana 35 with the super 35 kit and a detroit locker. Right now I am in the safety zone and feel comfortable giving the skinny some juice when needed with my 33s. I should have my 4.88s in soon so with the 33" my crawl ratio is better than with a 35". So I am interested in what you guys think. I am a firm beliver in the old saying bigger is not always better! But just curios to know what you guys think.
I've grown tired of this.

If it helps your decision your only looking at .9" more clearance. (half of the 1.8")

what is your gear before the 4.88?

With your drivin style I think 35's will be safe. I know people who drive like me on a stock dana 30 and 35's/36's without breaking them.

That .9 under the belly, axles tubes and center sections.

If we buy (10) km2s maybe we can get a good discount together. You wanna try?

If you didn't have a D35 or 4.88s, I would say go with the 35"s but you seem to do really well with 33"s.

I agree with Ben H. I mean you seem to great on 33's so far and what little you do get hung up on, will that little extra height make it over or just leave you hung up again and worrying to press the gas a little harder? If you do go with 35's I would definitly make sure you are carrying spare shafts and other common breaks on the 35 that you could trail fix.

With the KM2s you can sell your street tires and wheels to help with the price... if you wanted...

Keep em comin! This helps me make my descisions. Matt, we can deal. Start lookin around! .9" is not enough for me to say heck yeah, I want 35s! Like I said, I am very confident in my Jeep as it sits now and I really don't worry about breaking too much with my setup. But then again, I would like to have 35's but for more than looks in this case. ;) I will be selling my trxus tires I have left over and have thought about selling my DD tires and wheels but I sure like having 2 sets. No mileage on the wheelin tires means they last A LONG TIME!

Matt keep me in the loop on the price of the tires... except I need some for a 17" wheel... if the price is cheap enough I might can swing it and sell my stockers for a little cash  ;D

Ben, for those of us who don't know. What have you done to the 35? I assume you have upgraded the shafts but anything else. I mean I guess a S35 and 8.8 dont quite compare but your style of wheeling is so light on gas I would think you would be fine. But... your call right? Price is probably a big factor too. No point in spending more if you are afraid to push it or gain nothing from it.

You know you want 35's. The km2's hookup great.  I have a friend who has them also.  He likes them alot better than his old cut 36 tsl's.  He said they are better in just about everything.  I love mine so far but i have only wheeled on them once.  I should be able to try them out every week now that i have a park 10min away. ;D
