Custom bumpers anyone?
« on: June 25, 2009, 05:41:26 PM »
So I finally recieved my new bumper from Nate's 4x4 a couple weeks ago.  I work in the steel industry and was able to enlist a friend of mine to help mount an extra set of light tabs and used his shop to spray the whole thing with Bedliner.  (pics up soon!)

This particular friend runs an ornamental steel fab shop and business is slow.  He has top notch welders looking for work.

I work for his steel supplier and can buy material even cheaper than he can.

His offer to me was if I can find people who want to buy custom bumpers he will build them.

This is where it works out for you...  Any bumper you see in catalogs or online, if you can get us a picture of it and the specs for your mounting points we can build it.  And I'm pretty sure we can do it cheaper.  Not to mention the shop is in the middle of Atlanta.

I'm just wondering if there's any interest from you guys here at GATR.  I haven't gotten into specifics on pricing or researching any of the schematics.

This may just start out as bumpers but if it goes well he has already mentioned custom roll-cages sliders and about a dozen other ideas off the top of his head.

One other thing we would offer is plasma cut lettering for your bumper.  Put something like "H2 RECOVERY VEHICLE" as a cut out on your rear bumper.  If you can think it, we can build it.

Anybody think they'd be up for a custom bumper shop in Atlanta?

If this get's off the ground you know GATR gets the best discount!

I buy my steel at 10% above cost.  That's cost from the mill, I work for a major distributor.  Our biggest customers don't even hit that mark.

Yes.  I'm pretty confident we could build that.  It'll require some mapping out but it's far from being impossible.
It may not be exact but we could come pretty damn close.  If I can get a close up look at one.  It can almost surely be done.

If you can build a simple rear bumper and tire carrier that doesn't cost a lot for the JK then you would have some buyers here... heck I might even have to spend some money on the Jeep for that.

My Smittybuilt was about 640.00.  Hope it gets here soon, but it's so much less than the others, and looks good.

Let us know how the install goes. Read quite a few reviews of the bolt holes being way off and people having to cut and drill things. Hopefully they corrected the fitment issue now.

I'm working up a basic rear bumper for my LJ now.  I'm stuck on the hinge and latch set up.  I have a few ideas but I want to be sure that it's secure and quiet.  Once I have that sorted it will only be a couple days before it's built.

One of the things I'd like to offer is fully customized bumpers. Basicly meet with me, work up the design then I get it made for you.

This weekend I'll be talking to my guy about his capabilities and what labor costs are like.

Our first front bumper will be built for a TJ and will be ready in a couple weeks.  Once I do that I'll have a better idea of costs period.

One other thought.  Would you guys be interested in a bumper that was sealed and mounted an air hose fitting so it could be used as an air tank on the trail?  Just pressurize it before you leave and use it as needed on the trail.
