Is anyone here an HVAC tech?
« on: April 22, 2010, 06:59:03 PM »
I have a 2 story house and the upstairs AC unit has quit working and it is already getting very hot during the night. My daughter and her husband are living in my house and have a 3 month old baby. So I need to get this thing fixed or replaced. A guy came and looked at it today and basically the unit needs to be replaced and I don't have $2800 to do it. Can anyone help?

I know the feeling.   >:(

Only thing I can suggest is move everything downstairs and live on the lower floor.
Open windows upstairs to ventilate, as the hot air will rise up there, and the cooler air will stay down.

Is this a guy you know and trust?
Did he tell you any specifics?
Usually they can get them running with a part, but if your compressor is blown...  no other choice.

me, too, i feel the pain, i just throw $500 for a new fan motor and to have some wiring redone ....  :bs) , but hopfully its something replaceable, have you checked craigslist? ,,  a window unit could help until you find a fix, uguly but slightly effective. Hope you get it fixed soon.

My brother on here is a hvac repairman, Shoot him a pm and he will point you in the right direction. If it was working properly then just quit, it's only one part thats gone bad and if you find the right hookup the parts are decently priced. The hvac company mark up 100% on parts nad charge a arm and leg for them to come out and install it. Ask my brother, here is his link to his profile. http://www.gatrailriders.com/GTRForums/index.php?action=profile;u=1003

Don't have a clue as to who the guy is. The previous owner used him so we just gave him a call. We have another guy coming to take a look at it.

The guy that came today said that it's completely out of freon and instead of pressure their was a vacuum, indicating a major leak somewhere in the system. So he wanted to fill the system with nitrogen to find the leak. then once the leak is found and fixed the lines would have to be cleaned out to get rid of the nitrogen. Of course if the coil is the problem then that would need to be replaced also. He wanted $1200 just to test fix and then refill the system with freon. I thought this was a high, but maybe not.

Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but I just dropped a few coins in the jeep and my cash stash is empty at the moment.

Chuck it will run in a vacuum if its low. I use to do havc everyday and still do it on the side. You are alittle further than I would want to drive. But if it comes down to you having to spend big $$$ hit me up. I have 2 jobs lined up for next week for the same thing. He told you the right way to do it but thats high to me.
