North Georgia Forest Service Roads
« on: May 10, 2010, 12:41:33 PM »
Hey guys,

My wife and I are going to be in the Unicoi/Clayton area this weekend for some camping/offroading.  I'm wondering if any of you recommend some cool F/S Roads or trails.  I know of one close to the Sandy Bottom campground area in Persimmon that's off of 76.  Are there any others???  I have a stock Rubi with 30's.  So, nothing too hard core, but not pansy either.

Thanks,

Tuck

The one you are referring to is called hightower / charlies creek rd. There is another called Tray mtn rd. The best entrance is from hwy 356 near Helen. The access rd is called Chimney mtn. There is not much left up here that has any kind of challenge to it.

I think when they changed out the rd signs for the 911 remapping, they changed Dicks Creek to Kennesaw Ln.

The road used to go all the way across to Tray Mtn at Addis Gap, but the f/s put a gate up at the end. It probably takes 1.5 hr to ride to the end and turn around and come back. There is about 10 creek crossings on the rd. It's mostly all just gravel rd.

Hey Rabun and everyone,

Thanks for the info on Tray Mtn!!!  Awesome Trail!!!  The funny thing about it is that it actually showed up on my Garmin.  Also, I didn't lose a signal while I was on it....I couldn't believe it.

Does anyone know where 960 (Going straight instead of turning right to stay on Tray) goes?  I was wanting to check it out, but it was starting to rain and I didn't want to get in a sticky situation.

Thanks again!

Tuck
