Jack Stands

I'm not comfortable with the jack stands that I'm using. They are rated at 3 ton and go 21" tall and I have them all the way up and they seem to be flimsy. I'm looking for something a little more sturdy than this and that can go up to at least 25". Any suggestions?

I use 2 floor jacks and jack stands. But I know somebody on here has some suggestions on which are the best.

You can also use two high lifts on the front and back bumper for some added insurance. I never liked mine to set like that always afraid some one would lean on the front end and next thing you know is it's laying nose first on the floor.

I want to say i've read somewhere that using a wooden base under the jackstands is osha approved, but what I've done in the past is used stacked wooden blocks, a fair amount wider than the base of my jackstand, to get the extra height needed.

Mark's set up is some 4x4s stacked up like Lincoln Logs and screwed together. I believe he then covered the top in plywood and screwed some 1x2s around the edges so that the jackstands couldn't slide around on the top. I'm sure he'll chime in later.

Richard and I have had good luck with the HF/Northern 6 tons.

We used the 6 tons like Jimmy said and havent had any problems except that one time Jimmy rolled the xj off and the jackstand went into the side of the fuel tank.

Hmmm, I have access to some railroad ties that are already cut to 1' sections. That would probably just about do it.

Yes wood is safe, and Jimmy is right on how I did mine. My thoughts were we use wood to shore airplanes all the time (and yep that's OSHA approved) so why couldn't I build a lift kit for my jack stands. I also have 2 pair of 6 ton stands, one from Harbor Frieght and one from Summit.

I just took a drive out to our lay down yard and was able to come up with four chunks of cut up RR ties. They are about 18" long and about 11" tall so that make for a good base.
