I went online to check on getting a cabin for Windrock but they are all booked up.
The only thing available was camping, yerts & $300 a night bunkhouses.
I called the Hilton over in Oak Ridge (10 minutes away) & got the Windrock discount of $91 a night for 2 queen beds.

Awesome park. You gona done and ready Pat.

I wish. I'm hoping to be done by then, but not sure ill be ready for windrock.

The size of windrock (and Harlan/rausch) is part of the reason I'm switching to gas and hopefully a more efficient engine.

Was it Windrock where we would stay at bed n breakfast right next to the entrance? It was convenient and you didn’t have to air up daily.

That was one of my primary complaints, but "Ruby" kept using my supplies to make her 'breakfast' for the tenants.  There was something else, but I can't recall.

Anyone that’s planning on this ride have a good knowledge of the trails?  I’m going to have the wife and kids with me and they don’t like getting too crazy. I want to be able to hit some moderate trails and assuming it’s dry some good rocks but not anything like Waldens Ridge or whatever that gets sketchy/off-camber. Looks like so far we have a few 35-37” rigs and a few 40”+ so that should work out well.

I haven't been to this park either but, I would think they have trails for all rigs as most parks do.

This park is bigger than the entire area inside 285. Tons of stuff for all build levels and bypasses for most everything.

You could spend a week here and still not hit all the trails

I’ll shoot you a message tomorrow, depending on the number of days you’ll be there, you’ll probably only hit 5-10 trails. I spent two days there last time I went and only hit 4 trails. There are a few that I think you’ll like if your family wheeling. Challenging enough to make it fun for you, but won’t scare the wife.

CAUTION:  use a current map!

We wasted hours trying to go to a trail that was marked as a "Jeep" trail on a previous map, but for that year had been changed to an ATV only trail.  Very frustrating.

The first day in the hard core group we hit 3 trails
the whole day......that was a helluva day wheeling
on nasty trails.

From a recent bleepinjeep video I saw the other day, trail 15's v ditch has gotten really bad, so be sure to check it out before taking a full bodied rig on that trail.  It's a great trail though.

They have a app that works pretty good and with the paper map you can get around fairly well. Like Travis said most of the trails have bypasses.

We will be easy to find, some of us have a GATR stickers on our rigs.

As for radio, most of us have switched over to the GMRS type radio (Rugged or BAOFENG) and some of us also still run a CB.

I’ll be there Thursday night (Doubletree hotel) and hit the trails first thing Friday. Planning to be at the general store or campground office (not sure what’s what) when they open at 8am to see if I can unload all our non-wheeling stuff at the cabin before heading to the trails.

I no longer have CB just GMRS. Want to ride intermediate trails primarily. I’ll plan to be at the general store ready to roll at 9.

Not to jinx us but weather looks good currently through Friday, just hot as hell.

Yeah, no CB either - GMRS for me.
I'm good with medium trails. I'll volunteer to be in the very back.
I'm not good at keeping the guy behind me in my rear view.

I think I have a Firestick 3’ somewhere in my garage. I can check this weekend, in KC until Friday. I know I kept my radio, SWR meter, etc, just can’t picture where the antenna is at the moment.

Go to the campground for cabin check-in.  The campground entrance is on the right of the main Windrock road as you head in.  I think you can get permits at the campground check-in.

The general store is for gas, permits, and sundries.

Turn right and go up a pretty steep hill then
there is a place on the left to check in....

That's what I remember from the 1 time that I went.

Windrock is serious about their rules, so don't violate them, including speeding.  Alcohol is a no go on the trail...don't even try.

It’s slick and not much fun when wet and doesn’t dry very quickly due to most trails being pretty wooded and shady.

I’m seeing anywhere from 40-60% and it keeps changing. As long as it’s not 80-100% I feel good about it. I have a non refundable cabin reservation so I gotta go either way. If it’s sloppy I’ll ride easy trails just to get out in the woods.

The intermediate trails aren’t as rough in the rain. Connor and I wheeled the shit outta this place in torrential downpour about 2 years ago. It can be done!!!! Trail 26 is great for rain. Nearly completely rock! It follows an old river bed. I’d avoid 16 if it rains. It took us 2 hours to get past the last two obstacles to get out( almost 5 hours total for that one )

That will depend on the group you are in.

Some like to wheel later into the evening.  Some like to come back to camp for dinner and then do a night ride.  Some won’t wheel at night at all.

That will all just depend on the folks out there on this ride.

CAUTION:  use a current map!

We wasted hours trying to go to a trail that was marked as a "Jeep" trail on a previous map, but for that year had been changed to an ATV only trail.  Very frustrating.

I agree it’s at least a bit surprising the cost for a weekend there. Granted I don’t normally have the wife and kids along, but I’ll have about $140 invested for permits and the map, plus the cabin (which was my choice as my bday present from my wife). But with the size of the place I can see how it might be worth it and most places you’re in for $20-30 so one time a year or whatever isn’t too bad.

Just a PSA...I believe any firewood has to be bought up there, I saw something about that on the website (purchased within 30 miles) and I know I’ve been camping up in Tennessee and the state park had a similar regulation. Something to do with keeping invasive pests out I think. I was planning to offer up our fire ring at the cabin (Oak View, off the main entrance road) to the group as well. Either way.

Cost is per passenger, and last time I was up there my friend had to pay full price for his passenger wife, no discounted rate. Go wheeling monthly with a family of 4, and I'm sure it adds up to a lot for most wheelers

Very tight between the fenders with those wide ass wheels.

once you go trailer queen , you'll not want to drive her to our rides again. Plus, you can go ballsout take a little more risks *w/o worry about maybe not getting home  [slammin]

I'm jealous of the real trailer. I'vecrented enough uhaul auto transports to have bought my own aluminum auto transport by now  [no2]

y'all have fun and safe time

(*edited because don't think 'ballsout' is applicable to a jkunlimited w/ a D30)

I should be getting up there early enough tomorrow to get some ride time in for the afternoon/evening.  If someone would PM me a contact number so I can link up, I would appreciate it. I am camping at primitive site 19 and will have a red XJ.
Another XJ, awesome.
2 XJ’s.  With all those parts....at least one of you will be able to wheel
