Title: Firearm Virgin
Post by: BeerIAm on December 03, 2015, 11:26:54 PM
So I've never owned a gun before.  Shot a few at the range but never actually owned one.  I'm going to start the process to get my firearms license but I thought I'd solicit the group for feedback on things I should do or be thinking about.  For example what's a good "beginner" pistol?

personally I think a good beginner pistol is one that fits your hand and is comfortable. I see a lot of people get a small caliber (which is fine) but get a very small framed gun. A full size frame .22 caliber is a good place to start. Like the S&W m&p22.  Or maybe a full size 9mm. my wife shot a small frame .22 at first but quickly stepped up to a ruger SR9 and found it to be more fun to shoot and she shot a lot better. Cant go wrong with a Glock either. If you would like to shoot some different guns we are going to be at Big Woods goods on sat. I have a few different models and calibers to shoot.

Go to a gun store and hold a lot of guns. Stay with a basic caliber that is easy to find ammo and check the price of ammo.
Is this for protection? Play ? Both
Are you going to carry it or leave it at home. These are all factors you need to look into. I personally buy Glocks mainly and stick to 9mm mainly for all my carry guns

Don't get this.

The first thing you need to do is to sign up for a basic safety course at a gun range.  It will cost about $150 and worth every penny.  Learn before you shoot.  The instructor will help you decide on a good weapon.

Oops looks like I put this in the classifieds.  #dumbass.  So I guess that means I need to pay you for your advice?

The Adventure Outdoor center in Smyrna is right up the street.  Sounds like I need to just get up there and sign up for a few classes.

Initially would just be for protection and if leave it at home until I'm more comfortable with it.

Thanks!

A leave at home gun you can go bigger frame or full size which holds more ammo. The negative is a full size is heavier to carry on your body and harder to conceal. Shop around. You will find a lot better prices at other gun shops than you will at Adventure. Adventure has some bad history that most people don't know about but they will never get any money from me

to get an idea of what to ask and what to shoot at a range, watch a few Youtube channels on carry and home defense guns, Hickock45 is a good one, he loves Glocks but is unbiased for the most part.. Shoots alot of different stuff, and knows his stuff. His favorite is probly a Glock19 tho, and thats what I just changed over to carrying daily.

I have daily carried a 1911 for 22 years. I also prescribe to the bug out bag and long gun in the automobile idea too.

In my view a pump shotgun is a better home defense weapon than a handgun.  YMMV

Yep...safer for the ones you love, and sufficient to stop the ones you don't.

They are slightly more difficult to CC.

go to the range and shoot some, they have rentals and ammo and will let you shoot so that you can get a feel for different pistols. I hate Glocks after those experiences. I settled on a S & W M&P 9mm for my daily carry. I had a Mossburg Pump for home defense but decided it was a bit to much for my small house. My current daily is a Ruger .380 which is much smaller and less ammo but can and will suffice should the need arise. The M & P is my Home Defense go to. I would suggest heading over to http://www.georgiacarry.org/ (http://www.georgiacarry.org/) and review and verse yourself with the laws and responsibility of carrying a weapon. Think about it and make sure you are comfortable with both the mental attitude and hitting your target. There have been times when I worked in construction (Superintendent/Project Mgr.) where keeping a cool head was more important than carrying. Don't get me wrong I felt good knowing it was there. But there are many circumstances where avoidance is a better protector.  Lastly, understand what brandishing is because it can get you in trouble. I was always taught not to show it unless I was going to use it. Others will probably argue for Open Carry but it is not a good idea in my book, I'd rather have an element of surprise on my side.

Full size pistols and heavier pistols usually feel more comfortable when you are shooting at a range for awhile.  Lots to read about on caliber as well.  Often .40 cal guns were originally designed for 9mm and don't work that well on .40 etc...  For home defense you may want to shoot an AR15 as well - very easy to control and aim with a huge selection of customizations and purpose designed bullets.  Much easier to hit a target with a short barrel rifle than a pistol, plus a large magazine.

If that is really your collection that is utterly amazing. I agree, Hickcock45 is a good channel as well as SPF Russia. Some funny $#!t on there.

No I wish. There is over a million dollars in that picture. A lot of full auto stuff. If you zoom in you can see some high dollar rifles.

Take a look at the Springfield XD-S 9mm.  They're throwing in some extra goodies right now.  You can't go wrong with an M&P Shield either. Very similar guns.

9mm ammo is cheaper than 40 cal and would be better to learn with (since it's cheaper).

Since this thread came up got me to thinking
and reading. I looked at a couple handguns today.
Liked the feel of the Ruger LC9 in my hand. The
Karh PM9 didn't fit at all in my hand. Got
back from lunch and started reading reviews
(hickok45). As practically a newbie myself I
like the up when loaded bar with red sides and
also the lock pin to disable the gun for storing
around kids. Think I might buy it tomorrow....
Any body have one or had experience with it?

Bought my G43 from their other store - Dahlonega Gun & Pawn.  $349 It was originally $329 but they were out of stock when I went to buy it.  When they got stock in, the price went up.  Still way cheaper than everyone else.

Good point for someone new to firearms. One must always be concerned with where that projectile might go in the advent of a miss or deflection. Bullets go right through sheetrock walls with little resistance. OH yeah and the sound of pump racking is a universal sound, everyone knows it.
