Title: Sept 11 2009 Tellico Vets Ride

Theres a guy building a jk for the purpose of getting wounded soldiers out of their recovery environments and out camping for the weekend...he's planning on touring the US trail riding all over the place and plans on being in Tellico for the Sept 11th weekend. So...
I've got a chance to help organise a trail ride weekend for wounded/recovering vets and it happens to be Sept 11th weekend...triple cool by me cause I'm a vet, I feel like Sept 11th should always be remembered/memorialized and I'd love to take some of the recovering soldiers out to enjoy the trails...I dont know how many GI's we'll get to come trail riding....but camping for the weekend celebrating their efforts...probably camping at Crawfords...I dont know though...depends on the number of GI's I guess. Anyone want to take some guys out for a ride that weekend?

+1 to karma

I'll follow the schedule they have listed. Maybe I can find a few squids to pal around with and make fun of the jarheads. Who knows, I might even find a fellow desert storm vet.

I would like to help but not sure if my Jeep would be worthy of this kind of stuff. I got a feeling their will be alot of dedicated trail rigs that can do extreme things and make it fun for the troops where mine is more of a moderate rig that I have to drive home at the end of the weekend. I know some of the hard stuff will probably still be closed in September so I guess ill play it by ear. I would want to be locked in the front atleast.

Not to mention... I could only really carry one passenger so not sure if that would be real helpful?

I dont know. I'm rolling out with 31's on my xj and 35's on the wifes....even if I dont try guardrail or something like that I"m pretty sure I can winch through the bypass...if we even go there...I'd like to take a load of them to beasley first so they can get their intro to trail riding.

I've got open seats if my rig is appropriate for the trails that are choosen.  I'm also going to see what we can do to help prep the JK.

so the tellico trip wont happen until Sept. 11 2009 right? I was reading the link and it says it will begin April 4-5 2009.... If thats the case... by that time my JK should be decently built and be able to provide a good time for atleast 1 passenger. O and I have no problems going doorless!

;D I keep forgetting that its so far away. I wish it was this year....maybe I jumped the gun a bit asking for people to go riding so early :)
But I've got a lot of organizational work to do before hand....its good to know how many people are interested in helping though

I made this thread a sticky so it wont slip off the radar in the next year. This gives people more than plenty of notice and it will provide yellowxj a place to keep us updated

I posted a few pics of Tellico,of course my Jeep and I, and a couple other Jeeps. I also received a reply from Jason who was really excited to see someone with a [dis]ABILITY, even though I'm not a Vet, that wheels. He thinks it will be a big help to some of the others who will be attending. Look forward to being there.

I am all in for this ride as well. I guess I will either be here in Iraq till those damn Dems take over(LOL)!! or in Afghanistan..again. Anyways, I just seen this JK on the other board and was curious about this guy. He has a ton in after market upgrades. Who is this guy? I have been up by Fallujah, where this guy says he is at. He must have spent all his hazard pay on this thing. Hell, I would like to meet him and see this JK up close. Good for him. I like to see that working around the Hadji's and putting up with this heat paid off for the guy. Bad ass JK. g

I was just talking with Jason about this ride. He is the one that is putting all of this stuff together. He's also the one with the badass JK that you keep hearing about. Here's the pm he sent me.

Hi Mike...regarding Tellico, the guy who was going to host that event contacted me and said he wouldn't be able to host it any longer. Further, he told me that with the trail closures there, it would be difficult to know what would be available there next year.

I'm actually going up to Tellico on the 14th for a few days...want to get up there at least one more time and have some fun before they close more trails.

Because of those things, we had to cancel that event. There is a club in Florida (Matanzas Jeep Club) that has expressed interest in hosting an event in Georgia at River Rock. When I get back there, I'm going to meet with the guy and go over that. Due to the large number of military bases in GA, I think that might be the better option.

There's a club in FL called Clay County 4x4's. I've met a bunch of the guys at the FL charity event a few months ago and they have invited me to go to River Rock at the end of this month (Labor Day weekend). So, I'm doing my best to try to work it out where I can get up there.

The schedule on the main website is the correct one. I don't foresee that changing between now and the start of the program.

Thanks for showing your support for this program. I hope you and your fellow club members will be able to make it to one of the events. Your group is VERY well known throughout Georgia and even FL.
Thanks,
Jason

Here's my reply:

Hey Jason,

Sorry to hear about Tellico, but you're right, there's no telling what will still be open. River Rocks a great place. We go there often and I know the owner pretty well. Here's a link from one of our past rides there.

http://www.jkowners.com/forum/showth...ght=river+rock

When you say you're going to Tellico on the 14th, do you mean August 14th? I hope so, because we will be there that weekend also for our monthly ride. We have the large cabin rented at Tellico cabins and you would be welcome to stay if you want. Here's a link to the thread. It's been locked, but if you want to go, you're in. I'm one of the trail ride organizers for The Georgia Trailriders. We also have a new guy riding with us that weekend that's just coming back from Iraq. He's a civilian sniper.

As far as hosting an event goes, Our club would be interested in this. I don't know if we would be large enough to sponsor the whole event, but we would love to help.

Thanks,

Mike

I'll let you know what I find out.

Here's his reply. It looks like they will be there at Tellico Cabins the same time we are.

Yep, August 14th I'm going up there...will probably stay until the 17th. I'm going up there with Brad Wilkins, the guy from Overbuilt Customs who's helping me modify my Jeep (www.overbuiltcustoms.com).

Brad will have his 2 son's there and one of his son's friends. I think his wife is going to be there, but she might end up takin' off and going to Atlanta one of the days. We've got two cabins reserved (I believe at Tellico Cabins because I know it's not at Crawford's).

Shouldn't be hard to miss my Jeep (big black 4 door with a fastback hard top), so if you see me, definitely flag me down.

If you all are interested in helping out with the GA event, I can let the other club know about that when I meet with them. A dual hosted event with your club and theirs should go down really well.

See you in 2 weekends!
Jason

Sorry to jump it the mix.  But I will donate the pulled pork BBQ if the events ends up at Tellico.  I just will need a head count for this event as it gets closer.  It is a great cause and hopefully we will start seeing many of the vets returning home this year!

I would not go to Tellico without lockers. It would make things less difficult for you. The way things are going, I can't even project when I am going to be in again.

mark i might do that but would like to make sure that all the guys that show up can ride, most of the guys that will be there dont have a jeep and some of the guys wouldnt be able to take the level 3-4 trails, remember the ride is for the guys that have been hurt over there... so we have to take some of the tails easy...

Gotcha, and I understand. I'm really going to try and make this one happen, You guys don't know how much I appreciate what yall do. I know that you and "G" know how I feel, but everyone that keeps my family safe has a seat in my HEEP. Get you some lockers and open up your seats. In case you haven't figured it out, you need to be locked up for Tellico. ;D

Well I checked his site, looks like tellico got bumped. He rides in MD on the 12th and 13th of September, a park in VA the next weekend and then finishes at River Rock on the 26th and 27th of December. Maybe I can contact the host club to see if they need help.

You don't want to Tellico with 2 wheel drive.  Looks as though everything there is up in the air anyway.

Thee are not many places you can go with 2wd that we go without having a miserable day hung up all the time.  grab a ride with 1 of us.
