Had a blast today!  Thanks guys for another great day of wheeling for Madison and me.

:D :D

i was driving all day, so I don't have any except for Mike, and these were taken late in the day.

Will almost rolled Mike's JK at this 1st ditch when it missed park and went rolling backwards in a pit that they just winched out of.  Then Mike tried an ugly curving ditch with a 4' vertical drop, and to get him out I had to pull up over top of the rear bumper and winch him up to get it to come up first, then back away.  Kudos to Mike for even trying this wicked stuff!

I had a really fun day breaking in the 44.  I got hung up good on the same "boulder" hill I always like to try.  The other guys have those pics.

I will get mine up tonight... great days of wheeling. I could tell a huge change just from the small lift I had. I tried a lot more climbs, most of them went well. Today I almost rolled it twice, once when the tires slid off the side of a V-ditch and another when I picked a crappy line going down a large drop and had to get strapped back up. Not sure where the next step will be... more lift or just get 35's. The 32's did damn good today, just dragged the belly some.

Big thanks to Will and Kyle for the spot work they gave today and yesterday. Thanks to Mike for cooking dinner last night. And as always thanks to Steve for his hospitality and keeping up a great park.

Here are mine from Friday. I would like a carnage report, I will start by posting mine, none on the Jeep this time, but I did loose a wheel bearing on the trailer and the outer race seized on the shaft. I'll start working on that soon. I had a great time as always, thanks to everyone for making my Dad feel like one of the guys, he had a great time. Thanks to everybody that spotted and lended helping hands all day. And as Jerm said thanks Steve.

I will let everyone tell their carnage story but Kyle did pull his front cover and found plenty of metal...

Only think I did was bend the bracket that holds the rear bumper on and I guess knocked a few of the screws loose/out on my passenger flares when I almost rolled it.

Here are my pictures. Mostly Doug and Mike:

Pictures look good Jerm, I was hoping you got some on Trail 7 of me and Dad, but I guess not. I sure thought you took more pictures than that. I was afraid that was what Kyle was going to find.

Between Ted and I, we've got over 200 pictures that are currently being uploaded on Photobucket.

I was quite impressed with the bone stock TJ Sport - 45k 30" GS-A's and all.... my xfer case skid plate dosen't like me any longer but it was quite fun, sure surprised me in quite a bit of situations.

Stock TJ's jump well too.

Here they are, I didn't go thru any of them - just uploaded all I had between the two of us.

If anyone would like a full size pic(s) (some are 7 others are 8MP - depending on which camera was used), send me a PM with the picture number and your e-mail.

Glad you had a great time with us! Hope we didnt scare you off. I think now you see what needs to be done to the Jeep. I think your biggest hold up yesterday is you got off camber and the least resistance tires on the front and rear axle would spin and you lost traction. I think an Aussie locker in the front would really help you out!

Haha... I guess I see why my flares are loose

Had a blast this weekend. The weather was perfect Friday and Saturday. I had to leave early Saturday for my daughter's birthday party and ended up not going back because the rain finally made it down there. Steve has been busy with the back hoe and I didn't realize it. Some of those places were crazy. Like the one I sent Will into.

It wasn't his fault. I made him go through there. I think he needed a diaper change afterwards though.

Here are a link to my pictures. They're still uploading though.

It kept getting hung up on the belly, that stock transfer case skid plate hangs so low, just about every obstical it was dragging. I've been looking at various belly-up plates, but they require other parts too (SYE/CV drive shaft) so I gotta see, that would net another ~2.5" of clearance under the center of the Jeep which I think would have prevented most if not all of the hangups. Lockers would be good too.

LOL! That is great! Is the original picture bigger? If so can you send it to me?

That was the very first obstacle of my very first day wheeling. Almost made it to the top but kept laying down on the belly pan right before I got over.... 1st gear (quite low on the 6spd) in 4lo wouldn't get enough speed and as soon as the tires spun the RPM would near redline, so I backed up, put it in 2nd, someone said "give it more gas" so I did :)

Great pictures everyone.  It was a really great ride.  Sorry to say I took no photos.  Maybe next time.  Calvin should have some good one's also.

Also,  I would have to say the Will suprised me.  He did a great job leading everyone around as the ride master, eventhough, we didn't get started until around 11 am Sat. hahah..   He even kept us out of the mud this time except for himself and his friends using the jeep as a boat..  He can explain.

Enjoyed meeting everyone and hope to ride again soon.  I left around 6am Sun am.  My camper spun all the way to the top of the first hill when I left because of all the rain.  I thought for a minute I would have to get Will to come winch me up the hill. Oh well, I made it to the top and finally to the hard top.

take it easy everyone and I am sure I will talk to you on the forum later..

Mike

Thanks everybody for coming out and making another great GATR ride!

I beat up my little Jeep this weekend  ::)  replaced the fan clutch pretty fast after Drew drove me to O'Reily's for a new one. Passenger rear corner has now got a nice dent and scratch in it, but what tops it all off is the interior. I invited some girls from school down there, and they wanted to go to the swamp. Thy were not very impressed with the rocks for some reason  {ehm}  So anyways, girl was driving, she got it super stuck in the swamp, I had to sling mud everywhere to get it out and I had the doors and windows off. I went ahead and hosed down the entire interior and pulled the front carpet. Well now I've got a soaking wet Jeep that's sitting with the top on in the rain, so it's not gonna dry for 3 days {nln} Sometime towards the end of the week I'm gonna work on cleaning/drying it out.

So, gotta say it again like I always do.... the Jeep is never seeing mud again!  :D

Thanks again everybody, had a blast.

Great time wheel'n with you guys!  That picture of Night (aka Jump) had me rolling again.  Special thanks to Kyle for providing a nice spot, Will for the trail leading and Livingston for making it a a really great day.   Enjoyed chatting with each of you and hope to ride with the GA trail riders again in the future.

Cheers!

not sure about Kyle but I did see the Ford.  It was on a trailer sitting in the small field on the left as you go in.  Looked like it had been burnt or spray painted black or something.  I guess that was it.  It looked like the Ford in your posts..

I sure wish I would have come back Saturday, looks like a great time.  It was so foggy/dreary at the lake Saturday morning, and the radar showed rain moving in, so I stayed put with the birthday girl.  Looks like you guys got in some great wheelin before the precip arrived.

Mark, thanks for coming by, tell Donna thanks, that cake was awesome!!!!  The strawberry shortcake we made with it (rather than the Sara Lee she bought) was over the top, and everybody's talking about that cake! Got to have a recipe. (I know, it's a secret!)   {toast}

As soon as I hit the lake Doug it rained on me all the way home. It rained so much that it only cost me $2.75 at the .25 wash today to get the Jeep completely clean so I could inspect it...

Yeah, we thought it was ring and pinion, but it looks like they escaped. The spiders were pretty much unrecognizable.  :o

Steve was telling me about the truck this morning; they flipped it over to cut the engine out and it caught on fire. They just let it burn  ;D

HAHA, thats awesome. That truck will never die!

Kyle needs to buy an Aussie now to replace the spider gears! If not, there is a slim chance I still have some gears laying around from when I regeared last summer, if not, I'm sure you and plenty of other folks have them from when a lunchbox install.

yeah, i killed my spider gears in the d-30.

i want to get an aussie so bad but i just spent $350 on the lift and $295 on the sliders in the last 2 weeks so I cant bring myself to spend another $250 on the jeep right now.

calvin just had an aussie put in so I am gonna head out to kennesaw tomorrow to pick to up his old spiders.

I am uploading my pics right now, post the link when they are done.

I should have rode Saturday also, but when I got home Friday night I jumped into a 1/2 gallon of Rum. Glad the ran held off Saturday, I didn't think it would, when I got up it had been raining off and on at my house so I took my time getting down to pick up the Jeep.

Doug, glad yall enjoyed the cake, we enjoyed spending a few hours with yall and meeting everyone. Donna said she gave Linda the recipe before, but if Linda lost it she will give it back to herl. It's actually my Mom's recipe but Donna has perfected it pretty good.

Thanks again to everyone, I had a great time and my Dad can't quit talking about it.

Sorry about the gears Kyle.  That's a good excuse to upgrade tho...

That was a great weekend all in all.  I had a blast once again.  Sounds like I just missed the rain so I am kind of glad I left on Saturday.

The look on Will's face when Mike's jeep was in that ditch was priceless!  I've never seen Will be that quiet.

The H3 did pretty well once I learned to just let the traction control do it's job up front when in Tripod mode.  Without the rear locker and the traction control, IFS would BLOW CHUNKS.  Can't wait to get a front locker.

When/where's the next trip?  {letseat}

First thing is cut the crushed ends off the bumper. Then I am trying to get someone on JKowners who might still have their stock steering stabilizer. If not that might be where my Bday cash goes at the end of the month along with the relocation bracket. I also need to relocate or skid the evap canister. It I am going to do all this with a low belly I need to protect that thing. I almost would rather skid it to avoid any warranty issues that might come up from moving it.

The boulder climb.  The climb where you rode was smooth sailing.  Here's a pic:

Yeah you moved a few huge boulders on that cimb. None of them were seated, so each one you drove over moved a little.

I don't mean to post the picture again.... but I just realized today something interesting about this:

That was in 2nd gear, 4lo. Today I wanted to see just how fast 2nd gear in 4 low will get me, and it topped out at 15mph.

Hard to believe the Jeep did that at, or under 15mph! It was a pretty steep incline and got up to what little speed it was going, pretty quick.

The 4-lo gear ratio of 2.73 to 1 is good at makig low-end torque.  ;)  Think if that ratio was lower, like 4:1 in a Rubicon transfer case. Talk about torque!  :)

What I can't believe is that first gear ratio in your 6 speed trans,  4.46:1. I would never have guessed it to be that low. I bet that thing really crawls in first

Yeah, I am just surprised it did that with such little speed.

Yup, 1st gear on the 6spd is very low.... I don't use it around town, it's just too low, I start in 2nd, and it feels just a tad higher then most cars 1st gear. I like the 6spd alot and the slightly lower geared OD will help when bigger tires go on, but 1st gear is odd... it's too low for road use, but not low enough to be a granny gear.

It crawls really well in 1st, which is why I was barely moving and then it would plop down on the belly... put it in 2nd and hit the gas (not wide open tho) and it launched it!

It's quite obvious to me that the biggest thing holding me back is that transfercase skid plate.... much more so then lockers. Going with a lift/bigger tires still dosen't get rid of the problem, so I've been looking at belly-up kits... they require some othing things too, some of them being a SYE/CV driveshaft. I am still on the fence if I want to put money into the 231, could always do a 4:1 kit in the future (lower gearing isn't really needed right now) or just hold off and leave the 231 as-is, and try to find a Rubi 4:1 case. Even in the future when I go to 33" tires, the stock 2.73:1 low range should provide ample crawl in 1st gear, right?

I want to build the Jeep as I go, and learn to wheel it the best I can with minimal mods each step of the way. That road grader is just dragging on everything, and kept getting me hung up. Between a belly-up skid plate and 1" body lift, I can gain another 3.5" of clearance at the belly, 31" tires (which is the plan to replace the GS-A's when they wear out) and a 2" BB in the future would increase that another 2.5", for a total of 6" greater belly clearance, which would be a night and day difference from me being stuck sitting on the belly, or driving over stuff.

Love that dirt falling out of the skid while you're airborne!

Forget the 4:1 with that 1st gear.   That's a nice advantage.   You will want to regear those axles when you go to larger tires for drivability on the street and fuel mileage, otherwise kiss 6th goodbye, maybe 5th to if you go 35's.  Your crawl will improve with the gears too, and with that low of a 1st gear, you can move the 4:1 down the list IMHO.

DO NOT regear the 231 to 4to1 those kits break way to easy and way too often. Buy a $180 sye and put in your 231 for when you lift it just to "get you by".

Thanks! lol, I keep looking back to that picture... it's just not something you see often, especially on a bone stock Jeep! Plus, the timing of it... I mean, without the picture it wouldn't be the same.

I've heard good and bad about the 231 4:1 kit, for the price of the kit alone I could just about pickup a used Rubi 4:1 case, then get a little money back by selling my 231 (maybe a bit more if the SYE was installed).... skipping that idea is probably a good thing.

Ya'll are exactly right, about learning to wheel it first and do what gets me by.

Which is why I want my first big mods to be the belly-up transfercase skid.... this past weekend at River Rock it was just dragging on everything, and is why I kept getting hung up, I would be crawling over something fine and then it would just lay flat down on the skid, it hangs so low. '03-'06 have a much lower xfercase skid plate then '97-'02. If I was to pick 1 thing to make my Jeep more capable as it is right now, it would be replacing that skid plate, even over lockers.

The kit requires a SYE, which from what I have been reading, also requires a new CV driveshaft. Thats where I was torn between spending money in the 231 or not, From everything I did so far, I am happy with the low range as it is.

I am surprised at the factory GS-A's, now with almost 46k on them, they've still got a good bit of life left, they should make it to 60k. I was first going to get 33's, but I want to get 31's first, once those wear out, then 33's. I think a long term goal would be 35's and probably no bigger, but I am not even planning that far ahead yet, next is 31's (in a M/T). I've got 3.73 gears, and from what I've been reading up, they should be fine up to 33's. I feel the Jeep is geared too low as it is, I don't even use 1st gear on the street, heck in 2H it redlines in 1st around 20mph. Not that I normally (actually just about never) run to redline, it's lucky if it sees 3k RPM between shifts (now the BMW on the other hand.... :) )I think the 31's will help even out the gearing, and 33's on my Jeep would probably be a nice setup with the current gearing.

my 6th is OD, which is actually a lower final drive then the 5spd OD (.78 for 5spd vs .84 for 6spd) so if tires/gears are the same, I'll be spinning a higher RPM in OD compared to a 5spd in OD, which should also help with still being able to use OD on the highway with bigger tires. As it is now, Overdrive 6th will pull me up the small hills around here at 45mph no problem.

I've been researching Jeeps and Jeep stuff for several years now on JeepForums, sometimes I'll kill hours just searching thru the posts to learn information. I already made my first goof, I told myself I was going to get a '03-'06 Rubicon, but thru a series of events, I got my Sport... shes got the 4.0, manual and Dana44 (were all a must) and while the 4:1 and F/R lockers would be nice, and probably save money on the long run, the Sport was cheaper to buy...plus, I am forced to learn to wheel the open diff Sport instead of just flipping the locker switch. It bugged the heck outta me the first 2-3 weels after I got my Jeep, now I am happy with it and it's no big deal anymore. I was quite amazed at the things it was able to do at RR totally stock.

1 gear (6 speed) gives me 4.460:1 and when I drop it in 4LO, 1st gear 2,000 RPMS (2.6 mph) I am at 73.14:1

I've been meaning to post up and ask anyone if they found a gearwrench socket set at RR. I thought I left it on the trailer when we were working on it, but as luck would have it I found it today after I went and bought a new set. I left it on top of my XJ when I was pulling my hylift jack from my luggage rack. It made the ride all the way home on the roof. Now I have a trail set and a shop set.

I thought I left it on the trailer when we were working on it, but as luck would have it I found it today after I went and bought a new set. I left it on top of my XJ when I was pulling my hylift jack from my luggage rack. It made the ride all the way home on the roof. Now I have a trail set and a shop set.

it is amazing how stuff like that always happens.

I drove around with the lugs from my spare on the rear bumper for a good 20 miles of highway last week.  {whack3} I'm not forgetful.

Sounds to me like you guys drive like a couple of grandmas.  :D
I gotcha Grandma.(LOL) I only pull at 70 on backroads, I prefer to be called SMOOTH. {hihi}

My final ratio is 97:1 now, and it crawls smoooooth. nice control on the rocks...thats with the 6 speed, 4.46:1 1st, 4:1 case, and 5:13 gears
