Flip, flop and roll over situations....
After my flop, Clarks flip and seeing the picture
of Jared. I want us to us to give tips and thoughts
about safety in certain situations we may encounter.

This picture scares the hell out of me......
looking at that rock and if they went over on Jays side!!

I flop over several years ago onto the passenger side
of my Jeep. It was a slow motion flop over on a dirt bank.
My daughter and her friend was in the jeep. We had the top
and doors off. I remember seeing the ground coming at us
and then landed. It wasn't a hard hit but it was scary. My
daughter started screaming let me out felling claustrophobic.
She and her friend was able to crawl out the back. I had never
thought about giving instructions on keeping hands or limbs
inside the Jeep. Never thought I would flip either......
So when I started over (on drivers side) at AOP in October
I tucked my hands into my harness and actually looked at
where I was going to land. Thank the Lord the rock was not
inline with my head.
I know Jason, Todd and Randy have all went over at
Gulches and I believe Kirk went over at Moab once.
Wasn't it Chocco where Chris went over into some trees?
(The tree falling on Jareds Jeep is a whole different story!)
What are some do's and don'ts or tips for these situations?
-
Safety for mine was the lap belt portion of the harnesses being tightened down sufficiently. I think a factory roll bar would have survived the impact, and maybe factory seat belts would have held fine, but I know my cage and harnesses worked great.

Good to think about these things. Reminds me of my ex brother in law and his business partner when one had a Ferarri 308 and the other one a 930 turbo and they started club racing. They soon realized that in order to continue with that "sport" they needed to purchase the proper equipment. Having lots of expendable income and living in NC, they would buy Terry Labonte's previous year NASCAR (without running gear) and build their own running gear. They started racing in the Walter Middie <sp?> series and they knew they were in the safest cars on the road courses.
I think everyone needs to play to their own level of risk. I don't have a cage and don't want to scar up my rig so I stay away for the big stuff. I could stop flip or flop on any trail but the changes and risk are mitigated. I feel comfortable that the factory cage will get me through one of those. Maybe, maybe not.
If you want to play with the big boys, get big boy equipment. If I decide to do that, I'll either mod my current JKR or buy/build something that I won't have to worry about it.
-
I've owned 3 Jeeps and all have had cages. When I rolled in Moab I just had the stock seatbelt, and it was fine for a slow roll, but I put in a harness right afterwards.
-
Good topic. Just good to keep it in everyone's mind.
The pic of me above isn't as bad as it looks. I think the passenger rear shock still has some travel so the tire was firmly planted.

Good thread and good pic but just a comment, I thought JC was stable through that if that is on Upper Heldorado. I didn't have that back angle to see the tire droop but he seemed perfectly fine.
yep, Helderado. That Boulder field after the offcamber section through the big rocks.
I was spotting/picture taking...he really was not that tippy at all, that LJ works well.
-
When I rolled at Choocoo ( 3 rolls) I had new cage and factory seatbelts. Ridding with others is one of the best safety equipment.

Glad he wasn't.....good picture for people to see how it could
happen and what might happen when you hit the ground.
It still scares me when I look at it because 2 more feet and my
head would have landed on a rock when I flopped over. Just
trying to raise awareness on the possibility's.
-
Its good to talk about this. The more it comes up, the better chance we have to react with the right instinct (hands in, harness tight) should it happen to us.
-
Only laid mine over on the side of escalator at moab. No body damage but was completely sideways. I just reversed out. My next mod is a cage of some sort. Either bolt in or welded. I have been rolling the dicxe for far too many years now. My wheeling style is not crazy but I pick some crazy lines sometimes which leave very little room for error. If you have a wheeling rig I would go look at optic armour for windshields. Lexan won't break in a roll.

So building on all of the points discussed. Would it make sense to have a helmet and wear it? If so, what type of helmet would be sufficient?
-
I've thought about it for sure.....hadn't done anything yet.

It was an extremely conservative line. I'm surprised this one was used for a potm. :)

Axel off road at one time made helmets not sure of any one else and they are not around anymore

I have looked at Pro Tec Skate board helmets and have been taking my white water helmet with me on rides. I feel like as long as I don't have lockers I'm safe from the scary stuff. But the off camber stuff is scary anyways. I am currently looking at Cage options and possibly welding part of it myself. And using the Poison Spyder Bolt in kit.

Any idea the helmet brand/type the Moab locals were using?

I have one of the Axel helmets, pretty sure it's the old style he first came out with. It has a sticker inside it from whoever the manufacturer is that says something like "not for motorized use". It looks like a skateboard/freeride bike helmet from the material and construction.
I have been carrying it and never put it on. When I get back from a ride I have often thought that I should have been wearing it. This thread may just be the reminder I needed to put it on. I got it because I am a tall guy in a small cab, so even though my cage is padded it's likely I could hit that or another part of the cab and get hurt pretty bad. It better than nothing but its not going to protect like a Snell certified helmet.

Do you have race padding, or the stuff that will melt into your skin if it catches fire?

The front crossbar is actual race padding with a pleather cover. The sides and main hoop are melt your face off stuff.

When talking about hand placement, don't forget to not grab around a part of the cage itself. Instead have some type of grab handle mounted on the cage or dash. If I were to put my hand around my cage the sheetmetal roof would probably collapse down and crush my fingers between the tubing and sheetmetal. For open top jeeps that means your fingers are going to be in between the cage and ground.
Here is an example of a bad situation:
-
Next time I go to Moab I have told myself I will try at least once to climb rockpile and/or the waterfall at the end of Helldorado. I will for sure have a helmet on for that.
We will see though. Internet talk and on the trail are two very different things. The first trip to Moab when I made one attempt on rockpile I decided real quick to change my mind.
Gary on rockpile

And a successful try:

Justin welded mine angled in a little just for that reason. I know it's not the choice placement during a roll, but nice adjustment to have just in case someone accidentally grabs it anyway

Information I posted after the 2015 Moab trip:
I don't recall this topic being covered in this thread, so if it is a duplicate, forgive me.
Gary educated us on a couple of safety factors to consider after a rollover:
1) as the occupant of the rolled vehicle, you should not attempt to immediately undo your seatbelt/harness. In fact, you should wait for other wheelers to come to your rescue before attempting to get out of the situation. The reason is that the vehicle may not be stable and either your movement or the vehicles position may put you in a more dangerous position. Obviously there could be exceptions, such as the vehicle being on fire, but in general, wait for help.
2) safety harnesses are superior to factory seat belts, especially if after being right-sided your vehicle is positioned in a manner where the seat belt cannot be buckled again. In Gary's case, he rolled on an obstacle, was right-sided, and then he decided to attempt the obstacle again; however, he was in a position where he couldn't fasten the factory belt and then he rolled again. Yep, not smart to attempt to continue without the belt being fastened, but a situation can be envisioned where even getting off an obstacle could present a perilous situation.

WRT Gary's flip on Rockpile and Clark's in Mickey's, either might have been recoverable with an auto slammed into reverse. With a manual transmission that's likely impossible.
When doing something like the hot tubs it's crucial to not apply the brakes, but just to roll back when you don't make it. Again, reflexes can make that difficult.
Many people I've talked to suggest grabbing the wheel with both hands during a roll or flop.

I think grabbing the steering wheel could end badly in a roll where the steering wheel is jerked from side to side as the wheels/tires get banged around. I'll be grabbing my harness, if my mind works fast enough. I can't remember what I grabbed when I flipped.

Driver, I'll try to keep my hands on the steering wheel (thumbs and fingers outside) and turtle.
Passenger, I'l grabbing my harness or the oh-shit bar directly in front of me if there is one and turtling.

I agree on turtle! Am I crazy in thinking the steering wheel will over power my grip on it and increase risk of harm to my appendages? What benefit do you think comes from holding onto the steering wheel versus grabbing the harness?
Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

At least one hand is already on the wheel; doesn't require thought to move it. YMMV
-
You should never have your "thumbs in" on the wheel when offroad, unless you like risking a broken thumb.

I can't tell exactly what happened there. And who is the idiot that has the baby in his arms down by the rolled buggy?
-
I've seen several videos where Jeeps flip over, freaks me out. My truck isn't capable of getting in a position to flip (I think)
Curious, is it the wheel base, to high a lift, wrong line, freak accident? Which model is (if any) "least likely " to flip . I've never been in or drove any kind of Jeep, so I don't know how one handles compared to the other. I'm sure there are many variables to my questions.
Thanks
-
Curious, is it the wheel base, to high a lift, wrong line, freak accident?
Yes.
I would say freak accident is the least likely cause though. With enough experience and a good spotter, you shouldn't have anything unexpected happen

Hey guys, been away for a bit but I'm back.
When I flopped at Choccolocco Park I slid backwards and the left rear tire hit the corner of one of those water run off cut outs and it flipped me right over on my top. I laid over in the passenger seat

If it would have went over I am positive it would have kicked AJs jeep out of gear and down the hill and possibly followed it. It was super steep on that spot. We joked about dukes of hazard jump but it would have done it for I bet.

Sort of a flop situation. The passenger side tire was wedged against a rock keeping it from going further over. The slider may have been on the ground as well.

And this one counts as a flop. If I had gone slower I don't think it would have gone over. I tried to let it roll out of it and turn away from the ditch which was a mistake. It just pulled me back in with the speed and when it caught the other side of the ditch the momentum sent me over.

Yep, think it broke his side window out as well.

Only had 1 flop and 1 complete roll so far. I have had a tree or or wall save me a few times though :)
3rd image is the roll, I hit the driver side first(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171013/4d58606032fb28c7862dce58f4de9b18.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171013/680672fb16ab938be377d94cea5a0288.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171013/084ff6626c9cbbddb832ec8cbde30ece.jpg)

Are some rigs/drivers more prone?
Probably more-so line selection. I never flipped or flopped my JKU. Also never would have tried the obstacles i do now

uh, can O worms... ha ha.

I think it has to more with wheelbase
& line selection.

Are some rigs/drivers more prone?
Yes. I've seen lot of rigs roll/flop... suspension, center of gravity, and definitely drivers all play a part. I know a few people who can't drive worth a flip and use a bigger motor as their way to bounce up a trail or spot. Best thing is seat time. Knowing how your rig feels/ sounds/ looks when it's getting close to going and what to do when it acts like it. I ground my shifter gate in order to slam reverse from 1st and have used it several times.

it actually was mine, that was what Sam was using for leverage..

Yeah your right
you only had a strap on....no winch

Sort of a flop situation. The passenger side tire was wedged against a rock keeping it from going further over. The slider may have been on the ground as well.

And this one counts as a flop. If I had gone slower I don't think it would have gone over. I tried to let it roll out of it and turn away from the ditch which was a mistake. It just pulled me back in with the speed and when it caught the other side of the ditch the momentum sent me over.

Here is a video from Choccolocco of a close call for a backflip. If it had popped back quicker of the ledge I was stuck on or if I gave it more gas it could have been interesting. This was the first time Katie had ever been 4wheeling with me.

That is Crawford’s cry. I was told that I lifted and that is why it rolled. So next time I will not lift. [no]

Man, that trail is gnarly. I have only walked it, but it was steep and rough. Some water too I think

That's the reason I added a door bar to mine instead of leaving it open like it originally was. Just something to be cognizant of when you wheel without doors

He could have easily got his hand caught up in that or his face. I'm guessing that it was a slow flop and he a few seconds to look and think.

Good call. Just up from Grapvine. Those are some tough trails in that area of the park.

I’ve done the slabs a few times but last time I hugged that tree too much and about flopped it over into the slab
