I am planning on doing a video of this one. In the past I havn't taken the time to "really" make a good video. This year I'm going to try to put something really good together. The turn at hogpen gap was an awesome shot last year. Don't know if were heading that way again but if we are I would like to set up there again. Doug, could we get together sometime or phone confrence so I can plan some great shot locations? Thanks.
-
Absolutely. Thanks. I'll reach out as soon as I have the final route.
-
What's the route?
-
Ya, any info on the route, I know you like to scout it first Doug but what's up your sleeve?
-
I've never released the route in advance. It's not set yet. Only the starting spot..
-
Is their an ending location for dinner decided yet?

Always a lot of fun.
Mexican in Hiawasee was very good last year.
-
Hoping to make this. Trying to figure out something to do with the boys that day. Thinking about getting a hotel in Helen...where are hotel people staying? Will post up in check-in thread when 100%.
-
From Last Year
-
I'm in.
-
Probably not going to make it, Wendy is having a minor surgery and I will have to be taking care of things.

Sorry to hear you won't make it. Hope all goes well with the surgery and recovery.

I should be up for this. Need to take the Jeep into the shop to get the sticking caliper fixed, but that should not take two weeks. Me +3
Also, my new neighbor is a Jeep guy so I'll try and recruit him as well. It's time I get back in the woods.
-
I would like to attend this ride. Is there somewhere I have to register? I have never been out with your group. Thanks for your help. :-)

@Doug... Full size rigs going to be ok this year?
-
I thought that I wasn't going to be able to make it due to being out of town that weekend but everything worked out. This is always a great ride and a fun event. Can't wait to see y'all out there. Looks like it's going to be a bit chilly for topless weather though.
-
@Doug... Full size rigs going to be ok this year?
Yes

The 2 toilets we passed today were closed due to beng frozen.

I am looking to join GATR as a CORE member. This would be my first ride out with the group. Is there anything special I need to bring as in camping gear or anything? Also I am wondering If my truck would be to wide for the trails in Helen. Thank you any info would be appreciated.

This ride is open so these arent required this time but I never go without them on any form of ride

-
Just because it is an open ride doesn't mean they aren't "required", but for the FS road ride there is some leeway with what is required to ride. For future rides and just for good measure, they are all important items to have in your rig.
-
Due to screwed up shipping I busted my butt last year installing a CB between ambulance calls the night prior. Could I have shown up without one and still rode? Yeah probably, but I respected that Doug wanted everyone possible to have one to keep communication flowing. I think meeting the requirements is the least someone can do to take care of themselves when there are 50+ others involved.
-
yes, you could have ridden with us, and we would have put you between 2 folks with radios to keep you in the loop as needed, but everyone is welcome on this trip.
This should be a great day and we will see a lot of mountains and trails.
At the moment, but I wasn't going to, but now I'm planning to end up near Helen. We may have an additional optional trail that leads us into dark if folks are interested...let me know.
-
Since this will be our first ride, was wanting to know if for whatever reason, someone needs to head back home before the trail ride is done, is that possible, or once inline you must first reach the end of the destination?

@Bear
Great question.
You can leave at anytime.
All we ask is that you let one of the club members know that you are ok, and just heading out and don't need assistance. We will help with directions if need be.
Also PLEASE let the rig behind you know so the rest of the group doesn't end up at your house! Lol.
-
I wheeled with you last year and it was a blast!! Well organized!! I expect the answer is no, but I am unable to make the start time. Is there a way to meet up in the early afternoon? If not that's a bummer for me but I understand.

Yes! Call me and leave a message. .. spotty service. ... and I will call you and tell you a place and a time. .. when you know when.
Everyone should grab the member phone number sheet for the ride.
-
Excellent! And thanks!
Where can the member sheet be found?

I've been told the trails will accommodate a full size rig... Come on out... Will be good to have another Power Wagon on the ride...

Doug,
Are any of these roads on our route? I think the Conasauga district is the dalton area but I wasn't sure.
Conasauga Winter Road Closures
Tuesday, December 30, 2014 1:00 AM
District Ranger Jeff Gardner plans to close the following roads on the Conasauga Ranger District for the winter, starting January 5, 2015 until March 6. As a result, Grassy Mountain, Lake Conasauga, Betty Gap, Three Forks and Ball Field will be inaccessible by vehicle. The closed roads include West Cowpen FS 17 south from the intersection with Mill Creek FS 630; Potato Patch FS 68 at Potato Patch Mountain; and Three Forks Road FS 64 at Potato Patch Mountain and Jacks River Fields campground. Visitors will still be able to utilize Jacks River Fields campground. View a map of the closed roads. This closure is due to the constant freezing and thawing conditions that cause the roadbeds to become soft, resulting in a public safety hazard as well as rutting and significant resource damage.

Yes, it was VERY cold last year. I'll probably remove the top before the ride starts. Doors on, seat heaters, heater on full blast. Fun.

Hahah I forgot about that. It was a Church bus that was selling doughnuts. They just happened to be in the parking lot. I ate doughnuts all day which is the reason we weren't hungry come dinner.
-
We will end up near Helen early dinner time, for those that want to eat there. No plans.
-
Ok. My copilot/key grip has cancelled on me. I really need a co-driver or someone that can handle a camera. I can't drive and video at the same time. Anyone willing to help let me know.
-
I'll let my 6 month old daughter ride with you. Just tape a bottle to the underside of the camera and she can hold it up for you //;D//
-
With 77 people signed up, are we going all in one group, or splitting it up like a golf scramble where different groups start on different trails? This is going to be a line of rigs well over 1/4 mile long, nose to tail (assuming 20ft per). Crazy cool! Props to everyone helping organize this.

I woke up yesterday with a HORRIBLE sore throat. By the time I got home last night, I could hardly swallow water even. I got up first thing this morning and went to the doctor. Thankfully it wasn't strep and just a plain old sore throat. They gave me a shot in the ass of cortisone and B12. I'm feeling much better and definitely plan to be there tomorrow. I was planning to go topless but will probably keep it up now.
-
Yeah take care of yourself. Nasty stuff going around.
-
19 in hiawassee this morning!

Yummy Waffle house...

Big thanks to Doug for organizing today's ride. It's a lot of work and, all things considered, everything went very smoothly. Back home and worn out! That BBQ was good....y'all missed it! Only took a few pics, but had video running for a while today. Will need to peruse for anything worth posting. Great to meet some new folks and hopefully we will see you on other rides in the near future!
-
You guys were all awesome through everything today.
Mark @ranier You are the man! Thanks for help doing whatever all day.
Thanks to all the other members that helped. There is no way we could do this without a team effort.
Thanks to all that showed up and hung in there when we had to stop and had our hold ups.
After lunch we had a control arm fall off a rig and one over heat... hope that was temporary.
Came off the trail in the dark and headed to BBQ. Thanks Mark again for the recommendation, sorry you couldn't join us... it hit the spot.. leftovers for tomorrow.
Most of all, thanks to all for the generosity for Bobbys nephew Reid. You guys amazed all of us and Bobby left with a sizable donation for the family.
Hope everyone made it home safely.
-

I couldn't have said it better myself. Amazing club, staff, and members!
-
Big Big thanks to Doug, Chris, Rob for all the pre riding last week to make sure our route was ready to roll. It takes a lot of planning to make what seems simple, a ride though the woods, work for 70+ rigs.
No other club could pull it off. No other club has members like ours, period!
The 2015 ride year has officially started!!!!!!!!!

How did the powerwagon do Brent?
Doug, did you record the trail ride for uploading on everytrail app?

Nope sorry

Doug, did you record the trail ride for uploading on everytrail app?
Power Wagon did great... Had no problem with any of the trails except maybe being a little to fat... Got some nice new pinstripes from the ride... By the way... Does anyone know a good detail guy... Ha...
-
Brent your Power Wagon looked great! I'd love to have a 3/4 gas burner.
-
I wasn't able to take any cheap video without my wife riding with me [probably a ten year anniversary joke to be had there] but is there a youtube/link for the vid that was taken? Sorry I wasn't sure who specifically was shooting, but I do some vids for work and can relate to that feeling of "damn my battery is dead."
I would like to show the blue taco on that first little creek crossing with my daughter riding up front waving :)
Cheers
Tom
