RIDE PLANS :

FRIDAY:  park opens at 8am...members will arrive throughout the day to set up camp and wheel.  There will be no structured Friday rides.  Get together with those that are there and work out wheeling plans.  Camp fires and what not Friday night at sundown.  GaTR ride rules apply to all that come Friday and wheel as a GaTR club member.

SATURDAY:  9:30am(Alabama time) riders meeting.  We will break into groups of like wheeling capabilities and head out to hit the rocks.  The park is not too big so lunch can be back at the camp sites at 1pm.  After lunch we can re-group, stay in the same groups, make bigger groups, smaller groups, whatever may seem to make the wheeling better.  Wheel for the rest of the day.  Camp fires and more what not at sun down.  Maybe a little night wheeling if a group feels up to it.

IDK...I'll have my spare tire on, that could upset the balance.  You should have a great shot at it, with that automatic and those tires.

I booked the Fairfield right off of I-20.  I chose the $94 rate that can be cancelled up to 1 day in advance.  I can change if there is consensus on another place everyone is staying and lobby party.

josh (JvC) and I are leaving Ohio on Thursday afternoon, 2/9. will spend the night somewhere in Tennessee, depending on how long we drive, probably just north of Chattanooga. Were both trailering our rigs.  We will probably arrive in camping area around 10, CST, on Friday morning. we will probably just hang, unless someone gets there Friday afternoon and wants to go for a ride.

I'm thinking about making this ride also, only dilemma is that I'm still running a stock rig and not too sure of how many trails I'll be able to run.

You can hit every trail if you wheel part of Friday and Saturday.

Here's a map with all of the trail names. Keep in mind, most of the red trails are actually red (like buggy in 5th gear red) //NASTY//

If the weather is right, I'll camp over Saturday night.  It'd be awesome to get a good fire going and pass around some booze...and tell lies.

If the weather is right, I'll camp over Saturday night.  It'd be awesome to get a good fire going and pass around some booze...and tell lies.

EDIT:

Right now I'm out of camping:

We were supposed to have a monsoon at Hale last year on Saturday...we got almost zero rain and it was a great day of wheeling.  Good night wheeling to as a matter of fact!

I think it was supposed to rain on every trip I've made with GATR the past 7 months, and the weather has been great for each one. Hopefully this holds true for next weekend so I can make it

If we're talking about 'The' big GA Jeepers club on Facebook, f'ck those p'ssys.  I normally try to refrain from using derogatory language but they pulled that PC crap on me when I called them out on a thread - horrible jeep builds, ghetto or shitty, can't say anything negative.  I HATE they use Church and Jeeps together.  If they want to be a Christian first club there is NO excuse for leaving it out of their name except they KNOW it will lower their membership and swag sales which is what it is all about, not the Church. I deleted that group from my facebook and a couple others and I have truly be blessed for it as I no longer have to see all the shitty builds and dumber than rocks questions that popped up every day.  Sorry to go nuclear on this post but I am thankful there is a group like this one to ride and share fellowship with and I'm looking forward to this ride though I'm also really kicking myself I haven't fixed the bent control arm or front driver side issue (maybe UB bad don't know).  Thinking I'll just trailer it to Chocco, hope for the best, and see if 4x4King wants to take my trailer back to the shop for a fee.

Nail, head - you hit it.  I was like, WTF?  Read the very first sticky post.  They have 17k members and 5 likes on that.  LMAO

Is anyone camping Saturday night?
I am not camping on Saturday night.  The rain on Sunday, plus the fact I'm hoteling on Friday night is what is keeping me from camping.  The weather looks awesome for Friday and Saturday!

Patrick, are you coming up on Friday?

I got to work, so if I did I wouldn't get there until 10ish. I plan on coming up Saturday morning and getting there 8-8:30. I could be convinced to get there earlier if anyone wants to meet somewhere for breakfast...

I'll probably still camp if we have a sat night ride, if not I'll just make the journey home that evening.

Is everyone else hotelling it Saturday night?

Yes, that is part of Hells Revenge.  It is not a trail that anyone has to get on.  There is a place to turn around and go another route just prior to the trail.

And an alternate trail that bypasses that spot that is challenging, but less that the main section.

The problem with a lunch departure is you may very a couple of hours of riding in, but if you leave early in the morning you can get the entire day, since this crew will be there early this time.  Usually being there in the morning means messing around until th late morning crew shows up.

Hell's Revenge and boat ramp are the only trails there where my 38ish tires have a benefit, that i can remember.  Wes has run all of the main trails on his bfg 35s, iirc.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure it's me, Rob, John, beve, and jvc and we're on 39s or bigger.

For the early Friday guys...any particular trails you want to hit while we are a relatively light and nimble crew?  We can likely cover a bunch of the park, if we have a plan.

I'll look at the map later, but throw out the trails that really turn you on.

Friday crew.  Here is a suggested trail plan (we used this route last April and we had fun).  I'm open to any/all suggestions.

35 to 41 "Tombstone" to 34 "Rubicon"At the end of Rubicon come down 7 and we will be at the bottom of Tee Pee.   We can go up Tee Pee (or 7 which is the bypass). At the top of tee pee, go left. Take 23 "M&M" down, right on 41, left on 4 (intersect with 5), stay on 4.  Left up 32 "Redneck", go right on 29 Playground (it's the little blue loop) and then left at the top to back on your course at top go left on 5, left on 4, pass redneck to 61 "Hillbilly", at top go left on 5, left on 4 pass redneck and hillbilly, left on 28 "pick your poison". At top, left on 29, left on 5, left on 4. Go check out Boat ramp.  Anyone game?  Then we can go on 41 to the climb "Tombstone". At the top, left on 41 to 12, left on 51, down 7, take a right to 54 "Buzzards Loop". This will take us past 9 "Chainsaw" and then 40 "Terminator". Take rights at the top of either and take 51 to 7 and rinse and repeat.   We continue on 54 and then check out Execute.   Loop back on 51 to 7 and then follow 35 to a right on 14 then a right on 1 and we can then check out 19 "hells revenge" Between Hells and Cherry  Bomb we could run up 15 and hit 8 Carnage Canyon real quick.  It's a fun little creek bed
and then 10 "cherry bomb"

Sounds like a plan. Other than Hells but what the "Hell".  Have we ever done Chainsaw?

Sent from my SM-G860P using Tapatalk

I honestly don't remember whether we did Chainsaw.  All of this is a guideline, we will assess conditions and adjust accordingly.  I also realize that my post references the "old" out of date map.  I will review on the Avenza map and update later this week.

For those people camping Friday night. Do you typically set up in the wooded campground, scenic campground, lower campground, or overlook campground. And are there actual camp sites or just an open area and make your own spot kind of thing?

I don't know the name of it, but they usually camp at the top of the hill, above the secondary parking lot, to the left when you come up the main drag (the outhouse / main parking lot will be on the either).

It's first come, first served..just mark your spot and setup camp.

Ok, the dangers of business travel and time in your hotel room after dinner.  I reviewed the latest PDF map for Chocco here - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26835209/CHOC.pdf

Here is a revised suggested route.  We can/will adjust based on conditions and the prevailing preferences of the group.

Parking to Forney Rd (heading past the rest rooms/showers to your left).  Left on scenic view.  Follow scenic view to Tombstone.  Right on Tombstone, bear right on Rebel Ridge.  First left up (cross Tombstone) to Rubicon.  Take Rubicon to the end, left down bypass.
Left up Teepee.  At top, left on Rubicon and left down bypass, left to Tombstone.
Follow Tombstone all the way around (left loop).  Tombstone to right on Picnic.  Left on Broadway, right on Boundary, left on redneck to Playground.
At the top of Playground, left down Broadway, Left on Boundary to Boat Ramp.
At top of Boat Ramp, left on Tombstone, left down Broadway, left on Boundary.
Pass Boat Ramp and check out Hold my Beer or head to the climb on Tombstone or other trails in that section.
Climb Tombstone and Check out the Rock Slab midway up Tombstone.  At top of either, go left, right on Phoenix, left on Pond Rd.  Follow Pond Rd. to right on Bypass (near Rubicon/Teepee).  Take bypass to scenic view to right on Fizzle to right on Baha to left on Arsenal.  Arsenal to right on Revenge Trail to Hells Revenge.  At top of Hells Revenge, right on Gauntlet, left on Carnage Canyon, right on Gauntlet down to right on Cherry Bomb.

@clark123456   Dont forget your tires work great on dry steel stuff like this. Ground clearance or not.

Here is a video of Rob from awhile back,it's like boat ramp but dry. Well a lot tougher to get to the slab than boat ramp. It's either backside 1 or 2.

Does anybody have an accurate map of the place? It seems like the last time that I was there which was year before last, there was trails that were not even found on the map. Not to mention we had to navigate down a very very steep hill that was a great test of how good my brakes not to mention nerves were.

It looks like you need the Avenza stuff, but remember there is a problem with the Avenza relationship with the vendor of the maps, so spend wisely.

If it hasn't been mentioned...GoogleMaps is accurate, as is my Garmin.  You will think you're in the wrong area since you have to drive through a residential neighborhood (old school neighborhood) before you encounter the path to the mountain.  Slow driving from the time you enter town, since it is a college town and mainly residential area.

No need to torture yourself, this is supposed to be fun.   //cheers2//

We're not very formal on the drivers meeting on Fridays depending on the group.  Just cover a few important things.

It shouldn't be too hard to hit the top of the hill and call out to us on Channel 7 if you're late, or for those that arrive earlier than expected.

I'll be PM'ing my Jeep tonight and tomorrow night.  I had a rattle at low speed that was driving me crazy.  It took a while to find, but it was a loose bolt on the RROR transfer case skid.  I went through and retorqued all of them. Need to give the whole rig a once over.

Got a new brake installed on the mini bike last night.  The one that came with the kit sucked and wouldn't stop the damn thing.  This is a band brake that goes around the clutch and will lock up the rear wheel.  I'll be brining it with me.

For those that are camping, they are calling for rain on Sunday.  I hope it holds off until you get packed up!

Guys I am going to have to Bail unfortunately. I have been chasing a leaking tire that I think I have isolated to a bad stem, although the bead leaks a little too. Its the tire that I popped the bead on last month at Morris. I just haven't had time or energy to deal with it.

If it were a dedicated trail rig I wouldn't be as concerned. But its also supposed to be a daily driver...@Raisinhead warned me about getting used to the beater for commuting purposes.

Also, I think I could use another weekend after my surgery. That said I have been feeling better than I have in a long time.

Just decided to camp instead of doing the Hampton.  Even though they had a 48 hour cancellation, they allow me to cancel since I'm an Honors Member.

Feel better Jimbo @Blue J , probably a smart move!

I've got to call them...I didn't realize it was a 48 hour policy until I tried to cancel a few minutes ago!

That's the only reason there is uncertainty. No kids if I'm camping, but not 100% either way

Ok. So Mark and I arrived at the Hampton Inn about 20 min ago. This place is nice and pretty new.

Lobby beverages...
