Title: Applebee's in Dawsonville
Post by: Big Dave on March 31, 2017, 08:14:09 PM
A long running joke in my house has been, if you see a "help wanted" sign- don't go there. Well.....

Tonight we went to dinner @ Applebee's & as we pulled up my daughter noticed the sign. We stopped anyway.

I asked the waitress what IPAs they had on tap. Her response was Budwieser. Lol. Strike one.
I felt froggie & ordered a October Fest beer. I thought it was weird. It's not fall.
They bring out a Sweetwater 420. Sweet!!! Strike two.
She comes back to our table not once, not twice, not three times but....... 4 fawking times to ask us to verify our order. Strike five.

We polity ask the manager to do a welfare check on her. Seriously. My wife thinks she's on drugs & I figure she just having a VERY bad first day BACK on the job after a 3 month vaca.

To top it off
1. The guy behinds us orders a Bud light & gets a Sweetwater
2. The folks beside oder tea & gets? Yeap, a Sweetwater.
3. I get one also on the house because they obviously have too much on tap.
4. Manager tells us that the appetizer we didn't order or get will be on them as well. Told him we didn't get a appetizer & he tries to offer us desert.

DO NOT GO THERE.

Although the food was great so we left her 20%. Poor girl needs meds or something.

I've been to an Applebee's once and that was one time too many.  Sorry to hear about your debacle.

It's a joke with my friends..."who wants to go to Applebees"...crickets.

I used to go to one at least once every weekend for about 6 years when I was in high school and my first tour of duty in college.  Great fries, great beer...good times.

I haven't been there since the early 2000s...and unless they do something extremely special, I won't go back.  Things can change, since I recall when I wouldn't go to a chili's or Taco Mac, but lately both have done a good job of becoming mediocre.

A few years ago I offered to take a client in Kansas out to eat for lunch.  She suggested Applebee's, so I went.  Terrible. Now I joke about it with other clients. I am better at swaying that decision to be more mutually beneficial.

We've been 3 times before in the past to this location but she  was off da chain.
The Applebee's in Gainesville was a great place to meet singles (just ask my x wife). But I haven't been there in 15 years.

Ahh, cool.
When I worked 3rd shift,  I'd stay up 30+ hours every Friday.
Another place to avoid is The Varsity in Dawsonville. It's crappy food.

Ok...one of the funniest posts, ever

Did y'all meet each other there, did you meet someone else there, or did she meet someone else there?

Well, let me just say, I'd be home tending to our 3 year old daughter & she'd get home in time for me to go to work.... at 5 am.
We were divorced a short time later.

I have an Applebees gift card to use. Can't be that bad if I'm not having to pay for it.

I recommend you just go to the bar, drink, and socialize with single women.

The last time I went to an Applebees was during a ride weekend at Windrock about a decade ago.  I don't recall it being  bad.  I think getting good waitstaff in Dawsonville is not easy.

The problem started when you said. "let's eat at Applebee's". The one in woodstock is soo bad I don't think they will be open for long. Tracy got chicken parmesan with extra change...... there was a dime in the noodles. I mean, how does that even happen? The manager didn't even apologize! He didn't want to take it off the bill even though she refused to eat it and they never offered to make her another one. I don't think I have ever had good food at an Applebee's. Just cheap food....

I agree about the wait staff.
The food was really good. The waitress was not. We paid for 100% of our food & left the tip because most restaurants throw it all in a big pile & then divide it up.
I thi k this is stupid but I am not the manager.

Who does tip pooling?

I have never worked as a server at a place that does and we dont.

I agree. It doesn't make sense a crappy waiter gets good tips while a great waiter gets less.
My brother in law worked as a waiter years ago & had friends @ different restaurants.  I based my comment on his experience.
I think that was & still is the norm around Gainesville. This would be a great question to ask the next trip out.

Casino's still work this way...it annoys me when I tip a good servant while I know there are bad ones who get a cut.   I figure that eventually it comes around for them.

Democrats must have came up with the tipping pool. You they like the redistribution of wealth.

Sure, because a Republican would expect the price of the item to be the final price.

Correct. It is the final price. Tipping is a separate transaction and optional.  I tip 25% or more for great service. 5 or 0 and pay cash if it sucks.

In many of the countries I travel to, a tip is not understood or expected.  Why is it that in the US the servers are paid a lower rate and tips are expected? Is it to encourage servers to do a good job and let the customers determine their success or failure? Bad behavior shouldn't be rewarded because it is "expected".  Tips are not automatic if you suck.  I see tipping as the much desired and paid for customer survey and feedback platform.  Rather instant too.

I can't believe there is this much discussion about Applebee's.  What do you expect? It's a chain serving pre-prepared meals so little talent is needed   Go to a locally owned restaurant and get to know them. They are hard getting hard to find though.

What is their rate of pay? How much does the meal cost because if they are paid a higher wage, then the meal must cost more. In return CC' S fees eat more so that has to be factored in. Yes, it ends up being the same. I bet by being tipped the server would make more. Some tables run you like a personal servant for 10% or less, just because.

Server min is $2.25. If tips do not pull you up to the min wage $, then the restaurant is suppose to make up the difference. Based on a pay period.

There was some person somewhere  (not here I think) that said he doesn't tip male servers really because he doesn't feel it's an appropriate job for them or some b.s. excuse like that.

That's effed up, IMO.

I did listen to an economic podcast where the profiled a restaurant owner who moved from tip based server wagers to including the gratuity in the meal cost.  He did this since the cooks were basically getting paid the same amount they made in the 80s, while servers were making about30 times what they made in the 80s; however, raising prices to enable higher pay wasn't competitive, and while the servers were willing to share their tips with the cooks, it was illegal in their area.  To combat this situation he included gratuity in the price which enabled him to pay the cooks more, and he guaranteed the servers they would not lose any pay for the first three months.  It turned out to be pretty good overall.  The customers liked it, the cooks were happy, and servers made what they would have anyways.  The surprising thing is that servers could now take off for things that normally they would have just worked through, such as kids plays/recitals/etc, vacation, and other things that normally would have eaten into their pay.
