Title: Lake Lanier (Or as some call it “Georgia’s cursed lake”)
Post by: Danny Kinder on December 23, 2017, 10:44:06 AM
Someone brought up a mysterious death on Lake Lanier (I think in the 50’s) this morning and it seemed like everyone at the table was familiar with it or had a story of their own, especially my mother in law who was married to the owner of The Damn Store for some time. It’s pretty wild to read about all of the towns, cemeteries, buildings, etc that are still down there.

Anyways, thought I’d share this article.

Pretty cool.  That drought a few years ago revealed a lot of cool stuff, iirc.

I like the body at the office desk!

Interesting read for sure. I had a Sailing friend that used to dive in Lanier regularly with a local dive group. He said he had seen catfish as large as VW bugs and always told me he would not swim in Lanier with out a knife strapped to his leg. He said one of the main causes of drownings on Lanier was from all the fishing line adrift in the lake. I keep a safety knife on my life vest for this an similar reasons.

I enjoyed reading the part about the ghosts. I saw a ghost in Cabbage Town once. She is seen often around Cabbage Town tending to gardens and walking about. It is said she was a textile mill worker killed on the job.

That is a cool article.  I didn't realize that much stuff was down there.

Bad depiction of the accident where the two boys were killed and Paul Bennett was charged.  Yes, he struck the pontoon boat, but he had the right of way on the water.  The pontoon boat should have yielded, the pontoon boat had 13 people on it, and none of the kids had on life vests.  Not sure if the pontoon was rented or not or if the driver had extensive boating skills.  It was a tragedy and media had to completely twisted the story and made Paul out to be an evil villain.  Paul's girlfriend was my admin assistant for 5 years when I worked at CheckFree.  All this happened after I left the company.

The race track is at Laurel Park. You can see the cement seats when the lake is down.
I'm pretty sure none of the pictures were taken in Lanier. I've never seen the water that clear. Ever.

In the summer Lanier get very clear as long as there are not any storms to kick up the mud in the creeks and rivers. The south end of Lanier is always clearer than the North end.

“Clear” is a relative term for Lanier. Murky haze is its normal state.

I've heard that there are catfish the size of vw's several times. We used to have a family friend that dove near the dam. He said it's fairly easy to see down there on a clear day. Also said he has seen some monster catfish!! He described them to be that size too.

Second this month

The body of a 19-year-old Gwinnett County man was pulled from Lake Lanier on Sunday night, an official said.

The victim was identified as Stephen Frederick of Peachtree Corners, Hall County sheriff’s spokesman Stephen Wilbanks said Monday.

“At this time, foul play is not suspected,” Wilbanks said.

Emergency officials responded Sunday to the 6700 block of Bass Circle in south Hall County about 9:20 p.m., fire services spokesman Zachary Brackett said.

Responders were told of a man who had jumped off the second story of a dock and had not resurfaced, according to Brackett.

“Hall County Fire Services Marine Rescue recovered the male after approximately 60 minutes of dive operations in 19 feet of water,” Brackett said.

The sheriff’s office, which helped with the incident, will be investigating. Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources also were on the scene.

It is the second drowning this month at the lake.

The body of Jalil Poorak, 59, of Alpharetta, was recovered by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department on May 13, officials said.

If you got knocked unconscious while in the water, you would drown within 10 seconds. You will involuntary “breathe” in water and your heart will stop beating in a minute. Dying may take 3-4 minutes. It's all about how you hit the water.

Yeah, can't understand this...

“Friends of the victim stated they had swum out to the boundary of the beach area at the park and were returning to shore when the victim went into distress and under the surface of the water,” Wilson said. “Multiple bystanders attempted to assist the victim without success.”

I don't understand your point, AJ.  Are you saying radio and TV hosts are people, and they're smarter than officials (who aren't people)?  Or that non-radio and non-tv and non-officials (I.e., everyone else; people) don't listen to anyone and now 3 are dead?

Georgia DNR Law Enforcement Releases Boating Stats for Operation Dry Water and July 4th

SOCIAL CIRCLE – Earlier today, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division released the boating enforcement statistics for Operation Dry Water and for the July 4th holiday reporting period.

Operation Dry Water, a nationwide initiative of heightened enforcement targeting boating under the influence, took place June 29 - July 1. The mission of Operation Dry Water is to reduce the number of alcohol and drug-related incidents and fatalities through increased recreational boater awareness and by fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use on the water.

During the weekend, 145 Georgia Game Wardens patrolled 51 different waterways and contacted over 3,500 boaters. They issued 142 boating citations and 235 warnings, and removed 10 drunk boaters from the state’s waterways.

From July 3 - 5, Game Wardens across the state were patrolling Georgia’s waterways for the Independence Day holiday. The numbers were better this year than last year, likely due to the 4th falling on a Wednesday and the heavy afternoon thunderstorms in various parts of the state. This year the officers reported no drownings, 11 BUI arrests, eight boating incidents with four injuries and no boating fatalities. The July 4th holiday weekend in 2017 yielded one drowning, 34 BUI arrests, nine boating incidents (one involving alcohol) with five injuries, and no boating fatalities.

As the Summer boating season continues, the Division is committed to educating boaters about safe boating practices, which includes boating sober, and enforcing the state’s boating under the influence laws.

Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in recreational boating deaths, and a major contributor to accidents. Boaters are encouraged to enjoy the boating season by boating sober, wearing a life jacket, and taking a boating education course.

Visit operationdrywater.org or gadnrle.org for more information about boating under the influence.

Fisherman makes grisly discovery in Lake Lanier – van with missing man inside

HALL COUNTY, Ga. - A local fisherman says one of his worst fears was realized during a trip to Lake Lanier.

The fisherman told Channel 2's Tom Regan he discovered a minivan with the body of a man deep inside the lake.

"One of my worst fears is seeing a drowning victim or something out there," said fisherman Jason Millen.
"To come across something like that, it's crazy."

The man inside the van had been reported missing for months.

"It was pretty, pretty eerie," the fisherman said.

Millen set out on the lake Sunday, hoping to reel in a big bass. But when he was about 20 yards from shore, he spotted something shiny under the surface in a cove at the bottom of the lake.

"With my boat, and was right over the top of it, and I noticed it was a van," Millen said.
Thoughts raced through his mind; How did it get here? How long has it been submerged?

He called for help and noticed a large crack on the windshield. He thinks that happened when a boat ran over the van at some point.

"It looks like an engine or a boat motor went across it," Millen said.

Divers arrived and hooked the van to pull it out of the lake. That's when they discovered Van Dobb's body inside.

The 56-year-old man from Forsyth County had been reported missing since June.

Why his van was in the lake isn't known, but authorities said foul play is not suspected.

Millen said he believes the van was driven into the lake from a dirt road near the shore.

The minivan was found in about 15 feet of water and was covered in algae.

"Since June 5, when this man was missing, I can only imagine how hard that has been on them," Millen said.

The medical examiner said they are trying to determine the cause of the death, and could have results next week.

Its a large lake with many things that can snare an unaware swimmer. A fellow sailor told me to always swim with a safety knife because of the amount and tangles of fishing line and rope submerged in the lake. I prefer the Gulf for swimming but the lakes are so much closer. Stay safe friends.

Looks great Mike. @flashover101 is that at Old Federal?

Deepest I have swam at Lanier was 10-15 feet in Pizza Cove near Sunrise. Scrubbing the sailboat bottom.

Many areas have tree limbs just below the surface with all kinds of fishing line and rope snags. A diver friend of mine warned me to always have a knife with me on Lanier. We have safety knives on our pfds.

We are at Sawnee Campground near the dam. All lakes and especially ponds in neighborhoods have tons of snag hazards. It’s amazing the stuff we would get hung up in at the bottom.

People die on lanier every year. Its the biggest man made lake in the US and is one of my favorite places on earth. Most people die from doing something stupid. Its like the lake is the only place the government hasn't tried to stop natural selection. With that said, I dont wear a life vest on the boat, my kids did when they were young.
Jet ski is another story. Anyone that rides without a jacket kinda deserves what they get. I wipped out on a wave raider doing like 28mph one time and it was enough to knock me out. My other skis run 60 and 70 mph. So ill always have my vest on.
I have heard all kinds of stories. Ex. A chicken truck went off the road at browns bridge. 45 min later you could see catfish coming to the surface and swallowing whole chickens. Thats my favorite story.
With some common sense, the lake is so much fun.
I love lanier, ive been playing there all my life. That lake is a part of me at this point.

That lake is a part of me at this point.

while we appreciate the enthusiasm, Lanier isnt even close to the largest in the US.. It is the largest in Ga I believe

Here's a list of the man made lakes in the US. Lake Lanier is no. 35.

That's what I was always told.
But I never looked it up either
I think the acclimation comes with the amount of shoreline and depends on how far up the chestatee and chattahoochee you still consider the lake.

As dirty as people think that lake is. I know spots where you feel cleaner when you get out of the water than when you went in.
Balus creek is one of these, right around where the rope swings are.

That list also says its 158ft at its deepest point. I've read that before, but have seen 250ft of anchor rope not find the bottom.
The anchor could have been pushed off line by the current, but I wouldn't think 100+ feet

I grew up in Oakwood.....Balus Creek was one of many frequently
visited spots. My first and only time water skiing was at Balus Creek.

If you've got access to a boat, I would definitely recommend checking out Lake Jocassee in SC. It's above lake Keowee.

It's the clearest lake that I have ever been to in the southeast and there are seven waterfalls that enter into the lake that you can see by boat. Very cool summer day/weekend trip. We don't have a boat but we camped there and bummed a ride on a friend'ss boat. I have also determined that friend boats are the most enjoyable boats  [cheers]

^^This.  Having owned 5 different boats in my life, they are all more work than they are fun, assuming you like to take care of things.  Friends boats are truly the best.

Friend's boats are best, but be sure to pay for gas (not just your portion), and beer/soda.

100% agree. Ill have another boat one day, but I went to a jet ski cause I got tired of being the only one on the boat sober. Its not fun driving around a bunch of drunks. Not to mention DNR is no joke.

I have a friend in Florida that fishes off his jet ski, to me that's not enough boat.
