Title: Morris Mountain January 16-18th 2009 Discussion
Post by: Matt on December 04, 2008, 05:50:55 PM
Well,

We should have next years full schedule done by the end of December. I want to give everyone time to plan for the first ride of the season. We are waiting on the date to be confirmed but, this is the weekend. I would like for the first ride to be a big turn out, get the new season started out right. There is plenty to do here for everyone. Plan for it.

Forgot to mention that there is plenty of room for trailers and camping, for the ones that have not been.

Brian I would love to watch you do "the ugly".  That would make my day.

I'd like another whack at Morris Mountain. When we went last January it was rainy and really muddy. I think I will like it a lot better if it's dry. Here's me and Corey last year...  it was muddy

Finally, a ride on a weekend I don't have to work.  I've been missing all the rides since before summer started due to work and football season, so I'll plan on being there for this one.  Haven't been to MM but I'm assuming there will be trails suited for a smaller rig like mine.

Good sized park.
Park is split in to two halves. Right side has most of the hard stuff on it. Left side has most of the easy stuff on it. But there are a few hard trails on the easy side and a few easy trails on the hard side.

I spent about 8 hours there one day last year and had fun all day long. I have only been there when it was dry.

This is my favorite place to go pay to play.

Thanks Larry-
  It seems the the word "DRY" is key! Tellico was not really dry this past ride and not all that fun with those conditions. I am wondering if this will be a reason to go or not?

The big climb up the mountain past the mud fields is a fun one when wet, just because it's so long. I went out with just my Jeep and my co-pilot one  night and we were just gonna cruise and hit a little mud. We started up that climb, started spinning and realized we were already in it  :o  We couldn't stop. There was no where to turn around and if i wasn't on the gas, I was sliding backwards. It was probably 2 whole minutes of spinning up that climb cause it's like 200 yards or so to the top if I'm not mistaken. Very fun, and VERY scary  :D  Won't do that wet again, but it was still a very fun trip.

The climb you are talking about Will is Hammerdown. I agree with not doing it wet, there is a rock garden near the top on the right side going up. Here are a couple of links with pictures, they were both Shamrock Runs one in '07 and one in '08. The flop in '07 was a guy riding with us and it happened about 3/4 up hammer down. He was showing off the power of a 5.0 YJ and took a bad bounce. http://s428.photobucket.com/albums/qq9/mdo817gatrailrider/MM%20Shamrock%2007/

http://s428.photobucket.com/albums/qq9/mdo817gatrailrider/MM%20Shamrock%2008/

 I really want to get the XJ over there but not in the mud.

I'm probably in if there's at least a few stockers going.

Oh, and Germ, when you getting new tires?  I'm obviously in the neighborhood for at least one new tire and wouldn't mind bumping them up to something a little more aggressive ;D

There is a couple stockers going. Mines not that big, plus we will split into groups if need be. So dont worry if your stock or small tired. Plenty to do for everyone and bypasses for all obstacles.

I called Randy to inquire about making this an exclusive ride. We will need at least 10 people to commit with $10 before we can reserve it for the whole weekend. It will only cost each rig (not per person) $40 total for the whole weekend and your $10 will be deducted from that. So how many people can commit.

I can ONLY drive if I get some tires by then or I will ride passenger with some one. but no matter what I WILL BE THERE

Ditto.. on the question???

  If we only ride for one day and pay our deposit before the 5th of Jan we only have to pay 10.00 for the day we ride..  that is a total of 20.00.  Just clarifying.  It is about 7 hrs for me but, I am seriously thinkig about making the trip..  If I can take on that Friday, drive up that day, ride Saturday, drive home Sunday.  All this is depending on taking off Friday..

I don't think it's gonna be as cold as last year, but if it's anywhere close I would seriously bundle up. I was inside of a fleece bag, which was inside of my 20 degree bag and I was still a little cold. I'm gonna wear more layers to sleep this time. I'm excited about this one!

Just wondering Matt, are the co-pilots getting fed too? He's not a GATR member so he can bring his own dang food if he has to  :D

hello fellas,

I found your website some months ago and registered.  I've never met any of you, but I read your internet chatter every few days.  My name is Steve in Orlando, Fla.  I just scheduled a few days off work around the morris mountain weekend and would like to ride up and participate.

I have a moderately modified TJ and some camping and trail ride experience.  I'm a casual member of the local orlando jeep club.  I have all the required gear you list as needed, except a winch.  I would be riding and camping alone.  I'm not crazy or anything like that.

I will post in the "sign up" thread and send a deposit by paypal.  No harm done if you prefer I pick a different trail ride to introduce myself.

thanks

okay, well here's my first question.

I just followed the link to the morris mountain web page.  They have a event calender that shows when the park is reserved.  I see where it's blocked off for jan 16-18, but their calender is incorrect.  It shows those days as satuday to monday.

What are your intended days for rides?   Fri-Sun....or Sat-Mon.

thanks

Camper, looking forward to seeing you and your Jeep in person! With the MLK Jr. holiday on Monday the 19th, a few of us were planning on staying from Friday through Monday, with a few guys riding for just a day or two. It's very casual. Come ride, eat, watch and have a great time. This is an awesome group of folks. If you have any other questions just ask!

If I'm not mistaken we will ride Fri-Mon. Some get there early enough to do some riding on Friday. I'm still up in the air on my arrival. Finishing my check list at this time. New tires on the tow pig this morning, that hurt $$$. Got home and my dif covers finally came in from Solid, so I'm headed down to my shop to change them. Check torque on everything under the Heep and lets go ride.

With the exception of that night, I can usually get a cup of coffee and I'm ready to roll. I was lucky to get out to River Rock that day. It was a bad night  :P
You did make it, Mike D never showed up. {toast}

Well when you guys are coming in on Saturday morning, give me a call and I'll make sure everybody is up, bullshitted for an hour, and getting ready to ride.

fixed!

Hey, it could be better. Last January at Morris Mountain, we came in, woke them up, let them eat and get dressed for an hour, then bullshitted for an hour, and then rode.

When were you planning on doing all this?  I'd like to help and possibly look at mounting those sliders, but I can't do Saturday because we've got a show at the Masquerade again.  But any evening, assuming you can, I should be free.

Jeremy you'd better go!

For any of you who've been to this place before....

I usually throw some firewood in the jeep when I go to the local woods.  This drive is gonna be five or six hundred miles one way, so I don't think I'll want to haul wood that far.  Are there any places near the campsite to pick up a bundle or two.

Also, how far from a country store or gas is this place?  In case I wanted to run down the road for ice or aspirin...

I'm bringing a tent and a few tarps.  Do we have any tree cover to stretch a tarp to gather under if its raining?

I'm from flat florida.  Any of the easy trails go for any distance where I can just poke along and get use to elevation changes....practice with my hand throttle....pretend I'm fearless?

If I show up friday morning, do I pay the property owners my fee...or do I wait to pay your leaders for group payment?

By the way, I bring my own tools and know how to fix some things....I have spare front axles, a couple u-joints, tire plug kit and air....that kind of thing.

Just jumping in here to boost my post count....

There is a gas station within 15 min.

Me and daniel will try to bring some pallets to burn.

Plenty of long easy trails to ride. Camp ground does have some trees around.

I'm planning to bring as much firewood as I can fit in my Jeep, we have a bunch of split wood at work.
Camper, if there is a Home Depot, Lowe's, or even Kroger/Publix they generally have the bags of wood.  I would think in Anniston you would find at least one of those places.

The Morris Mountain calendar shows 16-18 as Sat-Mon, but 16-18 is actually Fri-Sun, so their calendar is wacky.

I'm hoping for all 4 days for those that can ride being a holiday weekend.  {toast}

Steve,

the camping area is an open field surrounded by trees on a couple of sides. We try to keep around the trees and if you're getting there on Friday you shouldn't have a problem getting a good spot next to some. Plenty of trails to ride around on. They are mostly "access" trails with all of the harder obstacles off to the side so you shouldn't have to worry about running up on some stuff and turning around.

Well I'm looking forward to whatever excitement I can get into.  In recent years, I've learned to hold my horses till I actually leave my driveway.  But my wife said I could go, and my boss said have fun, and I'm avoiding anyone that sneezes....

I'm probably gonna leave sometime late thursday evening and drive I-75 north.  When I would go to Helen, Dahlonega, or Chatsworth, I could usually make it to Macon by-pass and crash for an hour or two at the rest area.  Then cruise through Atlanta before traffic gets bad.  I'll probably try that this time and hit I-20 west early friday morning.  If I get there ahead of the regulars, I'll go hunt some firewood and screw around till a crowd gathers.  I won't pick a campsite till I meet some of y'all.

I changed the suspension and tires and stuff over a year ago and my jeep is in good shape and drives the highway pretty nice.  But I haven't loaded it up and driven it quite this far since then.  60 mph and I'm sure it won't be a problem.  For me, just the road trips themselves are a fun break from my middle aged life...

I asked about the soft trails because I haven't really tested my jeep on much...and it's not my nature to talk big.  The florida woods are pretty tame.  But if I learn I can follow some of you to the deep end of the pool, that's where I want to be.

Sounds good. I just got back from a round trip between LaGrange, GA and Gainsville, Florida and the time that I spent on 75 (between Tifton and Gainsville) was pretty smooth sailing.

Following Ben to the deep end is fun, if you decide to follow Larry to the deep end you better bring a life raft.

Hey Jimmy it's my Birthday weekend also, think Beth would want to pay for my weekend, just the ORV part, I'll take care of my fuel and broken parts, I already sent the deposite so if she just sends Matt another $30 that'll do it.

Shirts would be cool if we had a good supplier for a reasonable price.  Maybe even get to the point of a shirt for the rides.  You got your Morris Mountain shirts, River Rock shirts, Tellico shirts... the list goes on.  Ok... maybe not every ride, but the big ones for sure.

I'll check with a couple of printing places I know. I know one here in LaGrange does shirts for the paint shop and they are great. I'll talk to them about pricing before I go and also the printers that my school uses. I may be able to get us a deal there.

Will, check with Doug about a bag. He bought 2 for the trip last week and said he was going to return them. I think he broke the zippers though. :D I suggest going to wally world and buyin a cheap 20 bag then return it. ;) I will more than likely go. Briggs would be heart broke if we did not come down. Might come fri night if it is not too cold. Me, fine, Briggs is the issue. So answer me this... are there bypasses for the obsticles? If so I may just wheel around and not do anything dumb. :D ::)

The way the park is set up u have a main path. And all the obstacles are off to the side. This isn't to say the main path is all 2wd but it is not a hard core trail either. Now depending on your gear problem the other side of the park has a long steep hill climb to get to more trails...

Will, if a 20 degree bag isn't warm enough, boil some water over the fire right before you go to bed, pour it into a Nalgene and toss it in your bag. It fakes body heat pretty well for a while. If you are extreme, do like Bear Grills and replace boiled water with fresh urine :P

Jimmy, I use a method similar. I have a P bottle so I do not have to get up at night. Then if I need the warmth. Put it in the sack. Now what I do is take my jacket (pullover) and put it in my bag then my feet and it helps a ton since most people have cold feet while campin. Also can take rocks, wrap in foil, put by fire then put in the bag. Smaller river rocks work well. And one more thing... if you sleep in your skibbies then you are usually warmer since it lets more body heat out. But to each his own.

There are bypasses, some take 4 wheel drive like Jerm said. We all have straps(LOL), If yall got me over the Mountain, I'm sure we can get you where you need to go there. So that is a yes, we will see ya?

I bought a "20 degree" bag from Walmart last year. Nice mummy bag. At Morris Mountain last year I had a fleece bag on inside of that. It was still pretty nipply. I think I may do the rock and tin foil thing. If you guys hear a whelp followed by "son of a   !!!!!!" then you know what it is  ;)

You gotta watch out about putting wet rocks in a fire.  Sometimes they explode....steam is a powerful force.

I've put hot water in the nalgeen, but it still gets cold before long.  I've pissed in a bottle too, but then I don't want to use the bottle anymore... :D.  I had good results with the therma patches from walgreens.  Peel em and stick em to your t-shirt.  They get pretty hot, so better to keep something between your skin and the patch.  They last a while....don't take up much room in a pack.

The main thing is to get your body off the ground and keep your head warm.  I have a therma rest air matress for backpacking and a walmart air matress for car camping....I kind of hope it's gonna be cold.

I was planning to have options.  I'll drive interstate with my full doors and soft top.  I have some canvas half doors I'll swap out when I get to the site.  I also have a bikini top I might roll up and bring in the jeep.

...and yes, those predicted temperatures are pretty cold for my florida blood.  I'm gonna find some firewood and bring as much as I can fit.  I've camped below freezing a few times before but I've forgotten how I felt about it... ;D

I'm not going to bail out though...it sounds like it could be a campout to remember...{toast}

I was getting a weird vibe from the left rear so I put my spare on and it drives smooth now. I either have a slightly bent rim or out-of-round tire. I just haven't gotten around to figuring out which.

As I understand it we are meeting for Sat ride at 9am Alaloser time
which is 10am Ga time.

Not too much. I mean we've got plenty at the house (No central heating, that's how we heat the place) SO we can bring as much as we think we need. You don't have to pack around it. I'll throw some in the Jeep if I need to. I wasn't just gonna pack out the bed of your truck if that's how it came out  {;-(}

It's funny, this weekend we had a show and our gear is at our bassist's house where we practice and I was pulling a trailer to haul it down to Atlanta and his back yard was NASTY... it looks like I went wheeling a little bit.  I thought to myself "that looks vaguely familiar."

Well, I just wasted an hour of my employer's time on youtube searching "morrismountain".  I think I'm in over my head... :o.  I may  be spending a lot of time at the bottom of the hill.

Accuweather.com says low 20's at night....mid 40's to 50 in the day.  Lord help the fella that has to turn wrenches in a trail side repair.  Probably won't need to make a saturday run for ice.

I'm still in.  I forgot about picking up an hour at the alabama state line.  I may end up arriving pretty early friday morning.  I just don't know quite what to expect.  I need to see a place like this to learn what I need to further my jeep capabilities.  Also, I can camp this kind of weather and find some fun in it, but I wouldn't blame anybody for having second thoughts.

(edit to make clear...Some of the youtube stuff I was watching was more than I can do. But I'm looking forward to this weekend.  I spent a bunch of time and money to get to this point with this darn "car hobby".   If I knew some of you better, I could tell you about how people I love kept needing my jeep weekends the past couple years.  I've been waiting for a trail ride/campout like this.)

Steve, you will be suprised at how much trail is there that a stock jeep could do. Much less what a rig like yours can do. There is bypass for everything. Most videos are of a small portion of obstacles that are INSANE. I wont be doing those my self.

It will be cold, no doubt about it. But if its dry we cant ask for much more :) I think a few guys are going to arrive early on Friday. Get set up, check the place out, people will start showing up before you know it. I am just mad I wont get there in time to ride Friday.

I am trusting MATT, DOUG, ADAM  and I almost said BEN not to steer me wrong...  hahahah..  These guys won't steer you wrong ...  I HOPE ...  Any ways,  as long as there are by passes we will be okay.  I have to drive mine home 400 miles like you.  Don't ever be scared to say no, maybe, strap, or winch..  It will be fun...    {letseat} {popcorn}

Not to be mr follow the rules but you might want to check on the night ride thing. I know at one time it was not allowed because of the surrounding residential properties and the noise/lights of the 4x4's.

well, I need another post here to build up my total count.

The morris mountain web page says primitive camping.  That's fine, what ever that entails.  Are there any water spigots, or electrical outlets, or picnic tables, or rusty grills, or pole dancers?  Or is it just a dedicated spot on the property to park and pitch a tent.

Do we few who are brave enough to camp share a common fire pit and circle the wagons?  None of this is really important, but I was just wondering.

I picked up a load of hardwood and I just wondered what else I might want to cram into the back of my jeep for this party.  I don't think the beer can get colder in a cooler of ice than it will be just sitting on the ground...Make sure you have a good battery in your vehicle.  I carry cables if we need them.

We definitely share a pit. So we can tell lies around it. If there is no grille I will be bringing one, cause me and Adam are going to be frying you guys a burger on Sat. I am not quite sure about water and electric. I didnt camp there last time, I went.

There are bathrooms and water there. I can't remember if there are showers (I never used them if there are  :D) but I'm fairly certain there are showers there.

There is electricity, but someone will have to clarify on that situation because I never used that either. Livingston hooked his trailer up to it last year, though. Maybe he can chime in on that. I do remember a few extension cords  ::)

Hanging out and goofing off around one big fire after dinner is th best part of the trip!  {toast}

Thanks for bringing fire wood! And if anybody else can get there hands on some, please bring it  :)

Officially there is no water and elect. Last time I tapped into an outlet over by the carport area at the edge of the camping field. There's water there also. I can't remember how many circuits they had for the electricity. We kept popping the breaker last year with my camper and tent heaters hooked up.

Is that the guy who flipped his buggy and lost his arm last week at WITC? Peck I think his name is?

Didn't hear about that one. You got a link? Was it on pirate? That would suck bad.

How muddy is it going to be?

if it stays dry (no rain around anniston) this should be decent. Not super dusty because of the rain last week and MM doesn't seem to dry out super quick but it shouldn't be so muddy it cakes up the tires. So far the 10 day for Anniston just shows cold and sunny, no rain.

So I woke up this morning to an email from one of the girls that I was going camping with. "Hey, can we go some other weekend since it is going to be so cold?!" pansy. If she doesn't go, the other Jeep won't be there which kills most of my off road fun.  So I figure I'll come pester you guys over here some more.

{peek} Ok because I'm a wuss...  Since, I still don't have rocker guards, I'm still nervous about the whole body damage thing.  It was said that a stock JK can handle enough there to have fun?  I wouldn't mind doing the stuff that I can handle and watch the big boys playing on the bigger stuff from the bypasses.  Who else is going close to stock so I don't feel like too much of a puss.  I know of Jerm, but only on Sat... I'd be at all of it.  Mind, this all hinges on the girls actually wussing out.

Kyle, Rowingfish87, is in a pretty much stock TJ on 31s. And there are plenty of smaller guys that don't wanna mess up their stuff either. You will be fine. If you wanna try some hard stuff just let us know and we'll spot for you, but no body is gonna make you try anything.  {toast}

Glad to hear you're coming!

I'm driving a JK so that kind of throws a wrench in the works because of the bolt pattern.  Thanks for the offer though.  {toast}  I'll just steal Jerm's spare.  Shouldn't need to since they should be in today or tomorrow at the latest.  Come Sunday evening I thought to myself 'Oh, Morris Mountain is THIS weekend...****' and 255/75/17 isn't exactly the most widely carried tire size in the world...

If anybody has any questions while we're there, about anything, don't hesitate to ask. We go to these places to learn and have a great time. For instance, everybody is gonna need to air down their tires a little before we hit the trails. That gives you more traction. Myself and others will gladly show anybody how to do that. And there are bypasses for everything, so if there is something that looks a little nasty that some of the guys are trying, and you don't wanna try it, you don't have to.

While we're on the trails if there's any questions about techniques or equipment that someone is using, ask us  {toast}  That's the best way to become more knowledgeable about this stuff, and plus, most of the guys like talking about their rigs anyways  ;D

This is gonna be a great weekend guys! You can't ask for much more than dry ground when you're wheeling at this place. I can't wait! Just 2 more days til Friday  {letseat}

I have to work tomorrow (thursday, normal day) and then I'm off until Tuesday.  I plan to leave later in the evening and take my time.  I just read it's supposed to be 10 degrees before daylight friday.  I might be sitting in a waffle house for a while.

The last few nights, I've been pulling gear out and building a pile in the garage.  Usually when I've loaded up to run up to the local forest, all I need is my tool bag and a small cooler.  The woods here are just soft sand and the chances of snapping an axle or contol arm bracket are not great.  And if I were to have any serious trouble, I have friends only an hour away.  I swap my doors here at home and just run the canvas half doors.  If I camp, I often just string a tarp and camp minimal.  I took my rear seat out not long after I purchased the jeep, so I don't have any problems with the few things I like to take with me.

This trip is a little different.  I planned on trying to bird dog some firewood after I arrive in Alabama, but I'm betting since it's so cold, everybody up there will be looking for wood.  So I bought a good size load of oak and hickory here in town.  If I see someone selling split wood up there, I might get some more.  But at least now I know I can get a fire going friday while I wait for the headliners to show up.   And since this is a lot farther away, I'm going to leave my full doors on for the interstate and swap them when I get to the site.  And since the trail rides appear to be a little tougher....and because it's gonna be colder that an polar bear's ass, I have all this stuff piled up in the garage that I think I "might" like to have with me.  I don't think I can get it all in the jeep.... :P

I'm putting the beer and the fire wood in first, and then whatever else fits is what I'm bringing.

Good to pack important things first! As for the rest. Bring what you want but with all of us we will have whatever is missing! We come pretty prepared! Oh, does Morris Mountain have places to pull off the sides of the trails?  I'm going to try and bring the old video camera since I don't have any video of my Jeep and I might as well just record everything. lol

Let's update the list in check in with arrival and departure times. I have to wait for a part to arrive UPS tomorrow before I leave. If it arrives early, I'm gonna throw it on before I leave. If not, I'll bring it with me for a field project. It will prolly take about an hour to install. I don't want to leave here later than 1:00, so if it ain't here yet, too bad.

For you guys arriving before me. Try to set up camp within 100 feet or so of the pavilion and save me a somewhat level spot for my campa please.  {toast}

Estimated Arrival --- Friday 4:00 PM
Departure ---         Sunday night

this is a chatty group...425 posts in this topic so far.  I'm looking forward to this event.  I don't think I've ever played outdoors when it's 15 degrees.  Every one at work says this show won't go on.  I'm really kind of surprised myself that most or all of you haven't pulled out.  I know you aren't moving forward just because fellas like me want to attend, but if it matters....I'll take my chances and if we all feel it's too cold to survive, no harm done.  I sound brave while I'm here in my warm office.

I'll have a fire going long before dark friday.  I think I have enough wood to last the first night, but the fire will have to be pretty big to make a dent in the temperature around the fire ring.  Depends on any wind or not.  I might have a beer or two before anyone gets there.

I haven't gotten to adding a winch yet.  I want a winch bumper and a few other things first.  I own a hi-lift jack, but it takes up a lot of room in the jeep.  I never needed it on the orlando club rides, so I started leaving it at home.  I also carry a good bottle jack for changing tires, etc.  Do I need to have my own hi-lift on the trail with you guys?  Do they get used much on these kind of trails?  I could leave it home otherwise.  I'll get it in the jeep if you prefer I have my own this weekend.

Plenty of people will have a high lift if needed. That's the beauty of riding with a good group. Chances are that if you need something, five other people will have what you need.

Don't sweat the cold. Just make sure you have plenty of warm clothes and blankets. The fire can always get bigger. You just need to make sure you will be warm sleeping or you won't sleep much. Wind and rain would make it much worse.

folks can say what they want about the cold but I say keep your feet and hands warm and you are ok. Your body will keep the core warm and sacrafice the limbs for it. Don't get your clothes wet since water tends to kill the insulation of most clothes.

I'll be study study study tonight boys. I got A lot of school work to cover first. I need to be there to see how bad Daniel gets stuck this trip

Thanks for the tip Ben, I'm gonna pick up some of those hand and foot warmers.

Camper, I have a high lift on my tire carrier that anyone is more than welcome to use when needed. Leave yours at home if it's killing your packing. Throw some extra blankets in there instead  ;)

And someone mentioned pulling to the side of the trail; there will be a lot of stop and go, but still enough riding to see the whole place. There will be plenty of opportunities to grab the video camera and watch some of the big guys do some crazy crawling.

Can't wait guys!  :)

My wife is/was generally that way too.  She hauled her own pack up the AT approach trail from amicalola falls park to the plaque on springer mountain, multi-day hikes in shining rock wilderness, cohutta wilderness, 4 days rim to rim in the grand canyon, and other hikes.  She had fun with the jeep liberty in Moab.  But she's not been much fun lately with the TJ and the money I want to spend.

I didn't invite her to this weekend's showdown....in case I need to rent a u-haul and pull the jeep home... ;D

I can't speak for everyone but I get up early every day so I'm sure I'll be up Sat AM when you get there.

Does anyone have a big bottle/can of Coleman fuel?  I just remembered when I was going through my stuff that we inherited this old school Coleman heater.  I was just at Dick's and could've gotten some but didn't think about it and I don't know if I'll be able to get out again tonight.  If anyone has some they want to bring, please do.  I have no idea how much heat the thing puts out but I'm sure we'll take all we can get.

Guess I got no reason not to be there now. So see you there at 10 a.m. GA time to wheel and head back to GA at or before 4 p.m. (GA time).

Ben said it perfect, over pack! Packing to much is fine, not packing enough when it gets into the teens at night SUCKS. I will be bringing enough stuff to stay the night. Never know what might happen and better to be ready.

Arriving ~8pm Friday
Departing ~10am Sunday

I've still yet to install my hockey-puck-bumpstops, so I might have to find a place to flex/measure/bumpstop when I get there and let em set over night.   ;)

about to head out.....I've got around 25 paper plates, a couple of big trash bags, and some paper towels.  I plan to fill up close to MM and I'm gonna grab a couple of bags of chips for Sat night.

Apparently they weren't joking about the forecast, it's freakin' cold!  See y'all there....

Yeah man.. it's gonna be cold!  I know it was cold yesterday at like 6:00 changing my oil and brakes, and the sun was still out a bit.  The wind really isn't helping, but... it's gonna be good.  Big enough fire, heaters in the rigs.. should be fun.

Are we still planning on meeting at MU?  'Cause I get off at 3, so it'll take me a minute to back track to Lawrenceville from Norcross.  It shouldn't be long though I think I can make it to Sugarloaf in like 15-20 minutes and should be there shortly.

Ok, do we need to look at splitting the group for sat ride? We have a real good mix of built and stocker rigs along this time. Does not matter to me if we are in a long line if there are enough bypasses that we can all make. Just a thought. ;) I would hate to spend the day tugging and waiting. Alot of us are in for a day ride only so I am sure we all want to see everything we can. 24 rigs on count so far!!!! Great!!!!

Seriously though I am sure we can but most of the day we will probably be fine in one group and we can split where needed.

we should be fine in one group. There might be some standing around but that is part of watching. Most of it has a dedicated trail and then the "spider trails" are the obstacles. And dont hate on us stocker guys  {nln}

lol, Steph is going to love me for this.  Every time I think about what time I need to leave I move it up 15-20 minutes.  She has her friend's 21st Birthday party to go to tonight. She's not gonna be a happy camper when I wake her up at 630-7.  ;D

Well, this trip was great. We had some ups and some downs, but overall this was just an awesome ride. Glad all the new people made it out. Hope everyone had a good time, stayed warm enough (I didnt) and enjoyed the food. Calvin & Lizzy won the raffle. Hard to get everyone together for that. I didnt get as many pictures as I should have.

My jeep sucks until I get tires, that all I got to say there.

BTW everybody that showed this weekend should have a new trail badge under there profile. Lets see who gets all 12 for 2009  ;)

Also if anyoned picked up a Vegum hockey puck around the rock garden it belongs to me!

The Amp buggy belongs to Brian. We had three new members in buggies too, they were all super nice rigs.

I had to leave early on Saturday and get back for my sister's pageant. I just got in and it's midnight. Had an awesome time as always guys! except Friday night.... my lord it was cold!!! The mud sucked, but after the whole Jeep is coated you can kind of have fun in it. At least we got plenty of stuck of the month candidate pics  {letseat}

I love 35s  ;D  My 8.8 didn't hang up once.

Hey Matt, did they rear driveshaft give you any vibs?

Another great ride guys. Let's keep 'em coming! But we can ditch thta whole 12 degree thing at Morris Mountain.  :o

One more thing guys, Kyle's dog, Razz, was hit and killed by a truck on Henry Davis Road that runs mext to the park on Friday night. We burried her there that night. Kyle took it like a champ, but I know that he really loved that dog.

Kyle, I'm sorry man. Let us know if there's anything we can do. And for the rest of GATR, this guy is gonna need a new tire since he shlashed a sidewall today. He has 31x10.5x15 Maxxis Buckshots. So be on the lookout, or for any good deals on tires. I'm sure he's gonna be looking for some soon.

OUCH! Seth with the Hummer was also stuck while all this happened I think. I am suprised but I remember everybodys names out there. I guess I am a loser!

Any rate. I am kinda disappointed in the jeep and not getting much pictures. No noticeable vibes from the driveshaft, but the muffler rattle is pretty annoying. I got to get some tires in a bad way.

No serious damage on my rig other than slashing a tire on destabilizer right b4 heading home. >:( >:( and of course it was the newer tire I just replaced from tellico a few months back! Dang it! It was interesting having a 10.50 and a 12.50 rear tire on the way home. Swayed a bit. :D I have pics but no freakin cord. My wife has the other camera with her so once she is home I will swap cards over and post. Did anybody get pics of me doing the good, bad or ugly?? Oh yeah, Will... your trail leading privelages have been revoked! Man, what a cluster F!!! We found some great trails on the GOOD side of the mountain late in the day. Lots of great rocky climbs! x2. Before long if you dont have 37's you wont be going to the other side on park. They have gotten a lot worse since the first time I went there. I think they just pushed dirt over the area to "fix it". I remember there use to be tires in the ground that you could see clearly at the second crossing (not the bridge one) but now the only part I could see of any of the tires was a little bit of sidewall in one of the ruts.

This is steve safe at home.  Left the park about dark when it looked like it was going to sleet/rain....and most everyone had left or were about to.  It rained lightly off and on from the time I left till I got to florida.  It never amounted to anything except make the road slick.  Drove all the way to first florida rest stop, closed my eyes for about two hours, got home about 7:30 am.

I dumped all my gear in the garage and started hosing the mud off.  I carried home a lot of orange alabama mud underneath.  I have a slightly bent tie rod.  It's a ZJ solid bar rod and I can probably straighten it.  I didn't notice it driving, so it's not bad.  That's my only damage.  I didn't wash the jeep or clean up the inside or put the camping gear away....I'm gonna take a long nap.

I had a great time.  Thanks again for allowing me to join y'all.  I had a camera but I never got around to taking pictures.  That's a little unusual for me, but I was having fun and got lazy about pictures.  I had expected another day of rides, but I'm not surprised that we wrapped up when the weather started to change.  I wouldn't have wanted to pack up wet anyway.  And I didn't mind missing another cold night in the tent.  The experience was what I was after and I have some better idea of what's next for my jeep.

Everyone was new to me, and it was too much to remember everyone's name the first go around.  Thanks to Sam and Mike L for getting me started friday.  I spent some time with a few more and spoke to others when we were killing time.  Everyone was friendly, I was able to drive home with no damage, only got stuck twice....so it was worth going.

Still can't believe you got over that stuff! How much mud is shoved into that belly skid? ;D

not real sure! I will have to get under there soon to look for any damage. I as usual bumped and bounced around most of the day on the skids. I have to admit it has been fun seeing what a jeep can do stock and I have been surprised more than once by it.

Then MikeL let me drive his Jeep back through the mud pit area and there was no comparison. Where I had to gas it, rear locked and bumped and bounced around his Jeep cruised right through, little gas, unlocked and was like a Cadillac going over the bumps. Very jealous of his Jeep and the work he has put into it.

I think we decided that due to the dealers already crappy warranty coverage that if he drove it home and did more damage they could attempt to say damage was caused by him driving home or something else stupid. That and no spare parts for the JK around...

Man I am surprised they are covering it anyways! On the JK forum websites people get turned down all day on warranties due to lifts, tires, being OFF ROAD (yes a jeep gets turned down for being off road....)

Well I spent about 15 minutes worth of quarters and got it most of the way clean. Sprayed the body off, got the suspension and wheels cleaned and all the dirt under the flares and around the axle area. I would need a lot of quarters to ever get all the mud of the skids and frame...

Speaking of quarter car washes, are there any inside the perimeter/near downtown or around Tucker 285/Lavista?  I found one on Google maps off of Gresham road and I20, I pulled up there last night with a pocket full of quarters but had to do a drive by.  I'm pretty sure someone would have tried to car jack me within 2 minutes had I stopped there.  I didn't want to have to show them how I roll with my daughter in the car!

If anyone knows of one near Grant Park, downtown, Little 5, Highlands, that would be great.

Cool.  I think I found another one.  My sister says there is one on the corner of Memorial and Maynard terrace.  It's probably only marginally safer than the first one I found though.

Holly Crap, you're lucky Glen. You would not want lose you track bar mount like that on the road. It must have just barely made it home. Looks like it broke where the factory welds attach it to the axle. Were you giving it hell out there or what? Now would be a good time to get the Poly Performance high steer. Just have that one welded back on and install the Poly Track bar relocation bracket around it. I reinforces the weak factory mounts.
