Matt, how much of this ride is asphalt? Just wondering since its nearly 75 miles.
-
Maybe 50/50. Alot of dirt road.
-
Was this area affected by the recent tornadoes?
-
Dont know. If it is we will drive over it. :D
I have a graduation to attend that day, so we should be road & fed by 3:00 - 4:00pm
-
As of right now most of these roads are impassible. Tornado really tore this area up. This is tray mtn.

So, just checking... Is this still a go? Has someone run this since the storm to find out the trail conditions?
-
Still a go. It is only the 6th of May so by the time this happens, the roads should be cleared.
-
Should someone pack a saw?
-
Still a go, I have to attend a wedding in Helen, Saturday. So I plan to scope them out.
-
Hey so im just wondering... I'm thinking of trying to bring my son on this ride.. he's gonna be 8 months by the time of the ride and has good control of his head and neck... would it be a good idea to make this his first off road ride in the jeep...
-
Forest roads oughta be alright. Stuff a pillow around his head. my .02

I would think of all the off road places this would probably be the best first one for him. I don't have kids, so I don't know to much about the head/neck at 8 months but it will still be bumpy.
-
I took my daughter all over river rock last year, she was about the same age. She did fine, this ride is about 50/50 gravel and asphalt. No obstacles. This will be a nice ride in the mountains, followed up with some food and fellowship.
-
Sounds good everyone... Im really looking foward to this ride now. {toast}
-
My son came to Gulches a couple months back. He was 13 months at the time. The bumps on the perimeter road put him to sleep! I bet your son will be fine on this trip...
-
I started my boy off a 2yrs old at Tellico. He was out by lunch. ;)
-
Matt...you gonna bring C.O.R.E. members' swag with u on this ride? I wanna show off the club, but have no windshield banner!
Thanks!
-
Sounds like a 2wd could do the run as discribed....! {ehm}

Yep. It will be available at the ride.
-
This will be my 1st ride with my Jeep. Went to Beasley Knob with a friend last year and had a pretty good time. This sounds like it'll be a pretty easy ride. Something to get my feet wet at least.
Hopefully my CORE gear will arrive soon...
-
Hmmm might be out for this... love it how stuff comes up last minute ::)
-
FYI, we have picnic shelter #3 reserved at Unicoi State Park for this ride. Just in case you just want to swing by for lunch. This is where we will end the ride & eat. Probably be back here around 1:00pm. This is a covered shelter. So we can grille, rain or shine.
Maybe a good idea if someone wants to bring a chainsaw just in case.
-
I'm in the middle of doing a bunch of work on the Jeep, it's not ready yet... I'll be passing on this trip.
-
Matt, are you thinking you will be at the shelter at 1 or back home at 1? Might swing up with the kids to meet you guys.
-
I think we should be at the shelter by 1. If you wanna head up and get the coals hot for us let me know.
-
Trying. I can't promise anything but we will see.
-
We were hoping to make this one--wasn't sure so we didn't sign up, and it looks like we'll be house-hunting instead. Bittersweet.
-
Sorry guys. I have to back out on this one. Have fun. I hope to be on another ride soon.
-
I am back in it... not sure on the wife yet. {toast}
-
Great. I am taking the top and doors off tonight. Loading the cooler, packing the food in the morning and heading out. Looks like some great weather. Hopefully the trails are clear, anyone bringing a saw just in case?
-
I got my hatchet and folding saw that I always carry. Wont do much for whole trees though. When is the last time it rained up that way? No front flares means mud ends up inside the jeep with no doors or windows.
-
Its dry up here but from what ive heard, there is hundreds of downed trees on the tray mtn leg of the trip. The popcorn and hightower rds are in good shape.

Thanks, we will modify the map some. U coming?
-
Will there be a place for some of us to take our top & doors off & store them till we get done? Dont wanna take mine off till I get here. Night air is chilly at 6 in the morning!
-
I dont know of a safe place. We have the pavilion #3 rented, but whose to stop some one from stealing them.
Also, I am not sure if Unicoi charges to get in to the park, probably safe to keep $5 on you just in case.
I am thinking of Chatahoochee River Rd as an alternative to tray mountain, anyone know its condition?

I mite be able to get loose for a few hrs. I will prolly just do the hightower portion and then cut the scene. Busy day.

Had a great day. Thank you to everyone that showed up. Weather was perfect, I hate it if you missed the opportunity to drop the top, remove the doors, and attend this ride.
{toast} {toast} Here's to some good people, good food and good views. {toast} {toast}

Had a great time. It has been too long since I have made a ride. {toast}
After everyone left Meg and I wanted more so we went back up 17 a short way and turned right onto what I believe was Tray Mountain (well turned into tray). We went all the way up it, stayed right at a split, ended at a big intersection, took a left, came back out on 17 later on higher up and then went south back into Helen. There were tons of trees down, but cleared. I don't think we missed much, didnt even see a need for 4x4 the whole time. I liked that whoever did the tree clearing dragged some of the big trees over the entrance to user created trails.
-
Nice pics, glad we didn't miss anything
-
looks like a good trip. I was putting together a playset (big wooden beast) all day :P
-
Here are the pics I took...unfortunately I did not get a picture of the faces of the fishermen as we crossed the river upstream from them. Priceless!
Had a fun time...awesome weather and good people!

Fun day yesterday, guys/gals. Weather really was ideal, and that stretch of trail along the river was perfect.

what is ****CORE****?
CORE is our member group. You are invited to join. Like any club, there are rules and a membership fee, but it's only about 10 cents a day, or about $3 a month, and all goes back to the club, as we are a non-profit.
CORE could stand for a lot of things that sound good, like "Crawlin over Rocks Everywhere", but it's really the heart, or the CORE of GATR. CORE guys love the sport, the trail, and make time to ride.
CORE members have a CORE area on the forum where we plan our trips, our camping, our time around the campfire, etc.
There is an entire list in the "What is CORE" thread here:

We have a great group of guys and the number of CORE members keeps growing every week. GATRFEST is going to be awesome this year. Join us!
