I bought a new beverage cooler for the jeep today. I went with the igloo Yukon 20. It's a bit smaller than the Pelican 35 and has many of the great features I wanted. I'm hoping I can carry my co2 setup on the trail now...I'll know soon. It was $100 at Sam's Club.
I also ordered a Bestop safari/bikini top so I can have some cover without fretting about damaging my real top.

My pelican in the jeep is a 20. Perfect size. Main reason i got is i can tie it down and dtill open it. It was almost twice that cost. If the igloo can do that then awesome.

Same one, in white at Sam's, but 99 bucks. They've had them for months at that price. You can strap it down. I like the drain better than on my pelican. The center of the plastic handle is sticky rubber, not hard plastic. I think it has a 5 year warranty, versus lifetime with pelican.

Does the cooler have a metal handle or a plastic one? The one I found at sam's had a plastic handle and no mention of a warranty. Just wonder if that's where the money difference is. I think I would rather have a metal handle but not for an extra $100.
-
Correction: maybe the one I got isn't the same as the Amazon one. I'll take pictures of it today and post them up. Sorry..I made an assumption.

I'm going to test the two leak complaints: drain plug, and tip over. On my to-do list for to-day

The difference is one is sportsman and one is a Yukon same cooler in appearance but I think the handle is what makes it different they are 219 at lowes

Ok, test complete, plus a ton of pictures now. My drain plug did not leak, but without any doubt the top will leak if turned over. I'd be surprised if it held ice super long since the main part of the walls are only about 1". The handle is held in with one bolt on each side. The top has a nice feature where it has a position the would resist wind blowing it closed since it takes a bit of force to overcome the indent when nearly fully open.

I'm going to keep it. The water leaking out the top doesn't concern me for my application. I never tested the Pelican for that, so it may leak too...IDK.
- Torg
-
The Pelican 20 does not have a drain plug. Wish I thought about that when I bought, it's the only thing I don't like about it so far.

will you test the lid leaking? I filled mine almost to the top, closed to lid with the pull down things, and then laid it on its side (I tried both sides since the gasket union was closer to one side than the other, but I don't think that's where it leaked.)

Haha so dirty but love the trail talk.
-
Well I needed to pull it out of the Jeep and wipe it down anyway. I missed the discussion on leaks but here goes.
It definitely drips out the back. The ends of the gasket leave a small gap and water drips out when laid on it's back.

I'm sure this could easily be remedied with a little silicone. Not an issue for me as there is very little chance of it tipping over. If it did I have bigger problems like the Jeep not being on all 4's.

Thanks for doing that test. Does it only leak when tilted on the back?
It would be interesting to see the results of a Yeti for the same test.
I should do one more test with my igloo where I release the drain with the lid closed and see if it affects the flow rate. I know my Pelican will drain much slower if the lid is closed.

Clark leave cooler discussion here as part of your build or split it out?
-
Eric has a bunch of friends at the lake today and my yeti 35 is among the coolers. I tested it and there is a small drip from the very back center, similar to what Mark saw on his Pelican.
-
Clark
It did not leak out the sides or front. If I had it full I'm sure it would have leaked out the back while on it's side.
I pulled my Pelican 35 out to look at it and it has the same small gap in the gasket. Wonder if it's intentional so it's not completely air tight for some reason since John's Yeti does the same thing. Maybe to prevent a vacuum lock on the lid or something?
-

if you can merge it with the original cooler discussion thread (http://www.gatrailriders.com/GTRForums/index.php?topic=14943.0
My first Yeti cooler) That would probably be best. Good info that shouldn't be trapped in a build thread.

Ok, the leak on mine was much more significant that just a little water getting through the seam where the gasket material ends meet.

that drain spout is pretty nifty, but since ice floats, probably not a big deal since you should keep some water in there to maintain the thermal mass. Otherwise, it doesn't appear to be better than the igloo one at Sam's.

I'm not sold on the solid handle, in a vehicle where it's likely to get jostled around and could take some tough hits. The gasket has to be better...no way it could be worse!

Just bought this cooler for the Jeep... wanted to go with Yeti, Pelican or even RTIC, but this one has great reviews and I got it for $42.50!
Its got slots for running straps through that don't interfere with the lid opening, nice gasket in the lid, stainless steel hardware to keep it closed... seems pretty good.

Nice. That's all I need, enough for the day. I'm sure if you cooled it and all the contents before hand it would last longer. That's how the other cooler tests are done as best in an tell.

Yeah, I not sure if I pre chilled mine. But as long as it gets me thru a day I'm good. Plenty big enough for lots of drinks and food. It even comes with a small tray that hangs on the top lip of the cooler to keep things out of the water.
-
Got this for Christmas. K2 is the brand. It works pretty well for day on the trail. We sell the Yukon coolers too. They are awesome for the money
-
I've got a small grizzly and a yeti 65. The yeti definitely keeps ice noticeably longer, but I haven't done a controlled test. Also, haven't tested the spill test, but will try to get around to it soon. The grizzly is a perfect size for the jeep, yeti better for camp

I just took this picture of my Pelican 20 Tues 9:40 pm. I packed it with drinks and lunch early Sat morning. Unpacked what was left Monday afternoon and the drinks were super cold. Granted its not been that hot but my goal is for both coolers is that they last all weekend.

I'm starting to lean to the soft cooler for in the jeep for flex on where to put it. Anyone using the Yeti Hopper 20? Curious if it is waterproof (they claim so, but interested in practical experience).
-
Has anyone seen the "newish" Ozark Trail 26, 52, or 73's in person? I'm considering getting the 26 quart for the Jeep. I have some concern that the popular 20 quart sizes are not quite going to be big enough and this seems like a good candidate. Below is a good discussion on their performance and a few tests.

It looks pretty good...and I love the double drain on the one on that review. Here is a video of the 26: https://youtu.be/ll87-5e3ybk (https://youtu.be/ll87-5e3ybk)
The 26 doesn't appear to have a drain...which would bother me, but if you're cool with it, then it seems fine.

I found this one in my parents crawl space/ basement.
I pulled the cooler from the attic, put the drinks in Saturday morning & 15 lbs of ice. Packed it for back up drinks at my kids party. It sat in a hot car until almost dark. I brought it inside the house, opened it up, got a drink, & left the lid unlatched. Been open since.
Not bad for 3.5 days. Especially hot car & being left open.

Cooler update:
I decided to bring the orca out for the Moab trip because it was a good size for this trip. I loaded it on Wednesday, May 25th with a block of ice (frozen half gallon), ice from my freezer and 8 frozen pork tenderloins. It stayed primarily in the jeep. It kept ice until Sunday, May 29th and was still very cold. I was in and out of it quite a bit taking out water bottles and adding new bottles. I added ice on Monday (half bag), then a full bag on Wednesday. I literally never took the cooler out of the jeep. I used a makeshift cup to empty some of the water because it was getting pretty full. Yesterday afternoon,June 4th, it still had a few pieces of ice.
All in all, I am extremely impressed with this cooler. The only negative was that the rubber latches seemed to come loose occasionally at first, but I was cognizant of it. After a few days it seemed to not have any issues. The seal stayed tight and never leaked water during riding, but I didn't turn it over intentionally to test it. Don was running the same one, curious to hear his input. I know the big block of ice made a great impact. I also noticed, on the last day unfortunately, that the gas station had blocks of ice on the side.

I don't have the Yeti, but I do have a soft sided cooler similar and it works and keeps things cool enough for us and our drinks etc. I don't need a cooler to keep drinks cold for 5 days. It usually only needs to keep them cool for the day. Multi day trips typically I have an igloo at the tent or cabin/beach house.I like the soft sided ones because you can cram them into places where a hard box won't fit.I do like that fact though that you can strap a hard sided cooler down and it shouldn't move. I have checked into the Rtic soft sided and they seem comparable to the Yeti.

I don't know anything about the cooler's but, I can vouch for the rtic ss cups, like the one Clark has. I watched him make hot coffee and put it in the rtic cup and then put it into the freezer. He pulled the cup out of the freezer 6 hours later and the coffee was not frozen and according to Clark, the coffee still wasn't cold enough.
If the cooler is anything like that cup, its bad ass.

Our elite cooler tested units that all fall under the same category. We requested that companies supply a 40-quart cooler size (or as close to it as possible) for an apples-to-apples comparison. All are certified Grizzly Bear-proof by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (there really is such a thing!), lockable, durable, and fit into the extreme outdoor-use category.
ICE RETENTION TEST Coolers were chilled overnight with 10 pounds of sacrificial ice and then emptied. For the test, they were loaded with 20 pounds of ice with drinks filling the remaining space. Ambient temperature for the testing was about 70 degrees, and they were all opened twice per day for the duration of the test to check for melt. Keep in mind the warmer outside air enters and melts ice.
It took 3 days before we started seeing some separation in performance. After 5 1/2 days, the Esky 55 and the Grizzly G40 had no ice remaining. After 6 days Yeti’s Tundra 45 had no ice remaining. After 6 1/2 days, the Pelican Elite 45 and Orca 40 had no ice remaining. The Pelican slightly edged out the Orca. At the end, only the Canyon Coolers’ Outfitter 35 met the full 7-day mark successfully. We had a winner, and it wasn’t a cooler you see immediately walking into your local sportsman’s warehouse. But let’s not forget, this is the #ExtremeOutdoorCoolerShootout and we’re crowning a champion!
First Place: Canyon Coolers Outfitter 35
Second Place: Grizzly Coolers G40 & Pelican Elite 45 Qt Cooler
Third Place: Orca Coolers Wilderness 40 Qt
Fourth Place: Esky Coolers 55
Fifth Place: Yeti Coolers Tundra 45

That's true! I did the same thing, but for 12 hours, and the coffee had a thin layer of ice on top, but a simple shake of the container and the ice broke away and it was a cold coffee drink. Amazing how well these things work.

I'm not sure if my Igloo small cooler was any better/worse than others at preserving ice, but the latch system did not give when I flipped the jeep over, just water ran out, so it did exactly what I wanted...kept the cooler and the contents secure. The one that Jared has would have done the same, I'm sure...so for half the price, I'd probably go with what Jared got and just refill with ice a bit more frequently; it has very thin walls.

I made an accessory for my cooler today. Hopefully it'll make it a little easier to strap down since I don't have a permanent set up yet. I used heavy duty zip ties directly to the cooler loops in Moab. I'll plan to use cheap ratchet straps with the new add on for easier tie down.
I bought a grommet kit from harbor freight. Then wrapped some straps through the cooler loops. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160624/1b2681b65a39a731050c8973d1e352a6.jpg)

Can anyone with an Rtic Soft cooler tell me if these are leak proof???

I can try to remember to do a test this evening. I think the issue would be more if you are good at zipping it all the way up or not.

Every cooler I put in the Jeep leaks at some point. It won't be tolerated in Laura's new Subaru. Of course, I don't see her car getting off camber either.

I've never spilled a drop. Just keep the zipper lubed with the supplied stuff. Makes it easier to open but also helps seal it up(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180618/5fa6af56fb68d08c0b7bda1e3afd1861.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180618/25fc0bb5df4060831976523411de9f4b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180618/2fec102d45cb1d975993ff9e744692f8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180618/ceb9bffadd8936d87b420684851a3c4e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180618/e20076eed1ca2df707337ab1448fed44.jpg)
