Title: My first Yeti cooler
Post by: clark123456 on November 04, 2015, 09:06:11 PM
It only holds one can, and no ice, but it is very cool.  See what I did right there ;)

After Wes went on and on and on about how awesome his Yeti coozie was/is, I decided to get one.  I noticed there is a Thermos version I Amazon, which does not look nearly as capable, but it was relatively cheap so I ordered one, too.  Comparison coming...but I need to define the test plan.

You can see the difference in size in the pictures.

I got one of the Yetis about 2 weeks ago. I love it. It holds a 12 oz. GATR AID pretty good too.

See what I did there?

A friend of mine showed me a photo of his friends truck. It had caught on fire & was a total loss. The owner went up to the, took the cup out ( with gloves), removed the lid & there was still ice in the cup. Seriously.

Lady at work has one & says her coffee stays hot for 6 hours.

They are a little pricey but we'll worth it.

The cups are awesome! May go for a can holder one of these days.

Check out this awesomeness for bottles. Stumbled across it the other day.

Do you run yours in the jeep? If so, how are they typically strapped down without interfering with the top? Attachment for cooler?

I have a piece of plywood that is bolted to the floor of the jeep.  Then I have d-rings screwed to the plywood.  Then I have straps that go through the d-rings up to some openings molded into the cooler.  That covers the driver's side.  The passenger's side is strapped by the handle to the roll cage.

The lid opens while it is secured.

Not compared to one of these cups, even in a temp controlled environment.  They're truly remarkable, so I'm going to remark:

I had a cup of ice water last night, so I finished the water and left it by my nest.  This morning it still had ice.

Today I was working in the basement where I started with a cup of ice coffee around 9 am.  I finished the drink around noon.  I just noticed the cup still has ice in it (3 pm).

Glad I could help Tony!! I called it for the record.

I just ordered an RTIC soft bag (30) and am anxious to see how it does.

The cups are amazing! I used really cold water and ice and left it to see how long it would last. Still had a sliver of ice after 20 hours.

Bought an Ozark Trail large Tumbler and put 14 ice cubes and water to the same level in it and a Yeti large tumbler.  After ~18-20hrs the Yeti had a sliver of ice in it and the Ozark did not.  You could not tell the difference though in the water temperature in either.  I will continue to buy Yeti with confidence but I may buy a few cheaper brands also.
don't waste your time or moneY on the Thermos brand can coozie...it's not even close to the Yeti one.

I do not argue that the YETI miht be superior in all real scientific tests, but that $ for $, the other options are more cost efficient unless you have an extreme application, like a tradesman working from the truck all summer in FL, where a cooled down YETI beats the competition by a substantial amount I am told.

Every morning I leave the house with a Rtic full of unsweetened tea and 4 ice cubes from the fridge.
Some days I only drink coffee, and some only the tea, just a mood thing.
I always have ice when I leave the office and come home.  I didn't drink but about half the other day and I set it on the counter in the kitchen that night and it was still there the next morning and had some ice.  I was shocked.

Here's a test:
http://www.leighgendarium.com/2016/01/19/review-yeti-tumbler-vs-rtic-tumbler/ (http://www.leighgendarium.com/2016/01/19/review-yeti-tumbler-vs-rtic-tumbler/)
Both cups perform great.  Both cups keep my ice water ice cold all day, into the evening, and into the next day.
In my opinion you cannot go wrong with either cup.  If I am going to pick one as the winner I will pick the RTIC because it is half the price.  The 30 oz YETI Tumbler is $39.99 and the 30 oz RTIC Tumbler is $19.99.

Yeah, that's why I was okay ordering the RTIC soft bag. I've heard the functionality is great. It'll be nice for the pool and stuff. One negative is the ability to keep the production up to the demand.

I have another brand knock off cup that sucks in comparison, but looks identical to my 20 oz yeti. Makes me skeptical of knockoffs that I don't know about.

Out of all the YETI knockoffs we checked out at SHOT show earlier this year,  Orca had some nice stuff.  The rest, eh.

"Offer Up" is an app that works likes craigslists for sale space. Download app and simply post a pic of what you want to sell and the price. Then enter your zip code and it will show you people near you and what the are selling. Search for a Yeti and make an offer using their installed text to buyer feature on the app. She loves it! No giving out your number to 500 people. Negotiate meet up and buy/sell.

My educated guess is legal strategy.  Win the first one and then it makes your case stronger and easier to win against the rest. They have to defend their patents or they lose them.
I agree.  I know for sure it doesn't always work based on events in my industry, but it makes sense to establish precedence and then maximize it against others who will just pay a license fee, or shut down, instead of pay legal bills.  Usually the lawyers are the ones who win in these types of situations,  especially when they stretch out for years.

Didn't sound to me like they were suing for patent infringement... rather for infringing on their "trade dress" which was something I hadn't heard of before:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_dress

Yeti lost to RTIC so I don't see them winning against anyone else. Of all the roto molded coolers the rtic was the most similar to the yeti. Almost undetectable without the logos

This topic came up today because a guy I work with observed that I have a Yeti and RTIC 30 oz cup that look identical.  I pointed out that my RTIC lid has a round opening to support a straw, but my Yeti doesn't...completely different products.  Lol

I think RTIC is a bad company, but my products from them are awesome.

You are correct.  I used the wrong term.  Same principals though,  suing for protection of IP.

Wasn't trying to split hairs. Just was gonna be surprised if Yeti had actual patents.

gots me one of them there high dollar coolers.. finally. One of my tool guys owed me some $ on a trade we made and i came out pretty good, i have about $300 in it. Lists for around $379+ .. its a brand new size and setup for Pelican. its a 50qt.. little bigger than i wanted dimension wise, but its kinda like a gun safe, bigger is better.

built in cup holders, measuring scales in inches and cm on the top, and built in stainless bottle  opener.. actually holds 53.xxqts so says the paperwork with it.

I really like the latches on the Pelican.
BTW,  most Jeep come from the factory with a bottle opener.

Good score.

Went Walmart & Sam's Club looking for a new TV & found this cup. It's the sporting goods section & so is the Ozark Trail -when in stock.
While at Sam's we saw a guy walking out with a two pack of Members Marks, 32 oz , SS cups. He said they were $20.

My wife put ice & water in the Georgia cup last night at 10 & went to bed.  The cup sat on the nightstand all night & day. At 4 pm I checked & the ice was gone but the water was still as cold as water in the fridge.
Our 0lan is to buy enough for the family & toss all the other cups.

I was at Academy Sports & noticed that they have a Magellin 25 qrt. cooler for $150. The only major thing wrong with it is that it's butt ugly brown.

I ordered myself a RTIC 20 qt. for a early bday present. $124 shipped.  Should be here by Jeepfest.
It's $75 cheaper than I can get a Yeti for.

I've got the RTIC soft bag. It works very well. I was planning to post a review, but guess I forgot.

At Hale, it would hold water and drinks in ice all day in very hot weather and regular opening and closing.  I assume it would likely last for a day and a half, but I refilled on my second morning because I cared more for cold water than test results.  It's perfect for what I wanted it for.

Stock pic, because I won't remember to take one

Went by Walmart in Gainesville & they have the Ozark Trail 30 oz. cups & can holders.
I got the koosie cause I'd rather loose a $7.78 item as apposed to a $30 item.
I swapped the lids on them to see if they interchange & they do. I know you can buy replacement lids for the Yeti but they are $5. May as well buy a OT koosie.
I'll compare them this Friday.

I got a sweet Yeti 20 oz Tumbler for free from a vendor we had a discussion with today.  It has a logo on it, but it's not obnoxious.
