The right rear disc brake squeaks now under light braking which can be an indication that the flange is bent.  Like in this video:

It's not a huge deal if it is since I have that Ten Axle kit sitting in my garage waiting to be installed.

@ Larry, yes, yes you do.  @ Seth, I have a bent axle as well. Take your tire off and sit the jeep on jack stands and let someone give it some gas and see if it wobbles. That is how I found mine. Sux, but you have chromos! {letseat}

You wheeled it well.  Wish I had a picture of that wheelstand.

Go ahead and get the bearings pressed on when you have a chance.

Usually the squeaking is not while braking. My chirp has always gone away when I hit the brakes. You might just have worn out pads.

This was a short wheeling trip for me. I got a little too happy with the skinny pedal and let my ego break the Rebelcon Friday night. Most of Saturday was spent driving to Huntsville for parts. Thanks for the use of the truck Jimmy and to anybody else that lent me a hand during the repair.

Here's my list:

Rubbing is racing:

Shouldn't have been racing:
Grenaded passenger and driver inner and outer axle shafts
Separated ball joints on driver's side

A big thanks, by the way, to Matt and Adam for removing the damaged goods so I could drive home.  {toast}

Wish I could have stayed longer, but we had a blast while we were there.

My only carnage is some electrical issue that is causing my dash lights to flash whenever I use the brakes. Not a terrible problem since it will notify the occupant of the vehicle that he/she is using the brakes.  {ehm}

Friday night was a blast  {toast}

Mike and Gina, thanks for the hospitality on Saturday morning. The coffee and breakfast brought us back from the dead.

Not sure of my carnage, but it was slight, I think the XJ only saw like 2 or 3 trails, rubbed one tree a little, and something (uni-body I'm sure) popped when I was winching Richard in the creek bed at Bears Den. The fan is getting into the radiator a lot more than it was at the start of the trip, I also can't open the front doors with it strapped to the trailer. Guess it really is time for the 2.0 build. It will take a week or so of cleaning the mud off of it to really see if I can see what metal turned loose.

Nothing really for me, guess I need to learn how to wheel... Other than bending the stock transfer skid some more and continuing the destruction of the stock rear bumper from Harlan I came out pretty clean. Maybe 1 of these days I'll spring for the belly-up.

Cromos were $700 and RCV's are $1100.

Think I'd rather put that money towards a D60.

My old tank held pretty damn well for how mch I beat on it this weekend.
I did manage to drag and bounce it off and over every rock out there though.

the belly skid has a little more ground clearance now

(http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/jharps/100_1411.jpg)

And I somehow managed to bend a 33 inch long 2x2x.25 square lower

(http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/jharps/100_1412.jpg)

One of the tires airs itself down pretty qickly too...

(http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/jharps/100_1410.jpg)

And the front drive shaft hit a rock retty good on that one hill at the top of slip and slide, bending it real good and causing it to pull ot of the splines and "self smooth" on the rocks. When I pulled it out I found one of the caps was all cracked up and it discentegrated on the ground

(http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/jharps/100_1413.jpg)

And somehow the last little bit of my rear fenders is totally caved in? damn ninja rocks...

awoesome time!!!!!!!!!

Damn man, I know you were telling me about it in class, but I didn't imagine it'd be quite that bad. Maybe some fishplates like yo did in the rear?

Alex, I'm surprised there isn't more damage than that from Hollowhead. That line is completely insane.

Thanks for the offer, but I refuse to run any Rugged Ridge parts on my Jeep. I had really bad results running the Alloy USA shafts when I had the D44 in the rear. They were really unprofessional about the whole deal and lost my business forever. I have more confidence in the stock shafts anyway.

lock out (locking hubs) allow your front axle to be open as in the stub shatfs will be free spinning and provide a better turning of the front wheels as they did spin indepenantly while also allowing you to manually lock them as in 4WD so that they trun simulatiously.  - and drive flanges (pucks) are full time locked and are not able to be unlocked- so you remain in 4WD.

Not exactly.  If the TC is in 2wd you'll be in 2wd, but the axle shafts and drive shaft will be turning with flanges.  With hubs the wheels are divorced from the shafts while unlocked.  When locked, hubs work the same as flanges.

Both engage the splines on the outers.  Since the flange is a solid piece of steel, it's not going to break.

Kirt, no one is started on TC's - only diff between locking hubs and flanges, {nln}  {hihi} - but yes, if you want to go that route- that is also true, but you still turn like $h!t if flanges are on and you drop to 2WD- since the wheels will not turn independantly.   {btt}

The question was the difference between flanges and hubs, so I was just clarifying that having flanges doesn't mean you're locked in 4wd.  Obviously with a welded/spooled front, you'd want hubs if you plan to drive it on-road.

You had the right idea, ryan, but the clarification was neccesary because mentioning 4 wheel drive was probably confusing to folks looking to understand the function of a lockout hub, which is to disconnect the hub and outer shaft from the inner shafts.

Anybody fixed their junk yet? I put a new boot on my driveshaft and painted it, but that's about it. Got parts coming today though :)

Yeah Tony, they can do it on the lift while it is all together.  Allsouth did it to my 1st JK Rubi, and will do it to my new used one too.... as soon as I get some parts in.

Meg is going to be out of town for a week so I will drive her Liberty while I take the jeep apart. The texture paint I used just flakes off to easy. I plan to go with the flat black enamel that I have been touching up with. It is holding strong. Been talking to AllSouth about prices for a DS and SYE.

Yup. Like Doug and Richard said. No need to take anything apart. It will just make the welding a little easier in my case since they are already out. Depending on the weld height though, I may end up having to remove the knuckles to install them.

Looks like this, except most people tack them in 2-3 places.

It did awesome.  Without any lift, we had to slide over a ton of stuff.  I don't think we even chipped the powdercoat, and no dents as far as I can see.

Those are some heavy ass plates.

Good question.  I had figured on doing the PRG Advanced 3" in the spring around tax time (plus, our van will be paid off).  Now I'm contemplating a TS (Titan 4WD front suspension) swap and going more like 5", plus a replacement leaf pack in the rear with extended shocks.  I could take the PRG anywhere to have it installed, but I'm not sure about the piecemeal stuff - plus, there's finding the actual Titan components.  :hlp

Afraid Cindy might do one of these... {;-(}

I've never known any Nissan to have a front Solid Axle, even back in the 80's when all the cool rigs had a solid axle, Nissan's were IFS. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Logan is right.  The Titan has IFS, but much beefier than the Xterra with options more more lift and travel.  Also increases the track by 5", so rear spacers are required to even it out.  There are options for SAS, but not Nissan OEM and a lot more than I want to tackle with a new truck (lots of fab work required).

IFS is tough for rock crawling.  I regret putting all that money into the front locker in that H3.

I agree having wheeled with Seth in his H3. While Ifs can be made to work anywhere, it is prohibitively expensive to make work well, especially here in the southeast, where traction isn't as readily available. I wish I was on a computer to link the climb that gave Seth so much trouble at Choccolocco.

Here it is.

Well, I can get a full 3" PRG upgrade kit for ~$1800.  I'm trying to get an estimate on the Titan swap, but I'm guessing a bit higher - could be wrong as many parts come of used/wrecked trucks.  I don't know about a front SAS, but I'd have to guess its quite a bit more than the full PRG kit, and doesn't do anything for the rear.

We aren't, and never will be, rock crawlers.  The same truck we offroad with is used for camping and taking the kids to daycare.  {hardlaugh}  I don't foresee a dedicated offroader for us, so it needs to do a bit of everything.

However, for you guys here is some hardware porn (http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=47522).  This guy is doing full axle swaps front and rear, plus other pieces.  Around $15k in parts.

Man what some people will pay for axles astounds me.  {popcorn}

But even without being a hardcore rockcrawler in the video I posted, it was just a simple hill, that my rig, a rubi on 35's, an open/open LJ on 33's and a ZJ on 31's had all made. Ideally one of us should have just tugged him over the root, but none of us expected parts to give out that easily.

That surprised me too. I bet we could climb that with ease.  But that is part of the reason for considering the Titan swap - tougher parts.

I'm still pissed the one time I had to get winched was because of a rut. Not some rocks or steep spots or anything, just a stupid rut.
