Title: Durahmtown ORP Feb. 21 Ride #2 Discussion
Post by: Matt on January 15, 2009, 12:59:28 PM
After January's ride we are going to try and hit a park closer to home, little easier and a little cheaper! (We will all be broke after V-Day).

This will be my first time here but I have been looking at there site and looks like they have developed quite a bit of trail.

I will most likely be at this one as well. Hopefully I'll be regeared/locked in front by then, and my bumper will be on. Either way, most likely, I'll be in for it. I, too, have been following the development of this place, but have yet to make it out.

8. NO riding on trails / tracks prior to 9:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. unless noted in the Lodge.

9. NO Bike or ATV engine is to be started prior to 8:00 a.m. or after dark unless you are participating in a posted night ride.

Oh, you mean that guy, who had 31's with no lift and no trim? The same guy, who spent most of the day working on his Jeep and then ended up having to replace a fuel pump in an O'reily's parking lot that night? Yeah I think I know that guy. Actually, speaking of all that, remind me to tell you that whole story when we're at River Rock this weekend.

My assistant is going to work for me the Saturday of this ride so for now I'm in.  I just have to do something about my tie rod before then, I'm going to try to find one from a V8 ZJ to swap in.  I also lost all the wheel weights on my back left tire at MM so I've got to get them balanced but I've got a lifetime balance/rotation deal so that's no issue.

Let me know if you dont find something. I have a stock one i keep in the jeep. We could sleeve it and do a quick alignment.

I just cant wait to get to Durhamtown. My forecast is, in a few years this will be one of the best parks around. He originally said he had 3000 acres devoted to the 4x4 area

Havent been there yet, but from what I hear he needs to do alot of work to make it good. But with that much land, how could it not have potential. Does this area have many hills, rocks, etc?

hopefully I can get out for this ride.  Several of my buddies ride quads out there and have rode most of the 4x4 park on them and said it looks fun for a stock to slightly modified vehicle

The ATV and 4x4 trails are completely separate.  Mostly dirt trails/roads.
Unfortunately, there's no natural mountain ridge like the Alabama parks, just rolling hills.
There aren't very many natural rocks, unless they are still uncovered.  ;)  Maybe we can help wear the dirt away.
I think they have the resources to make it a great place, but it will require finding some hiding rock and uncovering it like they did at Mountainside.

It isn't "required" but it will greatly improve your experience on the trails and you/we wont have to yell to communicate. makes life easier. plus you'll get to listen in to all the mindless banter.

this is what I have...you can't beat the price, trust me I looked into it:

I would think they require a waiver to be signed and since you are under 18 your parents would need to sign it. I think you can print it out off the net but someone can check for you or I will at lunch.

I live near, really I live in Smyrna so right down the street from you.

Yeah I see the waiver on there but it doesn't say. When all else fails, call them or send them an email. It would suck to drive out there and find out you can't drive. I don't think they would require your parents to sign the waiver infront of them since there is no notary required.

I plan on making it out for this ride.  I just signed in on the, "sign in thread."  Look forward to meeting the ones I don't know and catching up with the ones I do know.
I need to put my Cb in my Rubicon before the trip.  Don't know why I have never done it.

I am not sure about what time I will leave out yet, but I am heading out of Cherokee County on Friday and staying till Sunday.  At least that is the plan right now.  If anybody wants to meet up in Cobb County around the interstate that should work for me.

Will was standing there saying, "man, i lost a puck at rr this weekend." and I look under his jeep and say, "well, there is a puck right here..." (and pulled the puck out from btwn his axle tube, track bar and upper control arm mount. pretty cool that it just sat there and didnt bounce out. wasnt even hard to pull out or anything.

since there is no official off road difficulty zone rating system there is no real answer. Most parks will give an idea like "To ride these trails it is suggested to have X size tires" Then some will say 1 locker or 2 lockers, winch, body protection, ect. I dont see any info like that on D-towns park but I linked the map and enlarged in Adobe and looks like zone1 is easy, zone5 is hard just by the obstacle names. Zone1 list 1 obstacle called Jaw Breaker which looks like small rocks yet zone5 has names like Ballbuster, Cougar Canyon and Nut Cracker. But I am not sure on that so we will have to ask once there.

One thing I did notice is it looks like the trails are directional. There are arrows on the map and one trail says 2 way traffic next to it. Can someone who has been confirm this? Not a bad idea to keep traffic down.

I was under the impression that the majority of the trails at DP were 20' wide and one way.

Sooo what's the deadline for me to check-in? I'm trying to put it off as long as I can without missing out.

D-town is pretty tame right?  Something came up so I'll be holding off on sliders for a bit.

If this goes anything like our average rides... we'll try and put together some sort of plan and then when we get there everything goes differently and everyone goes off to do their own thing.  I'm not sure what time everyone is planning on getting there but since apparently Mike isn't planning on arriving 'til then I know it isn't gonna be a problem.  So no worries.

Let me know and we can meet up.  I am in Kennesaw.

I am still not sure what time I am leaving out, but still plan on camping Friday and Saturday nights.  I am waiting to see what time my buddies have to work till.  A couple of them are riding down with me and plan to ride quads and dirt bikes.

Hopefully it'll dry off. I want to run this place without the doors or top and I can't do that if it's muddy.  I don't mind getting the interior dirty...but I HATE cleaning mud out of carpet.

Oh yeah, I have this clicking type sound coming from the rear-axle area. Kind of high pitched, in rhythm with the speed, not very loud. I can't find anything loose, and it just started this morning and I'm already going insane trying to find it.

 I use my GPS and Google and it tells me to take I 16W to Route 1 North to I 20w.
 But their website tells everyone not to follow online directions and use the ones they list instead.

Problem is, my GPS and google's route say about 3 hours 45 minutes, going the way listed on Durhamtowns website is close to 6 hours!  {ehm}

Can someone who is familiar with this place please post up as to which way we should come from Savannah? Thanks.

Take 16 up to exit 71 and follow Hwy 15 all the way to Union Point. When you leave it's just as easy to get back, follow Hwy 15 all the way back to I16

Guy's, this trip fell through late last night when we couldn't get decent directions. I wasn't going to follow GPS directions or mapquest because they said not to, and their directions put us on Hwy 15 N that is a two lane road or whatever and the travel time jumped from 3 3/4 hours to almost 6 hours. Just got back......it was pretty boring. I think the general consensus was this was our first and last trip there until they do some serious work. The place looks like the mecca of awesomeness for ATV and dirt bike riders, but the 4x4 trails were just not happenin. The only carnage I think was Mark ripping his steering box off the frame when we tried to knock over a "rotten" stump.

This place blows.  I did like 90% of this place in 2WD.  It was basically forest trails... with random "one-way" trails that just went off and looped back.  I think of all the trails we went on, we did 80% of them backwards, meaning not the "one-way" direction.  Not unless I really just want to drive 2 hours and ride forest trails will I ever go back there.  So those of you who bailed or didn't show up, it was probably for the best.  It saved you gas money and $20 for the fee.  Oh well... live and learn.

Sory I didn't make just cause I enjoy you guys.  Sorry to hear about the carnage mark, but sounds like fun!.

I have only heard it's a cool place for wheeling from stockers that have been, and have never seen the likes of River Rock, Morris Mountain, or Tellico.  I didn't want to miss a GATR ride this year.  Oh well.  I do think it's a worthy 2nd ride some month for our more stock members that love to camp, and might even tow the 4-wheeler behind the 4x4.

Had the 44 finished last night and went to install the drive shaft and found a broken yoke ear.  WTF?

Indeed pretty fun for the stockers.  A little too much mud for my liking tough (There goes another $15 at the car wash), and part of the fun for me is watching the big guys go over the stuff I can't (which doesn't exist that much there). And to give a rough estimate of the difficulty, I was in second gear without pressing the gas over most of the obstacles.  Just a few mud holes that took a little extra go.

Scratched my door right after I put it on towards the end of the day  >:(

forgot: there were some hill climbs that would test any vehicle out there.

The fellowship was great. Carnage not to bad, it can be summed up as a "Nut Loose between steering wheel and seat" but I did make a mental note that rotten stumps aren't always as they appear. I must give thanks Alex and his Dad for jumping in and getting a trail fix that got me back to the trailer. I think the only other carnage that wasn't listed was the K5 blew a locking hup on his axle also. Will would have rode all day with a stiffy because of the mud (LOL). I think I took like 3 pictures, there just wasn't anything worth shooting. I did enjoy playing in the rock garden at the spot I parked my truck. I should have let you out Jimmy to shoot some pictures there.

It's like Jimmy said, plated using the bumper mount. It actually just sheared all 3 bolts, someone picked up one of the bolts but I never took a look at it to see if it was a Grade 5 or 8.

Well good.  That way, if'n we find ourselves down there again for whatever reason, we'll definitely know what time the trails close so we're not stuck there... on the dirt roads.  But Mark you made a good point, for those military fellas, trails do close at 16:30...  and Kyle, thanks for covering the Specific time zone region in case anyone here had their mind in that time zone.  But I suppose that about covered it.  Trails close at 4:30 Eastern, 16:30 Military/24 Hour, and 1:30 Specific.  Hell let's go ahead and go 3:30 Central and 2:30 Mountain time zones.. in case they were wondering.

stopping every 5 minutes...not an exaggeration. ::)

Oddly enough, I didn't get off the trails until 4:40ish because zone 5 ended up being longer then I guestimated, and the Yotas were just starting a new trail as I was heading back in.

Going to go back stock for RR and figure exactly what I want to do, full hydro or assist. I really want to take a good look at Steves TJ and shoot some pictures.

Well I finally finished washing off the mud tonight, and apparently my ABS still doesn't work.

I was a little disappointed with Saturday but playing in the mud was something I'm not used to so that was fun. It got better once we split up into a smaller group. And I was very pleased with the KM2's, so if anyone is looking for new tires, these are definitely recommended. Also, I did bend a little sheet metal on the inside lip of my fender but nothing a hammer won't fix.

I want to talk my wife into this River Rock trip next month. Maybe that will be better and worth the cash.

Is that the one that is right on the main road? We saw that and I was wanting to go up there but I broke my Jeep before we made it. If that's the one on the main road it looks a lot better in the pictures than it does from the road. I would like to give that a run. Maybe I will go back.

I'm thinkin' that was that little patch of rocks right off the side of the main road.  The pics do look better than the actual thing.  When you're standing in front of it, it looks nothing like that.  Someone has been doing some photoshop...  :D

I know you guys slammed Durhamtown but we are going to be putting together a group to go up there and have some fun on the trails, maybe even this Saturday.
If anyone changes their mind and wants to join us let me know and we can meet up.

For a change of pavement, it's ok.  But for rock climbing, hill climbing.. that kinda stuff it's disappointed very well.  And for $20...

If you go, have fun though.  Watch out for "Monster Mountain"

I would gladly pick 5 or more lines on that "little patch of rock" that you would not get up.
There are also some hill climbs that I would love to see you try (wet or dry).  Sounds like the group that went did not make it to see some of the better obstacles.  I'm not saying that it's a Tellico but there are things there for every type of rig.  Remember this is a new park with an owner that is willing to work with the 4x4 groups to make it better.

 I am realizing that while I like you guys a lot, I do not have the same interests as many of you here. I am not looking to rock climb and do boulder bashing, after racing motorcycle for a while I want to do something less stressful now and more based on fun with friends.
I am thinking camping out, trail riding and having fun.... I don't need crazy obstacles or huge rock gardens. Other people I have met love Durhamtown, they spoke highly of the owner etc. I'm looking forward to going there, maybe even this Saturday.
I guess it's just all about what you like.
I guess I have it easy in that sense as I will be pleased visiting most places with my friends.
To each his own, and while I like you guys and still want to ride with you guys and BS on here, I'm going in a totally different direction than most of you as far as wheeling interests but it's all good.  {toast}

Hey, please don't feel like you don't belong here, because there are a lot of guys just like you here.  Heck, I started that way too, and progressed with the challenges, and the mod's, and what I really like to do.  But.... I also like to hang out with the off-road/ out doors crowd, ride forest roads, camp (when it's warm) and drink Crown Royal by the fire.   There are some "heavy duty outdoorsmen" here.   (Not me  ;) )

We always plan our rides with stock to mod in mind.  I think some of the guys were expecting just a little more at Durhamtown, and in time, maybe it will be the premier place in middle GA.

Durhamtown just isn't worth the fee to me right now, as I can go to another park where you and I can BOTH have exactly what we want, on the same trail with bypasses, so please come to some of the other ORV parks with us.  I'm glad you're here, and look forward to riding with you.

If you all go back with hb_hound you will think differently about the park as he tends to make his own trails out there. But also don't be confused, it's not RR, at least not yet!!!!!

I don't remember saying that I could climb any line on those rocks either.  I didn't say I was a rock hopper.  So pick all the lines you want, but I'm not one to fold under peer pressure meaning that I'm not going to risk my truck for the sake of your enjoyment.  And as for the hill climbs..... where were they??  We rode a pretty good bit of that place (I thought) and there was nothing there that would make me want to return to that place.  I'm not bashing the owner, I think it's great that there's some place that we can wheel with these off-road parks getting fewer and more scarce, I welcome them.  But there's other places I'd rather spend $20.

I haven't posted here in a while. (been lurking)
I was up there the same weekend as you guys. I go quite a bit. and I just wanted to give you guys some inside info on the place. Mike, the owner opend the 4x4 trails a little while ago and really didn't know what people wanted. We have had quite a few talks about what to do to improve it. he is willing to do whatever people want to improve the place. I've given him ALOT of info and he's been visiting other parks to see what he can add. if you give it about 1 year, he will have MUCH more extreme stuff.
It will never compare to Tellico, but he is trying to make it better.
If you have any suggestions, just let him know!

check this out... Tellico is lame compared to the Rubi Trail... the Rubi Trail is lame cmpared to the Andes trail... give it time guys.. damn look how long it took Jerm to get a lift.. he jeep was lame.. and still kinda lame.. ;D  I havent been to either tellico or d-town but i am not going to bash it just cause it didnt have 500miles of nothing but rocks to climb.. i know if i was the owner of d-town and heard that such and such club was bashing me i wont let them come back ever.. even after i spent tons of money to make it the best place in north america to ride.. that club wouldnt be allowed to come back..

I for one would like to say sorry to Mike and all the rest of the people of D-town for what this club has said about your park. I understand that Rome was not built in a day and would like to come out and see your park one weekend soon.. and if by chance you ask me what could be done to the park I would tell you that I may not be the right person to ask cause I am not a hard core rock climber.. But again Mike and to all those of D-town I am sorry for the comments made by this club.. we should have said it a different way other then " Lame, a waste of time, etc" should have said something like it is a work in progress and cant wait to see it when he is finished..

Mike

mike d/leereed:

i know we have been bashing d-town alot since the ride...but if you look back in this thread it has been said several times that we all think that this place has ALOT of potential.

I cant wait to see what this place grows into...I know it will be an awesome offroad park one day, it just isnt there yet.

SSG, shut the F**k up! Jeez. There is 22 pages of meaningless crap on this place. Bottomline, not on your high priority list of return. Period. If the guy who owns the place than contact him and leave your suggestions with him. I have never been but I have a buddy that speaks highly of it. Why, because he rides 4 wheelers there. The webpage should have clarified this for you guys. Dewild, get some lockers and go to Tellico. But to compare the places in question with the other, is BS!! With that being said, how do you improve D-town? I know MikeL has had a talk with the owner. How open is the owner to suggestion? How long to see plans for change and progress? I see a bunch of talk and not 1 person has shown effort in making this a place they would like to comeback and ride. So, we have 22 pages of BS and bashing? F**k, put it behind you! I need a beer! {popcorn}

yeah i have never been to Tellico and if it is nothing but a bunch of rocks to climb then maybe I wont ever go.. all i am saying is just cause it is not your cup of tea dont bash it here...

I was wrong SSG. Kyle, don't read into our rants either. We both like all of you, well, almost all of you!LOL!!! But yeah, I have never been and if a year is what it takes for this place to come up to speed, than I am cool with it. Just start hammering the guy(owner) with suggestions. While your sitting there playing X-Box or whatever you do during the course of a day, call the dude. See what his plans are. Don't burn any bridges. Dewild, you will go to Tellico! So suck it up and press on with it!!! {salute}

glen: i never take anything you and mike say seriously. haha.

Honestly, If you make a product or business be prepared to hear some criticism. Opinions are always going to be out there. To the Owner, the best advise I can give is listen to the customers. If you take the complaint, work on fixing the issue behind it, it will then become a non complaint. Complaints are always a way to figure out what needs work.

Mike its not whether or not the members that went on this last ride are burning bridges or the owner should ban the club. It is, does this park want this group of people to continue to spend money at the park? Banning a group for having an opinion is pretty stupid. The way business works... Provide a products that customers want or need. If they like it they continue to purchase and the company stays in business. If they dont like it or need it, you better change the product or the way you do business.

As far as this year Durhamtown is not on the schedule again. Hopefully next year there will be alot more there to offer.

Just my .02. I would rather hear honesty than a bunch of fluff. :-\

Definitely dont take alittle whining the wrong way. Almost everywhere we go has plenty for everyone. Enough to peak anyones interest, whether its camping, cruising downs some soft trails, or all out rock climbing. This is a very diverse club as far as iterested and wheeling directions, go. January, we had stock jeeps following a W.E. Rock buggy. Where else can you get that. Everyone was happy, we dont encourage anyone to do or try anything. Its up to the driver what they want. You will find 0 peer pressure on any of our rides.

We are not a hard core bunch by no means.

Anyways, I still would like to ride this place one day just to have an opinion of it. I tend to be on the lighter side of wheeling these days with near stock Jeep so maybe i will like it, maybe not, but at my current 1 ride per month fund who knows when I will get to make it out there  {boohoo}
