Title: Wheelers for the Wounded - 26-27 SEP 09, River Rock
Post by: MJ4x4C on March 01, 2009, 10:26:21 PM
Matanzas Jeep 4x4 Club of Northeast Florida would like to invite you and your club to attend a Wheelers for the Wounded event near you.

If you haven’t heard of Wheelers for the Wounded (WFTW), it is a non-profit organization with the goal of providing a weekend of off-roading and camping to our country's wounded military members all over the United States.  This will provide them with much deserved fun and excitement as they traverse the most extreme terrain our great country has to offer in a variety of the best off-road capable vehicles ever built. Local events where wounded veterans will be the honored guests are being held all over the country in 2009.

Wheelers for the Wounded consists of all makes and models, built rigs and everything in between. We look forward to having all types of 4x4 vehicles coming together to focus on our honored guests - America's wounded veterans!
The upcoming events in the Southeast are as follows:

FLORIDA, Main Event: April 4-5 @ Hard Rock in Ocala, Hosted by Hummer X Club and Venture Jeeps

FLORIDA, Charity Event: June 13, Jeep Show-n-Shine @ Wilson’s 4x4 in Holly Hill, Hosted by Matanzas Jeep 4x4 Club, even though the Show-n-Shine is Jeeps Only, everyone is welcome to attend, all proceeds will be used to pay entrance fees for wounded service members at the Georgia Main Event

GEORGIA, Main Event: September 26-27 @ River Rock in Milledgeville, Hosted by Matanzas Jeep 4x4 Club
In order to show support and interest in for this worthwhile cause, we request that you sign up on the Wheelers for the Wounded forum and post in the section for the events near you.

http://wheelersforthewounded.org/forum/index.php

More details for these events will be posted as they get closer.

Thank you,

Some may have seen the sad news that Jason, the founder of Wheelers for the Wounded will no longer be able to continue his program. While this is unfortunate, Matanzas Jeep Club has many current and prior service members and we think it is still a worthy cause to raise awareness for wounded service members.

So, we have decided like many other 4x4 clubs to continue with our plans to host our Charity Jeep Show on June 13th at Wilson’s 4x4 in Daytona and our main event in River Rock, GA on the weekend of September 25-27.

THE SHOW WILL GO ON!!!

For anyone that did not see me in the New Members section.  I with the Matanzas Jeep Club that is hosting the September event.

Looks like there is plenty of interest in the September event at RR ORV.  I will be there on Thursday to work on getting things set up for the Friday opening.  I am looking for suggestions that people think would help make this a good event.  I expect that we will have several guided trail rides for newcomers to the park.  otherwise I expected that things would be pretty much the standard fare for RR ORV.  I will have a map printed out as well, and was planning on doing windshield stickers to keep track of signed in vs non signed in rigs.  Please have any attending wounded veterans contact me at glen@matanzasjeepclub.com so that I can start a roster.  We would like to use the money raised at our other event to pay for as many entrance fees as possible.

Thanks guys looking forward to meeting you all.

i will be there.. i plan on takin leave for 4 days in Sept for this.. and missing 4 days of deer huntin unless Steve lets me do some early mornin huntin.. anyway I have called the fisher house here at gordon a couple of times to see if anyone there wanted to go,. and do the hunt for the wounded nov/dec time frame and noone has returned my calls... might just have to run over there and talk to them face to face.. also if we have a good turn out here in Augusta I have like 2 bike clubs that are talking about maybe escourting us down there.. now that would be cool... nothing set in stone yet but I am trying... working 15 hrs days and trying to spend time with the wife/kid before deer season starts is kinda hard to do..

I will be there as of right now.. now if the Army trys something I will be pissed...

Who is planning on going from here? I'll be there but to help and maybe ride. Not exactly sure how big of a turn out. $50 but it's for a good cause. Vets get a discount, but you need to contact Clarence. All info is on the flyer. I've been in contact with Clarence from the Matanzas Jeep club that is the host. He is "hoping" for 30-50 people. I really want to see that JK they built and see how it handles RR. Don't forget theres hot dog & hamburgers on Sat. night.
I'd like to see a good turnout. The Vets deserve it.  {salute} Thanks.

how are we identifying Veterans?  cause i could be concidered a veteran.  i could also be concidered a VFW (Iraq and Bosnia).  or are we just leaveing this up to the wounded Vets, either way i'm in, just a discount of any type is good for me.

I apologize about not posting responses to some of the questions, but I forgot my password {ehm}.  I am better now though thanks.

The event is $50 dollar entry fee per vehicle for the weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) Camping is Free.  Everyone must sign a waiver to wheel.  Kids are welcome.  No drinking on the trails of course but allowed in camp.

We have negotiated a reduced price entrance fee for Wounded Warriors with the park owner and Matanzas Jeep Club will cover the remainder of their entrance fee.  In order to do this though I need our Warriors to contact me at glen@matanzasjeepclub.com to pre-register to be eligible.

I wrote my password down so I should be able to answer questions as they come up now.

I have 8 rigs so far from Florida with a possible 4 more.  Gives me a total of about 20 individuals.  In reading the forum here we are expecting another 30 people maybe 40.

The one thing I need help with the most is getting Warriors signed up to attend.  If anyone knows a Warrior in the area interested in attending, please have them contact me at glen@matanzasjeepclub.com

Just a reminder we are going to cook hamburgers and hotdogs Saturday night.  Anyone that wishes to help with chips, or drinks etc would be appreciated.  Just post up so we don't double up on the same items.  Thanks.

Th Georgia Crawlers are supplying the chips and whatever help is needed on Saturday. We are getting the some of the 30 pack variety boxes. I am waiting to hear from someone in the Matanzas club on what kind of headcount we have so far and if any other items are needed. I also am waiting for a call from BJs about a donation from them.
I'll post up when I know more.

Head count is 8 to 12 rigs (About 20 people) from Florida and my guess is 40 from GATR.  Does anyone have a better head count for GATR?  The chips for dinner seem to be covered.  Matanzas has the bulk of the dinner items covered.   If BJ's could kick in cookies or a dessert item that would be outstanding. {letseat}  I don't know that we need much else.  Probably TP considering how many people we have coming. :D

There has only been 2 Vets to pre-register, but the Matanzas club rep. said  he will contend with the issue at the gate about who is a Vet and discounts.
Also cookies for dessert and additional TP is being taken care of by the Georgia Crawlers.

If RR has gotten rain like ATL has, the parking lot will be an obstacle and 2 wheel drive trailer rigs won't be able to go up the road to exit the park. I hate it is messing up the event.

This actually happened to me last year. I had to get pulled up to the exit with the YJ in tow.

It should make for an interesting trip. Here's the latest advisory:
... FLOOD WARNING EXTENDED UNTIL WEDNESDAY MORNING... THE FLOOD WARNING CONTINUES FOR THE OCONEE RIVER NEAR MILLEDGEVILLE... * UNTIL WEDNESDAY MORNING. * AT 10 AM TUESDAY THE STAGE WAS 30.8 FEET AND RISING. * MINOR FLOODING IS OCCURRING AND MODERATE FLOODING IS FORECAST. * FLOOD STAGE IS 27.0 FEET. * THE RIVER WILL CONTINUE RISING TO NEAR 32.8 FEET BY THIS AFTERNOON. THE RIVER WILL FALL BELOW FLOOD STAGE EARLY TOMORROW. * AT 32.0 FEET... MODERATE FLOODING BEGINS. FISHING CREEK SPREADS FURTHER INTO WOODLAND AREAS AND BEGINS TO COVER SOME ROADS IN LOW LYING AREAS. TANYARD BRANCH STREAM CONTINUES TO FLOOD.

I must admit that it does turn into a mudfest.  Probably not the last thing I need caked to the underside of the jeep prior to tearing it down this winter.   We have had to tow a rig or tow up the hill as well.  Hopefully the dually does ok.  When I posted up my original comment regarding rain, I had not seen a weather report for Georgia in a couple of days.  I did not realize you all had gotten so much so quick.  Hopefully damage remains minimal.

2 days of sun dries River Rock to the bone. It has been sunny all day in Milledgeville today and there is no sign of raining for over a week other than the Oconee being WAY high.

It's not as bad as it was last year when it flooded. It just happened so fast this past week. A few of my buddies grabbed 40s of Diesel and watched the water coming out of the dam last night. It's pretty awesome when all the gates are open. That river is zoomin.

Haha yeah I did, but I had no service. Tried to call you back a couple of times without any luck. I'll come out there and check it out at least one day. I'd like to see everybody's rigs and say hey to everyone.

Everything is relatively dry at the moment, and RR is fine unless it has poured within the first couple days before the weekend. But yes, it's supposed to rain all week. Not a cloud in the sky right now though.

I'm confused.  this is on the calender:
"M&G-
Aetna- Oct 17
Ride- OCT 9-11 Fall Crawl @ River Rock"

So RR is the actual official monthly ride, and we're only meeting at Aetna, not riding?

Aetna is the ride for October. The Fall Crawl is an event that we threw on the calendar.

getting the Jeep ready, decided to do some last minute maintenance.  changed the transmission fluid, it looked like it was still new.  changed the transfercase fluid, looked like crap.  changed back to my teraflex lower control arms in the front so i could adjust my caster some.  left to do before i roll out remount a rock light, put skid back on, pack, and load my jeep on the trailer.  should be interesting rideing down the road with a wrangler straped on top of an XJ. ;D

Vince, got another email from Glenn and he says it is still on. He says the back area along the river is closed due to the high water but the rest of the trails appear to be doing OK.  Current projection for rain is 30% on saturday.

He is also going up on Friday to camp. I'll be there Sat. morn. 8:30 ish.

I'm not coming tonight, I have no tent. I'm loaded, just going to get up in the morning I guess and check the weather. Don't want to wheel RR in the rainy mud. I'll call you later or in the morning. Go find a cheap camera and make it your official Jeep camera.

I had a great time out there today, not real muddy as of when I left, but there was some rain starting. I can say that the little mud puddles at the base of every rock did mack it a bit more challenging. Here is the photobucket link to the few pictures shot with my camera.http://s428.photobucket.com/albums/qq9/mdo817gatrailrider/Wheelin%20For%20Wounded/

The third picture is the only one that I got of MikeD, where the hell was he going? The last picture is why I was leaving early, and the rain didn't hurt my feelings coming in when it did.

Yeah, Mike D went up Powerline wet (again), the line to the right of the of the bypass by tierod hill (twice, once in the rain), and the line to the right of carnage. Impressive... but, I figured out his secret - mash the throttle, jerk wheel back and forth, make it up obstacle, then get out and say something dumb.

I dont think anyone on here would be calling that sticker gay...at least I hope not.

it may look cool but when you get up close and start to see how its built, you would be less impressed. the rear crossmember is only held in by 4 bolts. the hitch looked like a blind retard welded it. the actual receiver part of the hitch snapped both of the welds holding it to the frame while it was towing a [relativley] little trailer for the size of the truck. it also only sports a 235 hp 5.9 cummins (the same motor in any 2500/3500 dodge pickup)...dont get me wrong its an awesome motor. but for the size of that truck i would have thought it might have something a little bigger.

then again, I guess it is a ford.

Mike, that was definitely not me. Yeah, I carved a dick into wet paint on Ryan's truck, but I would never write gay next to a POW ribbon!

Thanks Matanzas for the great time! Y'all should come ride with GATR at RR again sometime!

Wasn't me either, I wrote Ryan is G*y on the back of his truck, but I'm with Jimmy on the MIA/POW, not a chance.

I had a great time also.

Sure wish I could have made it. Sounds like a great time.  {toast}

How many vets showed up?

Just to clarify the confusion on Hitmoney:

The Jeep is Rubikong.
The dude is Hitmoney or Dennis.

Get it straight people.  {nln}

There was a few vets but no wounded warriors unless u count Gus Gus's dog bite or me half dead with the flu. Was kinda upset by that but had a great time anyway
