About Morris Mountain
The park was created from a lack of places to go wheeling.  It started as a pastime for Kris and Randy Morris and quickly grew into Morris Mountain ORV Park.  The park now has obstacles, trails, mud pits, canyons, and a primitive camping facility.

Our experience trying to find places to ride kept leading us to areas that forced you to pay for full weekends, camping facilities, or required reservations, making a spur of the moment one day wheeling trip impractical or unaffordable.  As a result,  MMORV has flexible hours and low fees to allow the average joe to take a half -day wheeling trip or a weekend long outing.

Morris Mountain ORV park will be open on the 2nd and 4th weekends of every month only.  Note this does not apply to privately rented events.

I'm planning to get there Fri and wheel.  I booked a room for Fri night at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Anniston Oxford, 143 Colonial Dr, Oxford, AL.  Can cancel up until 1/12/17 so I can see what the weather will be like.  AAA rate of $84

Party at the Fairfield inn...bring your favorite bourbon!  I have stayed at the low rent motel (America's Best) on the north side of the road you use to get to MM; it's a very nice stay for cheap...no sarcasm...I'd stay there again.

Camping spots are just first come first served, no need to call.

The gate will be open, you can show up whenever....bring a good light if you plan to put up a tent in the dark.

Ok cool, hopefully my light bar will be bright enough.

I might possibly have a couple friends coming with their jeeps as well to give our group a try. Do we have any idea as of now how many people we have going?

I went for a day ride yesterday with another group.  It was not as wet as I had expected, so a week with no rain should dry it out even more.

The "loop trails" have gotten harder since the last ride (e.g., Hornets Nest).  Copperhead is buggy only, although the bypass on the right is doable.  GBU about the same.   No one did V-Notch as it was slimy.  One guy in a bouncer did Punisher; said it was water not mud in the hole.  Gauntlet was mucky but not awful.  I didn't get over to the south side of the park,

For the guys who drive their Jeeps to rides like this and want the doors off, do you take them off before you leave?  Or, do you do it at the park?

Depends on the weather. If its chilly in the mornings I leave mine on till I get there and chain them to either someones trailer or a tree.

For those of us that trailer, you can usually just ask someone and leave your doors on their trailer.

Ask?  Lol. Its not uncommon to come off the trail and find doors, tops, windows etc... on my trailer.  One time at AOP ( I think) I found a set of front axle shafts.  :)

But yeah if you don't know them probably best to ask.

I have an extra soft top due to this...I figure if you didn't ask, neither should I.  Thanks for the top that occupies extra space in my basement.

Kidding, of course!

If you ask me, I'll likely offer you a security cable and lock.

Trying to make it.  I fly back from Miami late Friday night.

Just in case you guys didn't know - the Fairfield and Courtyard in Anniston/Oxford are Tier 1 Marriott properties that are 7500pts/night.  30k Marriott pts is roughly equivalent to $100.  So, if you have Marriott points, it behooves you to use the points as that equates to ~$25/night in points.  Doesn't get any cheaper.

Damn that's cheap!

With the amount of rain that we've had lately and looks like we will have in the forecast, how difficult do the experienced guys in the forum anticipate the trails to be for this ride? I only ask because I'm running a stock rig with open/open axles...

Morris does not dry out very quickly. I'm keeping a close eye on rainfall between now and the ride to determine whether I'm still going. It's primarily red clay and is slick as hell when wet.

Will my stock Jeep work with regular wheels on the class 1 trails?
Is it a stock Rubicon, or stock Sport/Sahara?  I am not sure what is a 'class 1 trail', but if that is the set of trails that get your from obstacle to obstacle, then I'm pretty sure you'll be able to do those trails.  A stock Jeep is fairly capable.  If you have a stock Rubicon, you'll be able to do much more than the trails that connect obstacles.

Class 1 trails are pretty much the access roads around the parks, so yes, you should be able to navigate those. They can be steep, rutted, and have some small rocks and ledges.

Based on website, you need a winch for anything past Class 1.  So, even with a Rubicon, looks like I'm restricted to Class 1 trails as well.

Not true at all.  Winch can be useful, but tow strap is very often easier and faster.  If you have someone ahead of you a little tug is all you need a lot of the time.

To be honest, the moisture condition of the ground will determine the need for a winch or tow strap more than a single digit trail class separation (mud can make a trail go from doable when dry to impossible).  Don't stay away from the trip over concern, but be wise about what trails you select based on your vehicle and ground condition.

As Clark said, don't worry.

I remember my first trip to a park and seeing the pictures and videos before I went and I said no way!

The parts have easy roads throughout so everyone can get around.  You'll watch other guys do stuff and have a huge amount of help from this group.

Come on out and watch and get a feel, but I can tell you a Rubicon is very capable in stock form,
and extremely capable with a little lift and bigger tires for some clearance.

There are a lot of trails you can do. You'll be surprised.

Back when my brother in law still had his dealer tag on his Rubicon we were up in Tellico, in the dark, on Upper or Lower 2-forget which, & he was teetering on his belly skid on a rock bigger than his Jeep.

A Rubi can get you into trouble & then out of it too.

I am hoping to come play as well....just watching the weather. I enjoy Morris. A lot can be said for airing down and disconnecting. Some people with lockers still can't pick a line. Riding stock or lifted and open will teach you to pick a line, and if you get stuck we'll help get you out. Someone told my Wife on our 1st ride with GATR That it was ok if we busted something..."They make replacement parts."

PSA:  do not follow directions from Waze to get to Morris!  Google and Garmin get it right, Waze gets you frustratingly close, but terrible off.

Oh man, I'm excited about the awesome gas station breakfast I'll be having on Saturday in Alabama.  I'd tell you where it is, but I'm afraid you'll cause them to sell out.

To demonstrate how considerate I am, I'll give two hints:
1) the breakfast comes from a gas station
2) the gas station is in Alabama

You sure you don't mean Chocco? Finding that place gave me fits. Morris was easy to find, for me.

Not on Waze...no way-z!  I guess it's possible they've fixed it, but the last time I was with someone who used Waze, we ended up on the other side of the mountain, without an easy way to get to the correct side.  We had to use someone's land to turn around...with trailers attached.

I'm interested... if not here maybe a nearby waffle house, if there is one. I plan on getting there early so I can eat something after the 4hr drive

I'm getting pumped up for this. Weather looks great. Can you say 70° in Jan?

Checked the ORI pressures this afternoon and re-spooled the winch line and did a pre-ride nut/bolt check.  Just got back from filling the tank. Load up tomorrow night...

A group of hard men could meet at 8 am and set out to give you more time to wheel...just a thought.

Quick question, never been here before and I plan on camping Friday night but I will be arriving later in the evening( around 9pm)

I saw on the site map that the campgrounds are near the mud pit, but could someone help me with some more detailed/better directions to the campgrounds from the main gate? Thanks!!

After you enter the gate it a big parking lot/ camping area. No rhyme or reason. Just find a spot.

Doesn't matter.

There is nice smooth grass to the right of the bathrooms. Makes for good camping areas.

Conditions are better than I expected based on all the standing water. There is some mud and rocks are slick on some trails.  We were able to hit the right side of Copperhead, Gauntlet, Los Primos, Pick your Line, gator, hornets nest, turner over, etc.

GBU was slick as hell. The right side which is usually "easy" absolute skating rink. None of us could get up it.  Overall there is some mud but we had a fun day.
