Why dont just buy a new set.  They are not that expensive.  :)

I know, mostly looking to see if anyone has a geared axle before I get a new gear set  :P My buddy that I planned on asking for help got his house pretty messed up from the turnada's. I called one shop in Macon and he told me $750 for parts and installation per axle, not to mention he was a complete asshole on the phone. He could have told me $100 for everything and I would have not gone to him because of how he was on the phone. Besides being short with me, he argued with me about what rear axle was under my XJ (he claimed they stopped making 8.25's in 96), then hung up on me while I was still talking.

Gear $99 plus shipping form PORC. It is a Yukon (relabeled Strange) brand gear.
Master install $74 plus shipping form PORC
Have somebody local install it for $100 to $250

Good luck on the local gear install for that little I had a guy tell me 400.00 to do ring and pinion in the 9" and he owns a machine shop.

Jimmy just go to the pull a part and pick up a whole axle and take the gears and axle to some one in that area.

$250 per axle at CCOR.

I found a place (called Johnson Automotive in Lizella - for Richard) that'll do it for $250. My buddy said both him and his brother have had axle and/or t-case work done there and he does top notch work. I guess I know what my 31 hours of overtime from Sunday-Wednesday are going towards, haha.

Gonna order the parts from PORC. $180 for gears with install kit and $50 for the carrier. So, I'll have gears, rear LS, and rear discs for under $1000. Not bad I reckon, next is axle shafts and an SYE.

You can skip the SYE.  Just take your driveshaft to a shop and have a double cardon joint welded near the TC end.  Thats what I run.  No vibes and cost is about $100.

How much longer is an XJ rear shaft than a TJs?

quite a bit.  I dont suggest running a slip yoke and double cardan on a TJ.

I don't either.  :)  I was just wondering how long that shaft is. I've got my SYE and shaft already. Trying to find a good deal on control arms.  :P

Nice Jimmy!

Hundred bucks..  can't hurt. and you've got a driveshaft to use with an SYE if for some reason it doesn't work.

Alex and I have been talking about doing a "junkyard Hack-n-Tap" using an XJ front shaft and a 27 spline transmission output yoke. I think I could do it for under $70 and Alex for that plus the cost of cutting down the shaft.

I think some fullsize ford trucks came from the factory with slip and double cardon shafts.

Jimmy let me know how that shop works out. I have a buddy that help me set up the gears last time but he dont like to do side work so now I have a place to tell people to go.

I still need to do it also. Jimmy have you thought about trying to install the gears youself? I am going to give it a shot with someone whp knows what they are doing.
