Ever feel like the wheeling gods are conspiring against you. I come in last night to handle a bunch of con calls from the hotel this morning and I get over to AOP to meet up with Tony, Kent, Scott around 11:30.
I need to pull my soft top off and while I'm doing that Scott and Tony are like my pit crew airing down my tires. Kent was supervising.
We are ready to roll out pretty quickly. We have a game plan and start out up the main trail and I am tail gunner. All of a sudden, bam. Explosion out the front of my jeep. I can smell coolant so I'm thinking the radiator hose. Once it cools down, we investigate and the entire top of the cheap ass plastic radiator blew apart.
Tony towed me back to the trailer and I just removed the radiator and am off to the parts store.

Wow, that stinks. Hope you find one quickly & get back out there.
-
Jeez, John, you must've really screwed some people over in your life with all this bad karma you've got. Repent, my son...repent! Plastic radiator? Hmmm....
-
That sucks John. goo luck with a quick repair
What sucks just as equal is if you want to wheel the rest of the weekend your going to have to replace it with another radiator with plastic jugs top and bottom (any brand at a local auto parts store) instead of being able to upgrade to an all aluminum one.

Sorry, John...that sucks.
It did make me go lookup the setup Allsouth is installing on mine. According to a certain sales person (he probably considers himself a fabricator) at Allsouth, "We've installed a lot of these and never had a problem with one."
Turns out, I'm getting the setup like Jason put in...Mishimoto all aluminum.
-
I can bring you an aluminum radiator tomorrow if your down for a camp repair
-
He said not this trip but he does want an upgrade

All is well. I got a replacement at Advance and got it installed. Discovered one of the wires from the relay to my electric fan had broken at the connector. So it is likely that is what caused the radiator to overheat (although it all happened so quickly that I got no warning lights or temp gauge reading). We wheeled for 3-4 hours this afternoon and had a blast. I will be upgrading that piece of shit plastic radiator with aluminum along with an aluminum overflow. I hear griffin is good but need to do some research.
-
^^^ glad you were able to get it handled quickly and still get some wheeling in today!

Ok, I wondered what was the root cause. I've seen another TJ blow the radiator, but he was running red for a while. Incredible power when it goes. Did you get any hood damage?

I would replace that cap. It should have blown first.

He replaced it.
It was amazing how fast everything blew out

Actually I think the poison spider hood louver helped me because everything exploded up and out and blew through the louvers and all over the windshield. It was crazy.
All fixed now and had a great afternoon on the trails.
-
What genius engineer thought it was a good idea to make a plastic radiator?
-
The bean counters. Plastic is cheaper than any metal. Plus it's guaranteed to fail as it gets brittle with age. They're hoping you come back to them & get a replacement.

Park was in Awesome condition this morning. It rained just enough last night to knock all the dust down.
My group at 9 am was advance trail. Only had two trail fest people and everybody else was GATR. It was pretty cool. We ran GWT then 56 and finished with 41.

Bobby did we run GWT a couple weeks back? I know we did 41 & 56

Morning run was awesome.
Tony and I had one of the afternoon groups with way too many rigs. We made the most of it.
It was nice having Mark A riding shotgun so we could pass the time talking.

Saw some cool stuff at the vendor area.
Found my next upgrade. Crane inner c's and kingpin knuckles for the Dana 60. Pure beef.

Just got the upgrade bug or is this a solution for an identified weakness?
It's a longer term plan. I want to eliminate ball joints up front and have hi steer. If/when I do it I will go full hydro up front and push the axle forward.

Is there some reason you're anti-ball joint as a type of joint, or just so you can get to high steer, properly?

Our morning ride was great. I capped my afternoon off with Scott, and a cj with coilovers at the 40 section. Love that part of the park! Big boulders and extreme obstacles //SLAMIN//

High steer would be the main objective and if I can do it and upgrade the strength of my knuckle then that's even better. It's a nice to have not need to have.

Would you be able to get double sheer out of it? The guys on Pirate are not a fan of the drag link on top and tie rod on bottom of single sheer.
I also noticed a Moses' laws view on the use of Safety Washers on heims (thou shalt always use safety washers....). Their concern is that if the heim joint separates (two and three piece design comes apart) the joint can simple slide over the bolt/nut head and you're screwed.

Apparently someone got a little heavy on the skinny pedal and came down hard. Last night after the raffle.

Trail 57. Driver hit his head but was ok. EMS said no concussion. Was the Fortec shop Jeep. Driver got some explaining to do tomorrow. Oscar from SFWDA told me about it. He drove EMS tech to the site.

Kevin- the photographer that was riding with me on the morning ride rolled a RZR in your same spot. He was ok but destroyed the body and tore one front A arm off.

Evidently was climbing a wall and the front end came up. Hit the gas and front end came up more and rolled to the left as it went over backward. Then continued sliding down 30 feet to end up there. Looks like a hard hit for sure.

The front end raised up & he hit the gas?? I'm no expert here, but that doesn't seem like a good choice //OLDSKOOL//

@PHANTOM You made this album:

And this was a really low LJ on 43s. I took a look and it had a good amount of up travel at the shocks. I was expecting it to be sitting on bumpstops when I walked over to it, it was that low.
