Title: Be proactive with your health..
Post by: tjsahara00 on January 25, 2022, 08:26:25 PM
I debated on sharing this but feel like it's to important not too. Thanks to years of being proactive with my health (especially after 50) I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December. It was caught very early and was just a small spot. My gleason score was 3+3 6 which means it was a slow growing cancer. Being relatively still young at 61 I decided to have the prostate gland removed last Thursday and be rid of the cancer with no need to do radiation.

As all of my friends on here grow older please take of yourself and be proactive. Do your colonoscopy and whatever other screens or biopsies your team of doctors may recommend.
I plan on watching my grankids for many more years. God bless

My grandpa died from colon cancer and my dad went through prostate cancer so get checked. I have already had a few polyps removed, one was precarious.

My Grandfather also passed from colon cancer & it’s an often overlooked issue.
I haven’t been to the doctor in 11 years but think I’m a tad overdue.
I’m very glad you caught this early.

A good reminder,  Kevin.

Did you have frequent psa testing? If so,  did the psa test identify the presence of the cancer?

My PSA always ran a little high...from the high 4's up to in the 7's. Usually stayed in the 5's. My family doctor and my urologist always kept an eye on it.I had a biopsy close to 10 years ago and it was fine. That urologist retired and I started seeing a new one.

We had been watching it and toward the end of 2021 he said I may want to think about having another biopsy done in the future. I said let's go ahead and schedule it. Well it all happened pretty quick after that.

He took a total of 18 samples and the results was what I mentioned...3+3 6 gleason score. After knowing several acquaintance who had it, 1 did the radiation and 1 had it removed. The one that did the radiation always had problems.

I had the robotic radical prostatectomy procedure. It took 3 hours and I have about 20 staples in 5 holes across my belly. I have to wear a catheter for a week.

I’m glad you are on the road to recovery Kevin.

My Dad had prostate cancer and went through a similar procedure 15 years ago.  Cancer free ever since.  I keep a close eye on my psa due to family history.

Glad to hear you caught it early Kevin and hoping for a speedy recovery for you.

I got my PSA levels checked this year for the first time after my dad was diagnosed last year with prostate cancer. His level was 1,300 and it was the first time he’d ever had that test. He’s about 5 months past how long they gave him but they said if he would have caught it earlier (before a trip to the ER) there would be treatment options.

I'm glad you shared that Kevin.  Hope your recovery is going well.

I know I do annual physicals and all the tests at their scheduled times.  My dr. tracks my annual PSA score to keep an eye on any movement and trends.

Cystogram this morning show no leaks so the catheter was able to come out along with the staples.

Thank goodness they was able to remove the dang catheter. Gonna take another week off and go back to work on Feb 7th.

My dad had a terrible time with his catheter removal. I remember driving him to an industrial park in Gainesville so he could try to pee and he couldn't. I've never seen him in that much pain and it was followed by a trip to the er to get it put back in.

Dads doc told him with prostrate removal it starts out bad but gets better where as with the radiation or “seeds” it starts out good but ends up worse. Hopeful you are on back side of the worst of it.

Yeah I didn't want any part of the weeks of radiation or the "seeds".

Thanks for sharing those from your dads experience. That's why I shared...the more awareness the better.

I appreciate all the comments and well wishes.

and to go into old age as fit as possible.
