Title: Hardiplank and a tv mount
Post by: patman on September 16, 2017, 11:34:54 AM
I want to put a tv outside on our patio, and the wall I want to use has hardiplank on it. Whats the best way to go about this? Small tv, maybe 32"?

I'd look at using good quality toggle bolts.

https://m.lowes.com/pd/TOGGLER-10-Pack-0-25-in-x-2-5-in-Yellow-Zinc-Toggle-Bolts/3183831

Even a couple of these combined with some lag screws into the hardi and sheathing behind it would be enough for me.

I would look at using a ceiling mount. Hardiplank can be brittle sometimes.

I'm assuming there is plywood/OSB sheathing behind the hardi, and the toggles would need to sit behind that sheathing.

I put mine in a similar location over HardiPlank.  Find the studs and lag bolt into those.

Agree w Chuck. Hardi can be brittle.

There are studs behind that hardiplank.  Find one and install it.  I have one on the porch at the lake and just installed one on an interior wall.
The tv's are so light today.

If the mount won't fit the studs (16" on center), screw a board across the studs and attach the mount to that.

Pre drill into a stud if you can find it, if not toggle through the hardi and sheathing, as long as it's not an articulating mount. If it is, go into the studs for sure.

You still have to get power and cable to it. It still say it will be easier to run all of that in the ceiling.

Power.

Wireless cable or directv box work great.

Dumb question, but will a stud finder even accurately work through the planks? Aren't they slightly elevated off the wall since they overlap?

Also, if i find the studs, did y'all just let the mount rest against the planks or did you make some sort of vertical wood spacer that distributes the load over several planks?

I have contemplated the ceiling mount, but not sure I want the tv that high

You can get whatever length pole you need.  I have a three or fiur foot one in my garage.
Direct tv and Uverse have wireless boxes, Comcast, charter, wind stream do not.  Not sure about dish network.
If you're running wire down the wall, when you cut your hole, you can find the stud.  If you use a ceiling mount, you can run the wire inside the pole

The hardiplank should be nailed to the studs.  If not, some measurements should get you to a place to find the studs.

I didn't use any spacers. I just let the mount rest against the planks.

A good magnet can find the nails.

Maybe a quality sonar based (or whatever technology they use) stud finder could find the stud.

Can that stuff be installed directly to the studs?  Or is a layer of sheathing required?

Mine was directly on the studs, but it's an older house so code may have changed.  You could predrill through the hardiplank till you get to the wood.

Man, I just looked at tvs the other day. There was an oled flat tv that was mounted with magnets. Whole thing was 1/2" thick.

A wall mount should be plumb so I would cut a wedge.

Is there any power outlet on that wall inside or out? There's your stud and your power to grab. Hopefully there is one inside right where you want to hang the tv outside.  Fish it up.

I'll look at my mounting options today after I cut the grass. Ceiling mount may be the easiest, but i already have the wall mount, so that's the way I'm leaning. If it goes on the wall, I'm definitely cutting a wedge to hopefully prevent cracking the planks at the edges.

I hate you, Sam.

Kevin, Augusta is practically on your way home from gulches. Slight detour, but it could still be on your way home lol

@patman   Just don't do this!  You would be amazed at some of the DIY installs I've seen over the years.

The two I have at the lake.  I moved the TV in for Irma.

Kevin
I poked the wires in the sheetrock and pulled them down and back out down by the baseboard and need a plate to pull them thru and cover the hole / seal the hole.  Prefer not to have to put a quick push in box in, is there something perfect?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170918/be9de662f842a91a570bfc9b1b53a86f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170918/f36e1ff78118faae84e296adfe25cba6.jpg)

Doug, these are made to screw into a standard inwall box, but if your hole isn't bigger than whee the screws would go in, you can just screw it into the Sheetrock.  The plates are reversible, meaning the " nose" would go inside the wall ( you have to have a hole big enough to for it to fit it, in wall box) or just mount the flat side up against the wall.  If you can't find one let me know.https://m.ebay.com/itm/261841290513?_mwBanner=1

Or these

https://m.ebay.com/itm/261841290513?_mwBanner=1

One is flat plate with rubber insert that you cut to put wires through, the other is a flat plate that has a hole covers by brushes.  A power cord might not fit through it.

I used these in every room. Just mount one behind the tv and one near the floor and run the wires behind the sheet rock.

I opted to mount it in the corner. The hardie plank on our house is mounted to plywood covered in a waterproof barrier. I removed two of the boards, used a stud finder, bolted the mount to the stud, and dremeled out one of the planks to fit around the tv mount. The caulk is drying now, and I'll paint over it whenever I get the bucket out of the attic since it's mostly blocked by the tv. Tv is 32", I think I have room for a smaller-bezel 40". Direct tv is coming out Friday to upgrade our equipment and give me a wireless box. Power is temporarily a drop cord until I plan out some other patio upgrades.

I've decided that the big empty wall will be pimped out at a later date, planks taken out, fireplace added at the bottom, then the whole outcropping covered in the same stone that's on the front of the house, with a nice wood mantle. Patio furniture will be swapped to a more comfy living area set. Maybe within the next 6 months, unless we really like sitting outside to watch the tv now that it's cooling down in which case I start after the River Rock ride in Oct.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170925/526340d899e75933c392479af2e199e5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170925/2887d5a2e7a4aa4c1abc462c0171a1b7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170925/146fc5c685eb469ddca583e77a2ab0cd.jpg)
