Expedition: Rides that are based on a stock 4x4 chassis. Fun for the whole family. These rides will be a good way to introduce you and your vehicle to the sport. Get your feet wet and gain some experience behind the wheel off-roading. These rides will not be challenging in anyway. Minimal/No damage expected.
TIER 2 –
Intermediate: Rides that are open to all 4x4 vehicles. There will be challenges for stock to fully built rigs. Plenty of bypasses for lesser built vehicles. Some light damage/Broken parts can be expected, depending on how far you want to push your vehicle. You will have a chance to gain a lot of off-road experience on these rides.

I'd like to ride if anyone has an open seat, I don't think the Jeep will make it up there. She'll be under the knife.
-
I'm likely to go, but I doubt I'll end up camping and I doubt I'll have an open seat (sorry, Will).
-
Always open seats. Fam will be with me.

This will be a close ride for me. It should only take me 30 minutes to get there

Be sure to follow the break-in procedure for those gears ahead of the actual off-roading trip. Plan on some boring driving around so you can get the miles on those gears that you need to have before slamming them with power at a 45* angle.

I'm confirming whether my son will be coming based on his high school baseball practice schedule. If he does not come, I'll have an open seat Will and you're welcome to ride with me.

For those who haven't been before, the trails are dirt/clay with some rocks and have a lot of short steep sections interspersed with flats, like stairsteps. Some are in deep cuts. Depending on how long it's been since they were graded, there may be deep ruts as well. Stock Jeeps can make most of the trails with some effort, and lockers make it eay: IF it's dry. Rainfall occurring within a week can make the place very treacherous, since the red dirt turns to slick snot.
Even being an "easy" park I've seen plenty of carnage on dry days too.
One trail, 93b, should be attempted only by built rigs. Has a couple of ledges and a nasty tree root, plus once you're on it there's no place to turn around. Long way to winch.
There's room for a few trailers at the trailhead, but best is to leave trailers at the HD parking lot.
The entire park can be easily covered in one day, so camping really means doing the same stuff the next day. You can run the main loop trail in reverse which does give a different look.
If anyone is a geocacher, I place a cache at the very top a number of years ago, and there are some others lower down as well.
-
Kirk, please provide a short description of "built rigs".
-
Wish we could make it, but I have a job that day. :\
-
Kirk, please provide a short description of "built rigs".
When the roads are wet it's on the gas for beasly. Those that are open, well might as well put a tow strap on. That's not being mean, but been there several times when wet and saw it all day.
Built rigs for 93B. It's wet you need 8 cylinders, a 6 will not pull it. I tried with another guy we basically winched the whole trail. Both of us locked and on the rev limiter, nothing. I was on 35's and the charokee on 33's. If it's dry then locked front and rear. If your not locked you will be a trail plug. A couple go at a time or else you will be there for a whileeeeeee. Controlled momentum in needed for the hill. 93 doesn't contain enough rock for you to pull when wet.
-
Plan on making this ride. I broke in my lockers and gears in this park and went ahead and broke my axle housing also!
Will,
I have an open seat. Just come on up I am sure you can ride with someone.
-
Thanks, Tripp. I hope it doesn't rain before or during the trip...only a 6 cyl in my ride.

if it rains to hard or to close to the trip date. Nobody will be going. They close the trails if they are to wet

My last time at Beasely I had to gas the V8 once to get up (39 Krawlers). Scott Freas was there with the Toyota truck and made it with some effort. Another rig we were with tried it and broke a rear DS.
-
I've driven up 93b easy, and fought for every inch. If it has rained in the last month, it's going to be a serious challenge. I think that stump is the only thing that kept me from going off the side of the mountain there twice.

Yeah I don't get the comment about needing a v8. You can get just as much wheel speed withwith a 6, and maybe less weight. Now if you mean the 8 has huge axles and tires, I get it. I made it on 40s when the smaller guys couldn't. Had a 6.
Clark you'll be fine, well as much as the rest of us.

Reading my post would have told you that an 8 is needed if it was wet. It wasn't referring to dry conditions.

Here are two videos from when Kirk and I were out there last. Both of these are in the same spot, right at the tree root. I had to go around the rock and up the root a little on the right side (IROKs......). With stickies, Kirk came right up the rock face with a little wheelspeed. Now to see if I can get this vids posted without screwing them up.

This will be 80% of your view most of the day
To me this is a good step up from forest service road
rides where you hardly ever use 4 wheel drive. With
mostly hill climbs and several spots with rocks you will
use 4 wheel drive at Beasley.

Did read it. Still doesn't make sense to me. V8 would provide more horsepower, and you need wheel speed and traction when it's wet.
It was wet when we were there.

Will try to make the ride, not sure yet. Would love to say I had done 93B.
-
There are some serious inclines and declines at this place. Even though an easy park and 90% can be done in a stock wrangler, an amateur can get in trouble real quick here. As a club we have had more than a few roll overs here.
This is a park where you need to leave some space between you and the next guy all day. When going up or coming down, keep your wheels straight and stay off the walls both directions.
Also if you experience overheating problems in your vehicle, this is not the park to bring it to.
-
Due to previous rides and experience's at Beasley Knob
it is imperative that you have front and rear tow hooks
and your own strap's. This is for the safety of you and
everyone else. This is MANDATORY!!
-
Would, but same as will under the knife until my new axle is found.any seats available?

Kevin nailed it. YOU MUST HAVE A TOW POINT FRONT AND REAR. And make sure it is a good tow point, not your leaf spring shackle or dinky hole in the frame. I have spent too many great days at this place pulling guys up and down the trails. Also, make sure you have GOOD TREAD on your tires. I remember a time where we had 2 guys show up on bald tires and did nothing all day but give Dannys rig a work out for pulling them all over the place. If you don't meet those 2 requirements then you might as well stay at the house. This is a VERY easy place but has very steep inclines and declines with ruts to traverse and some off camber spots while doing so. I have seen more rollovers and dumb things happen here than ANY other park in the south.
Now for some poking...
1. Mortallis, I have never needed a v8 and don't plan to need one anytime soon. Come off the saddle //OLDSKOOL//
2. Kirk, that rig is way more capapable than you drive it as. Give me the keys and I could show you //;D//

Par looks fun.
Question: is it worth the 3.5 hour drive for me? I have 35/open/open, so if it's literally impossible to enjoy the difficult trails without being a huge burden, i dont want the equivalent of fire roads for the distance traveled.

The trails you could see would all be done in about 4 hours. FSR with very steep climbs. Personally I would not drive 3.5 for a day trip to Beasley. Its about 45min- 1 Hour for me, so its a nice trip for the day.

Agreed. Not worth the drive. I may try to come in friday and camp lite. Need some time in the great outdoors. I love my 6...

Those obstacles do not look very intimidating (prior to rolling footage), but the slipping around on those rocks looks dangerous. //:hlp// It didn't look too wet and since Kirk was there, I have to assume it was not wet. //::)//

You know your self that no one picture or video does justice
to a trail. That trail is very steep and drops off the side of the Mtn
by the stump. You can tell the angle a little better in my photos.

Kevin's flop photo, as I recall, happened while backing out of the trail (bit of inattention?). Correct me if my memory is faulty.
-
It was turning around after dropping off a passenger at the start of 93b
He rode with me through 93b, I cut a side wall and had to change tires
at the top. Didn't realize he took his keys with him and had 6 or 7 Jeeps
blocked in. Time we got back around to the start of 93b people where
ready to go. I got in hurry turning around at the top of a hill and wasn't
paying attention when the right front dropped off a rock at the same time the
back left rides up onto a rock.....was a dumbass move

For those of us who haven't been before and are in-between stock or locked on 35's.. Is there anything there that's middle of the road?
Ie my situation- I'm open/open on 35's. From the previous comments it looks like it is either 93B type terrain or smooth rolling grades.
Are there bypasses to the more difficult obstacles?
-
You will be fine. The locked guys will try a few climbs and possibly 93B (depending on dry or wet). No worries.
-
93b is off by it's self.....there is an area you can
pull up to and watch the first section.
The whole rest of the park maybe has 3 sections
with a few rocks and those have a bypass
other than that it is rolling hills
-
I plan to go either way. Question is would it be worth while to have an intermediate group, like we had at gulches last time? Are there enough trails that would be considered intermediate (I've never been, so I have no clue)
If not, but there are bypasses to the most difficult sections then Intermediate could go with hard and bypass the hardest sections. (Without being a boat anchor at every obstacle)
After I read thru the thread, I figured I wouldn't be the only one with questions.. Just throwing them out, as I wouldn't want people to skip the ride because they thought there wouldn't be anything fun for them to do out there.
Now, back to a serious conversation.. Does 2 extra cylinders really make that much of difference??
-
If you have zero cylinders, 2 extra could make a significant difference.

2 cylinders more, always more horsepower and tq. On this coast wheel speed is key a lot of times and power achieves that. More rock with solid ground, not as important.

Warden, this park isn't like gulches or morris mountain, this is a government run piece of land. Almost everything at Beasley is vertical trials, no rocks. There are a few v-ditches & slippery sections (all slippery) if it's rained. There really aren't any bypasses because there aren't obstacles like at other parks. If you get stuck then everyone behind you is stuck.

BACK ON FIRST POST......

- 9:15 am : Built rigs 35's & up with lockers
- 9:35 am : Under 35" tires
Driver's meeting stays the same : Home Depot @ 9:00am
I read the post, it was the discussion after that made it seem that it wasn't worth the trip, if you didn't fit into the first group. Just clarifying, so that i have a group to ride with //;D//
-
You need to go if ONLY for 93B.
Rocks, ledges, stumps, wet, steep, roots, you get the picture.
-
For the guys in group 2. what kind of recovery gear are you bringing?
ill have my long strap, hilift with recovery kit, and chains (only used if it comes to that //SLAMIN//)
also basic hand tools.
That should be enough to keep things going when someone gets suck and as usual well be happy to assist when the time comes.
-Danny-
-
do you have front and rear tow points?
-
I'll volunteer to shepherd the smaller group since I've been to Beasely numerous times. I can try 93B later in the afternoon.
-
The FJ does have front and rear tow point. Only thing it's missing is ground clearance. Lol
-
So everyone is meeting at hd. Then two groups split up.
If the 35 and up is too big does it get broken down to minimize mile long of rigs at one time?
Those who use trailers will unload at trail head. More time will be needed help split the groups.
At the moment im tentative as long as I have working rig. Ill know after next weekend.

so now i have this mental picture of Kirk, with a staff/robe/sandals with a bell? //laugh// //terror//
-
He still has the originals from back in the day.
-
Trailer rigs should go ahead to the trail head and be ready when we roll thru.
We will complete the paper work at HD.

I added a note to that effect in check in thread.
-
There is a limited amount of space for trailers at the Windy Hill trailhead. I would just leave trailers in the HD parking, or else use both trailheads.
-

You wont need much ground clearance here.

I'll probably hit waffle house around 8 then unload at hd at 9

My mind is running blank, but how far is HD from the turn off of the main road?
I don't have a tag but does have insurance. Different type of insurance. If it's a short skip I'm not worried about it.

Anyone got an open seat if I show up at the Home Depot? I am good at running up and down the mountains so I promise to pull cable if needed and give bad advice. //;D//
-
You can ride with me, Scott
-
Ill have space as well Scott, but I don't know if you'll want to ride with me since ill likely be taking it easy //:D//
-
Thanks guys.
-
I would like to go but see if I have a rig running.
Rubicon has a busted locker and bearing gone.
Today in the race car I broke lug studs, broke front a rock when I smacked a tree at speed, and a list of things in the race today.
Never ending.

Might be a wash for the weekend ride. Rain today is bucketing down. I still need to have shocks ordered and make here before saturday as well. Coming from CA and ordering today... //:hlp//

Yup. Might have to just ride on busted shocks. Not willing to pay for 3 day!
-
4 days to dry out is probably doable, but if it rains there tomorrow or later in the week it will be difficult for mild builds and next to impossible for those w/o lockers.
Some years back I went 3 days after rainfall - 37 MTRs locked F&R and had to winch once; buddy with similar Jeep but heavier had to winch 3 times. Lots of the time it was back up and gun it up the slopes.

If it's a wash out, we can always hit Charlies Creek (Persimmon Road sp???) Up that way we can pile into Bobby's new crib for a party!
Serious question.... I may not have the full 500 miles on my new gears before this ride.... anyone think that will be an issue? I know when I bought my brand new cars they didn't deliver them with 500 miles.

be pretty dry to make a go of it. Im leaving friday morning headed there to setup camp.

Then you can give us an on-site report.

Will be watching the site and reports. This place does not see much sun.

well if we pick a backup or diff. location by thur. let me know, might as well just go in to work if its called off. wish there was a alt. place , for a nice weekend ride. where we can camp and hang out., i need to get away. bad. cause the nxt two weeks got work and then im stuck in a uhaul for 13 hrs taking my daughters stuff up to Oklahoma to help her move in.

We need no more rain at all, warmer weather, sunny if at all possible. Some wind would be nice too.
If not, they may not reopen the property for the weekend. They are real tight on opening it if its wet.

My kids are out for spring break this week, so me and the family got a cabin on lake Nottley north of Blairsville for Thurs - Sun. I'll be trail riding at Beasley if it's open or cruising around the mountains. Either way, I'm already commited to a weekend in the mountains so I hope the trails are open.

sorry guys i have been super busy.. house for sale, pull truck and jeep down, bought a ring for the little woman.. was planning on something special this wknd to ask her the big question... but I live in Blairsville, my body shop is only about 5 miles from Windy Hill, i will be more than glad to check the gate tomorrow or Thurs afternoon, sometimes they dont update the website the second its opened.. and as for the treacherous when wet comments, its more like walk out and get your rig tomorrow kinda thing lol... I will try to come to the drivers meeting anyway saturday morning to meet and greet might even do a little riding in my f150 with yall since all my other junk is broken or down.. If anyone needs repair stuff/lifts for repairs/tools whatever just call my cell, a couple of the guys (kevin, matt) have it and i will be around all day to open up shop if yall need anything. Worse comes to worse ive got a couch and a basement with a pool table if somebody needs to crash at my place.. and somebody asked about camping a Trackrock? its prob 15 miles from windy hill...

Is anybody going to be driving up from the Atlanta area Saturday morning? thinking we could meet up and convoy to home depot. I'm coming from Smyrna (northwest ATL)
-
I was going to ask the same thing, especially since this is my first time doing this. I'm coming from Kennesaw.
-
I'm in Canton which is on the way, but don't really want to drive south to come back north. Maybe I'll meet up along the way. A buddy of mine should be signing up with GATR tonight. He has a Jeep on 39's and a buggy in 40 something's. Trying to get him to go CORE so he can join in at Windrock.
-
I'll be leaving from Kennesaw at 7 am. If someone is going to meet up and caravan with me, we'll pull out of the Publix parking lot at 7 am (Publix, 1635 Old Highway 41 NW, Kennesaw, Georgia 30152-4480). Be gased up and ready to ride at 7 am and be on cb channel 7. I drive 65mph, so keep that in mind if you are into speeding. It should be about a 1.75 hour trip, according to Google maps. I have a blue Tundra pickup pulling a green tj.
Let me know if you are going to caravan, otherwise I will not wait at the Publix.
There is a Racetrac gas station next to the Publix, so you can get gas, snacks, and beverages there.

Have not stretched the old girls legs in quite sometime. Not that beasley will satisfy my rock desire, but it will be off pavement. New shocks should be here friday as well //letseat//

This is my first time to Beasley. I saw posts about the amount of room at the trail head for trailers. Is there room or should I go to Home Depot to unload?
-
Home depot. There is room for maybe 2 trailers at the meet spot. No need to gum it up.
-
The normal camping spot is a flat area at the trail intersection shown as Nicholson Gap on the trail map. Lots of room.
-
With 17 vehicles in the small-rig group, I'd like to have two other experienced volunteers to ride along, one at the back and one as tail gunner. The line will get very stretched out.
-
Might need 3 groups in all honesty. Trails are tight and no room to turn around if need be. 3 groups split with an exp leader and gunner would be fine. Line up winch, no winch and on and on.

I've never been, so I wouldn't be comfortable leading, but I'll help take the tail or middle.

A truck stop will have some, the selection may not be great. There is Love's Truck Stop on the Emerson Exit of I-75 just north of Acworth.
Some wal marts have them as well.

I live in Hiawassee ( 20 miles passed Beasley) and I drive to Smyrna everyday, work 8-12 hors and drive back! Yeah, it's doable for sure. Just makes for a long day

There is a CB store at the Truck stop at 285 & Donald Lee Hollowell just inside the perimeter ask for Leo. He knows his stuff.
I will be driving up from Downtown ATL and plan to leave at 6am. I believe we are on Channel 7. I will be headed up 75-575 etc I would guesstimate we'll finish up round 4ish. So tell your S.O. that you'll be home about dark 30. Mine knows that means sometime 'round dark give or take 30 mins or an hour. Y'all got to train em or bring em.

I'd leave the winch in the bed or at home. It is more likely to be a anchor than useful. Bring a tow strap and someone will yank you up or down an obstacle. It is possible I am envisioning the wrong thing.

Man there is just too much going on. I'm heading up in the Smokies for an overnight camping trip with some other Jeepers. Hate missing this ride but can't do everything I guess.
Anyway looks like we all got great weather, you all have a great ride, I know you will.
-
Topless but keep in the doors on for the ride up. Probably throw them in the back later. Danny will let me store them in his sub ;)

Many thanks to Tony and crew for the guidance on the second group. I had a great time on the maiden voyage of my jeep. The trail was a lot more hairy and my jeep is a lot more capable than I thought. Is there a 12 step program for the addiction I feel coming on?

Many thanks to Ben for leading our group and Danny for running tail gunner.
Many, Many, Many, Many thanks to Tim C for saving my ass! I will owe you forever. //cheers2//

Now what'd you do?!
-
Now what'd you do?!
I seem to be determined to flip the Jeep. I was denied climbing a spot with a lot of slick dirt (not mud, but not firm ground), so I was repositioning (for like the 5th time) to get a running start at it, but each time it pushed me away from the line I wanted/needed. The final time I had my passenger rear wheel in a deep hole, which made the front very light...light enough that without Tim jumping on the front bumper I would probably have done a complete back flip. There is a video of it on someone's camera, I think JD's son has it. In retrospect, I should have just had Tim pull the winch line to a tree and used it to back down, safely.

You seemed determined to end up on your side just about every ride.

I have the video and will try and get it posted tomorrow. It was definitely a scary moment...

I've had a few:
Gulches - Palmetto - Lost control of gas/clutch/brake (divine intervention saved me //:bs//)
Golden - Moon something - Horrible line (tree saved me);
Golden - ??? - Couldn't complete the climb and repositioning me put me in a bad spot (winch line saved me) <-Really wasn't in danger since I knew to just break out the winch line
Beasley - The mini-Wall - Slipped into bad position (Tim saved me)
I don't think I was in bad at Chocco (any trip), Windrock, Black Moose, Morris, or Bell Mtn.

I hate the feeling of when it gets tippy. I don't mind the roll per say as both rig have tied in cages, but the amount of damage it causes to parts and sheet metal.

Had a blast yesterday. Let the cleanup begin.

Hope you guys had a great time. I overslept and also was limping around all day with a stiff big toe (mtp joint).
See you guys at Jeep Beach!

Gotta throw a shout out to Kirk and AJ for the ridiculous fix. Where else can you wheel, break a hub and have a guy with the exact hub new in the box ready for you to buy?! AJ did the labor for a couple of rounds of ammo. Ha ha. Awesome group of guys!!

You imply as of that is not how welds should look. I like it that way, I can see the strength of the weld.
Guado

Lets just say the weld is as strong as the thickness of the steel being welded. //LMAO//

Can't blame a guy for trying! He crashed the meet up

Can't blame a guy for trying! He crashed the meet up
The problem, for me, is that if he is that discourteous to the club while he is trying to drum up business, how will he treat me after I have paid him for a service? Bad manners is the indicator of other issues.
However, he wasn't likely to have me as a customer anyways, so really no loss on his part with regard to my money.
-
Good point! I wasn't there, so he just came up and started talking to the whole group? Maybe business cards to pass out or something, but interrupting someone else's group that he is not part of , yeah maybe a little rude.
