I'm Game!

we rode up yesterday morning & rode all day... awesome conditions!!   ;D

cold, wet, icy, slick, muddy....man i loved it!!

I found a 2 hour pig trail to no where..

most of my old trails we there, & we found tons of new ones to boot....

I have keys to a few of the "road closed" forestry gates up on mulky gap side...don't worry, I have them  Legally,..lol

my ancestors have 4-5 old cemetery's up there.. they were some of the original settlers on that mountian,.. can still see some ruins of the old family sawmill etc..

they had to give the family keys so we can get to them & maintain the graves.

are yall going to hit Old Bucktown Rd and Amicolola Mountain Rd? I know Nimblewill is just gravel to the top but nice site seeing and some decent places to camp around the bottom.
Title: Re: THIS SATURDAY N. GEORGIA RIDE?
Post by: big94yj on January 26, 2009, 10:48:59 PM
i dont know the trails we were going to hit probably old bucktown road and if "thesouthernbird" heads up there with us we will probably follow him on the trails he knowsl. im waiting on a response from him. if  you would like to join us bigjerm we would be glad to have you. i have only been up to nimblewell once before and i dont know the area to well but bringing a friend with me wh o has a cabin at the base of nimblewell. i am still sorta new to wheeling but i have a wrangler on 35's and my friend has a ram w/ 3inch lift. i would like to meet some of yall up there saturday and ride together.  i would like to follow "the Southern Bird" on the trails he knows if he doesnt mind?
Title: Re: THIS SATURDAY N. GEORGIA RIDE?
Post by: TheSouthernBird on January 27, 2009, 07:59:35 AM
yea, I know nothing down around the Amicolola area,.. never road down that way.. but if someone's going that knows them, I would very much like to check them out,..

most of the trail & forestry roads I  know of, are up around beasley knob area & back over toward the blue ridge side..
never really had to use 4 wheel drive but in a couple of spots, but there were a few trails I didn't  attempt alone..
the little pig trail of wolf pen gap, would be hairy in a full size,.. major steep cliffs & drop offs over the edge.. had my passenger studdering a few times..lol

I noticed sunday most of gates to the graves were open except one,. I will try to get up to my grandfathers this week & get his key.. I am sure the site could use a cleaning & fresh flowers.

I will send you a pm with my info..

we could meet up around the Amicolola area I guess. & start there..

Do we have to have all the Required gear for this event? Im still short a CB and a jack other than my stock jack.
Title: Re: THIS SATURDAY N. GEORGIA RIDE?
Post by: BigJerm on January 27, 2009, 09:53:19 PM
thats up to those holding it. The gear list here is only for official rides but you will find most rigs in the 4x4 world have most everything we require.
Title: Re: THIS SATURDAY N. GEORGIA RIDE?
Post by: big94yj on January 27, 2009, 10:03:52 PM
no you dont have to have the required gear but would be good to have it. the cb is how we all communicate. you can go buy a hand held cb  for under $100 at northern tool (saw one today) and other places around town. i just recently got my cb and installed it. i would bring a tow strap but the trails that i have been on are not that bad that a good driver in a semi stock wrangler could do it. if you need i have a 48" highlifter jack that ill let you use and a tow strap.
***no you dont not need a CB***

here is a link to a service road right next to the church we met at. if you take a right out of the parking lot and go about 3 miles down the road it turnis into a dirt road and you go another couple miles up the road to the top of nimblewell mountian. from there you can go to two trails that fork off one to amicalola state park and another to old bucktown road.  we hit both of them.

were there actually any water crossings though? Best I remember of those trails it is only mud holes that have any water. Hard to find water crossings these days with the greenies claiming errosion all over the place. There use to be another section of trails called Anderson Creek ORV up there but they were just officially closed due to "erosion". I am sure it wont be long with the way Old Bucktown is all washed out... I have been on a few roads up around Lake Conasauga tha have small creek crossing but they don't go anywhere.

I looked at the link posted for pics and saw 2 big water xings. I just like the idea of doing trails like that more than rock climbs, just a personal preference.

How does Gulches compare to River Rock or this place in this thread?

Gulches is another park that has bypass and plenty to do. Most places like that are like river rock and morris mtn.

These are fun trails to do in 2 hours.. the river crossing was going through and turning around and coming back through.  Nothing extreme.

check out this site

http://picasaweb.google.com/Runyan1/GATrailRide09#

there are over 200 pics!

I have no idea where that's at but that's the kind of trails / water crossing stuff I am wanting to do. Nice pics, looks like everyone had a lot of fun.  {toast}

That JK looks great, what size lift and tires do you have on it?

Thanks, I have a 4inch superlift with 35x12.5 BFG's, everything clears great even with the sway bars disconnected.

when I had my Jk X on 35's with 4.10 gears I got somewhere around 11 in the city, 15 on the highway and that was old person driving. To get any speed on the hills while on the highway I couldnt run over drive. (The 15 on the highway was when I drove slow and kept OD on).

too funny, I drive old also, because I qualify.  It seems to get 13-18 with 3.73 gears.   I'm going with 4.88 or higher this summer so I'm sure it will get worse.

I have a 3 y.o. boy who loves to ride on the trails.  The wife agreed to go out to Durhamtown so we'll all be camping Friday night.  Hopefully there are some mild trails that they can ride along on.

Do you know if any other families are camping?

Good for you bringing the little one. My Son is 3 also and LOVES anything Jeep related and loves to wheel. Best co-pilot I could ever want!! And as for gears... I just went from 3.73s to 4.88s and the gas mileage is incredibly better with them. Go figure!! {toast}

The shop I was talking with said the same thing about getting better mileage, i thought they were just trying to sell them.  Can't wait to see the difference.

looking at the tempatures for this weekend my wife and the little co-pilot want to stay home, i think i'll give it a go with the stock gears for now.

My GPS and my speedo are like 2-3 miles off from each other. I know these screet turs are not true 33's. I bet when I put my Trxus's on it will be about right. All I know is the mileage is a ton better... if I keep it under 60 so the rpms are lower. I will be avoiding the expressways as much as possible, or keep it around 60. :P
