Title: Rice's Creek Offroad Park Pictures and Post Ride Discussion
Post by: mdo817 on April 18, 2009, 01:54:59 AM
I went up on Friday,(Drew and Kyle running late), got there and was met by Jason the owner, and a few of his friends. They were real cool people. I shot some pictures in the new obstical course that they cut Friday morning. I only made a few climbs before my junk broke again. Hydraulics are really in the not so distance future after I beef up the unibody, which I guess I cracked at D Town. Here is a link to the pictures.

Very cool park. Tons of trails and potential. To bad I only seen one of them. Lots of hardcore carnage today. I will go ahead and thank, Kyle, Justin, Drew, Daniel, & Alex for assisting in some way or another with getting my jeep back together.

BTW a little trail math for you guys.

4 x KM(2) = Traction

35 + 35 = 1...

Exploded Axle Shaft (pics to come)

Kyle also lost a ring gear & spider gears to the "C"-hole.

I agree Matt, I think this park is cool and will get better. Kyle blamed me for starting the carnage thing. I hope you got to talk with Jason before you left. Did you do tank trap also or just the rock gulley. Sorry I missed you and Daniel, but that's just the way it goes I guess. Did Kyle go a head and leave or did him and Drew spend the night again?

Looks like a cool place. Sounds like its pretty tough with all the carnage. Drew, that XJ still has a straight hood and some glass. Get on it! lol

Sorry about the carnage guys.  One mod leads to another.....  and on and on.

Mark, we had a trail leader that broke a trac bar mount he had patched and patched, so do a serious repair on that rig and get that hydro assist.  I would go with the redneck for sure, and they will modify your existing box.  Cheapest and has a great reputation.  Met those guys in Moab at the show.  VERY helpful.

Matt, sorry to hear about the axle.  Going to upgrade?

Kyle, oh no!  Not again!   :'(

I just see dirt, mud, and logs in the pics.  No rocks?

Oh Douglas there are rocks here. I think most of marks photos are of the very challenging obstacle course. They say it would take 8-10 hours to ride all the trails straight throuh here. There are some serious climbs  over here. One we looked down at the beginning of the day is going to be very hard. There are plenty of rocks, and really a series of ditch, gullies, etc. Almost reminds me of River Rock out of all the places we ride (terrain wise). This will be a great park and I will for sure be back (with some upgrads  ;D).

Here is a link to the pics I took.

Not many.

I also left out were daniel lost a bead. That was almost a youtube video in the making (involving, break cleaner, fire, high lift, ratchet strap and some coca cola  :o). He had some serious body damages from this same hole as well.

This is the stupid hole that most everyone had a bad day in.

How did you get home with an expoded axle shaft
Title: Re: Racing Streak Offroad Park Pictures and Post Ride Discussion
Post by: Matt on April 19, 2009, 10:44:51 AM
Fixed at the top of that hill. If your dumb enough to wheel 35s on a D35, you better be smart enough to keep spare shafts in the back of you white 99 TJ ;D. However I was not smart enough to keep a couple quarts of gear lube, and some RTV in the back. Thanks to drew for the rtv & lube, and thanks to kyles tool box, we had everything needed to get spare shaft in the TJ. My D35 carrier  has now seen better days. When kyle returns, he has some pics of the shaft and the repair. Not a clean snap at all there was tons of shards in the carrier from where this axle came apart.

Yeah, it sucks y'all didn't see much but there is a lot of rocks at this place.  I had fun even though we fixed rigs all day saturday.

so it turns out that when my exhaust got pushed into my shock it must have busted the valve body or something because every time the right rear hits a bump in the road the jeep bucks and bounces really bad. it sucks. ($25 fix or so but its still annoying till i get it fixed)

as far as the d-30 goes im just gonna buy another one. if anyone has a lead on a d-30 with 3.73 gears please let me know!

all in all i had fun and i agree that this park, given a little more time, will be awesome. thanks for all the help from alex (and the air tools), drew, matt and justin in gettin my junk back on the road. alex and i timed it and we only took 45 minutes to completely strip the inards out of my d-30 and have it back on the wheels...haha. (we've had some practice)

No hydro assist, I'm going to go full hydro. I don't need anymore stress on the front section of the unibody than the bumper, which acts as a cross member for my springs. Will start ordering parts more than likely this week. Thanks Alex for the info. I think I might have fractured my frame exactly where yalls carnage came from, when I drove of in there it felt like I just about stood the Jeep on it's nose, so I bumped the skinny when I got to the bottom. This place does have rock and will challenge any vehicle built.

Hey Kyle, if you could wait a couple of months without wheeling, I will be re-gearing this summer after I'm done with the tranny. You could get my front end with 3.73s and I could use yours for my regear. I still have the spiders for it too.

Looks like his carrier bearing was probably the culprit in both times. It was not even pressed on. You could slide it on and off with your hand.  :o

That had to be that place.  When I drove off down in there I was going to try and cut over to the right side that Kyle was trying to climb, but but front got down in the bottom and was all over the rocks, and my rear was still halfway up the hill.  Then I started to lose my air pressure and was running the risk of losing the bead, so I tried to back up the hill and kept getting stuck on the steps and ended up almost breaking Matt's arms and putting another beauty scar on my doors.  But my bumper ate most of the damage.  Those rocks are merciless.  But, all the more reason to make some sliders and a bumper.  When can we start Matt?  ;D

Got there early am sunday.  Spoke to the owner Jason and he advised me that everyone broke on the rock garden.  So, we put that off for another day(in fear of breaking) and hit some of the muddier trails.  The place was awesome and HUGE.  It had tons of fun things to play on and we had a blast.  Here are some pics and videos.  One is of some mud diving.

Wow.  Sounds like it didn't need to be pressed on.   :o :o :o    Sounds like a nice slip fit.

Sounds like the wrong bearing id or the shaft was worn down from a previous spinning bearing.  Easy fix with a bearing retaining compound (Loctite).  Good to use any time you're setting a bearing.

The only negative thing I can say about this park other than that douchebag hole, was the dirtbikes and ATVs.  These morons would drive 30 mph through "camp" because apparently it was the only straightaway there.  Then they'd turn around and fly through again... and again... and again... and again.  That was the only plus side to D-Town, all the dirtbike/ATV stuff was separated from the ORV trails.

We can have a Dana 30 melt, lol. I think I still have an LP30 housing I can chip in.

Well, according to engineering materials text book, steels start turning into liquid at 1147*C (2097*F) depending on the carbon content of the steel. Anyone have a REALLY REALLY hot furnace? :o

Quote
Mark ripped off the steering box.

The steering box ripped off again due to fatigue in the unibody at the steering box mount. I will be doing a weld/doubler repair to the area. Deleting the steering box so the only stress will be the bumper/spring mounts which are attached to the bumper. I'm ordering a cylinder tonight so while we are doing the frame repair we can start mocking up the hydro steering. This mod is mandatory anyway, for those who have ridden with me know I can't turn in a ball field anyway. I was really hoping to get by for a little longer without doing the mod, but here it comes. {toast}

SWEEEEEET. What ram and orbital valve did you go with?

You might as well truss the axle now since you have to build a mount for the ram anyway ;D

If you hold on to your drag link and tierod, I might take them off your hands this summer if the price is right.

I'm going to call a hydraulic co. in Greenville SC about the orbital, Jason and his buddy at Silver Streak told me about this co. I'm not sure how I would truss the front with the leaf perch built into the housing. If I don't wind up using the drag link and/or tie rod tubing for anything I'll get the price right for ya.

It was actually pretty cool, Fish and Drew went down it, I came up it. I don't really like going down, I made it through all the obsticals except one, it was a deep hole that took my right rear tire so deep as I was bringing the front out that I kept getting lots of air under the left front. I wussed and backed out after a couple of tries and drove around that hole. The last climb out was a nice steep climb also. It was cool run though.

Yeah, I definitely wanna make it back up to that place.  It seems like there's a TON of stuff up there.  But, hopefully I'll have a few more custom mods that could help out a bit.
Bring that new bottle of Rum and come on down, we will split it, then get out the sawzall.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... no need for a sawzall.  Just some tubing, bender, welder and a little bit o' time.  Seriously though, hopefully here shortly Matt and I will be able to slap together a nice new front bumper for me.  And sliders... and rear bumper with a tire carrier... yeah... hopefully.  But as far as the rum, hope you like Captain, 'cause he's loaded and ridin' with me, 'cause I keep forgetting to take it out of the truck.

If Donna's driving me home I might borrow a cup.

Well, you could always "borrow" a cup anyways, then Donna HAS to drive you home.   ;D
