Title: Ad-Hoc Nov 1 2009 Ride Discussion thread
Post by: Rockinwrangler on October 21, 2009, 05:11:23 PM
Thought I would start a discussion thread for the Nov 1, 2009 Ad-Hoc Ride..

Rabunjeeper said there is a place near the river crossing with room for 15 or so jeeps that we could stop for a lunch and some visiting time...  Bring your lunch.....

He said we would be there around noon...

so will any of this trip need 4x4 or will this be more of a gravel road drive?

It can probably be done in 2wd. I will no for sure this weekend. I haven't been through there since the 14+ inches of rain in the last month. It might be rutted out from the run off. There is one hillclimb you will have to have 4wd for but you don't have to go up it. I will post pics of my scout trip.

I might try and get up to do some riding.  should be a good weekend to check out the leaves.
I have been driving my jeep some lately, so I have the stock tires and wheels on it, should be great for a road trip.
I will have to see as it gets closer to next weekend.

i have been on the coleman river trail several times.  i have done it all in 2wd.  sometimes i stick in in low range and not lock the hubs though cause my old cj7 rides rough as hell.  i would rather just slowly crawl over the stuff than bounce over it.  the first time i went on this trail, i went with 3 bone stock wranglers.  one YJ and two TJs.

Cool, another new place to wheel... it's been a couple months and I am getting deprived!

From the sounds of it, this place is pretty darn mild eh? Still should be lots of fun! I haven't found out where exactly on the map it is, but it seems to be in North GA? I'll probably get a hotel Sat night.

definitely will be easy..  Mostly forest service rds..  Scenery should be great..  Hopefully it will be on the cool side also...  the meeting point is between Hiawassee GA and Clayton GA..  on hwy 76....

After we do this ride and end up in Hiawassee we may try to ride up Bell MTn..  we did last year..  Shouldn't be a problem if the gate is not locked...  I will try to check it out first...

By the way,  ...  Does anyone like boiled peanuts?????

Another reminder::  I am going to be up in Hiawassee until probably Wednesday or Thursday on vacation..   Probably going to ride Beasley on Monday or Tuesday if anyone is interested... I can do it either day..  I try not to keep much of a schedule on vacation so I am good for either day..  You can post here or send me a PM...  the rest of the time I will probably explore some more forest rds,,,

Those are not real boiled peanuts.  :P  They are dried and then boiled thru the year.  Dirty water.  Ugh.

These are FRESH dug peanuts, boiled, and frozen for keeping if they aren't fresh.  My girls love them.  Even the big that had b=never had a fresh one until she met me.  Hated them before.

O.k guys I made the abe gap trip today and got some pics for ya. I got side tracked in a side road and I didn't make it out til dark. So I didn't get a chance to go to hightower, but most of you have already been there anyways. I ran into a small problem on abe gap. There was a guy in there grading the road with a bull dozer that was contracted by the forest service. I talked with him and he said that he is hauling 152 loads of gravel in there this week. He said the road would be open next weekend. I guess I will go again on sat and make sure it's in o.k. shape. He had already scraped half of the road and it was muddy. Any comments on wether or not to go through this road is up to you all, let me know. thie only pics that aren't on abe gap are the ones with a long view of lake burton. My jeep is the black one and the green one is pilotjimmy. The pics of the creek isn't a creek, or it wasn't a couple of weeks ago. It is actually the road but from all the rain the creek has jumped out of the banks. Trout unlimited would love us riding up this wouldn't they? Click on the pics and blow em up.

That looks great!  Cant wait to get up there, only 3 more days and I am on the road.

Rabun-
If you want to go check it out on Saturday, I'm game.  I will be up there on Wednesday afternoon and any day is a good day for wheeling in my book.  The only day I have plans in Thursday, i need to do some work on a friends cabin.  But any other day I am open.
Is Beasley really that bad? Or are there trails I can fit into? Id like to go, but do not want to deal with any body work. And dont have the time to fab some sliders and body armour.

See you all soon!

I rode to hightower today to make sure everything is o.k. there and snapped a few pics. There is a f/s road off of hightower we can go out that has a big turn around are at the end of it. It dead ends and we have to come back out and there is probably 40 small mudholes we have to go through. Nothing you will need 4wd for but it will get your rig dirty. You can see what they look like in the pics but yall decide if it's something you want to do.

They won't need a tug. I did all of it in 2wd with the exception of the hillclimb on hightower and I had to hit in 4lo 2nd gear and it took me bout 5 tries to get all the way to the top. It was covered in wet leaves.

if you would like to meet up with me and some of the guys from my club and caravan up, you can get off 365 in Clarkesville.  we would be going up highway 197.  its a more scenic ride and probably shorter than going all the way to clayton first.

NorthGaX lives in buford so you will have to meet up with him first.  i live in clarkesville which is right off of 365.  i was suggesting that instead of going all the way up to clayton, yall could meet up with us in clarkesville and ride up hwy 197 to lake burton and the meeting spot.  probably shorter and faster than going up to clayton plus its a nice ride up into the mountains.  if yall want to meet up, send me a message and we can hammer out the details before sunday.

I am open for meeting on any exit along I-985.  My first thought is for me and swamprat to meet off of Friendship (exit 8) that way I can grab some breakfast for the wife and youngin.  Does Exit 16 have a McDonalds or Burger King?  What time would you want to meet off of exit 16?

They have both. But I would suggest Curt's off of Exit 16 for some real breakfast.  They have a drive through and breakfast bar.

Hey all!

Made it up yesterday afternoon, damn its nice up here!  Way better than FL!

I got all my work done up here, and my brother and I ran through Upper High Tower trail this afternoon.  There is alot of washout up there.  Nothing too difficult i think.  Coming up from the persimmon side, there will be a few spots that might pose a challenge.  Didnt get any pics, the camera battery was dead.

If anyone wants to go riding tomorrow PM me here, put a time and metting place in, I cant seem to reply to PM's.  Or a PH number soI can call.  I have limited cell service, but it seems text messages and emails come through pretty well.

Rabun, if you was to prerun on Sat, let me know where to meet you and what time works for you, I am definately up for it.

See you all soon

Just got back from pre-ride for tomorrow's ride...  It has been raining some but doesn't seem to be too bad.  There is one part of our planned trip that has been bulldozed this week.  We will probably miss this part due to the fresh clay on top..  Dooable but slick and steep and we don't want to have any problems.  I think it is suppose to be 39F for the low tomorrow so bring a jacket...  hahahaha..

Still meeting at 10am sharp...  Should be fun...

Here are some photos of our pre-ride...

Making sure I have this correct.... we are meeting at the intersection of GA-2E and US-76E, is that correct? I'll input that into the GPS. I am in Warner Robins area, looks like 3.5-4hrs travel time each way, thinking about heading up tonight and getting a hotel. If this isn't correct, what is a good place/intersection to use?

*Edit* - ok, I see Vickers Rd/GA-76 is a good intersection to use. Google Earth says almost 4hrs each way.... now I'm deciding to drive up tonight or just do it all tomorrow...

Andy, Mike, Mikes Dad, and the guy in the Cherokee(sorry forgot your name  {ehm})

It was great meeting you all today.  Had a great time!  Way different that what we get in FL, too bad it was so slick, piloting that 12000lb beast is way different in the slick mud up here, than the sandy trails back home!

I didnt get any pics today, was too busy trying to stay "out" of the ruts! LOL
Thanks for all the help today as well.

Mike-
Can you email me the pics of my truck please? It'll make a great addition to my folder. Thanks!

It was a lot of fun yesterday and great to meet everybody! Thanks for all the help.  {toast}

First time for me using 4wd or driving in a creek with the jeep.  {woohoo} So fun! The 4wd kept popping out of 4lo, dunno if it was me or if the BL bracket needs adjusting. I'll check that today after I fix my tire.

Picked up a nail on I-75 on the way home. 70mph in the HOV lane after going around a sharp curve and having the jeep start to feel like a weebly wobble was a bit nerve wracking.

Thanks Mike & Andy for stepping up and making this a successful ride. Very organized. Me and Jessica had a blast. I drove all the way home on 15 psi  :D

This will be an annual event for sure.

That was a fun and thoroughly enjoyable ride. Especially since I wasn't aware I was going 'till about 7:45 that morning. But I'm glad I did. It was a nice leisurely trail ride. No rock hopping or anything like that. Plus, actually driving down the river was fun. Hope we didn't wash too much sediment downstream to interfere with any fish, especially the majestic trout.

Hey Andy, is that trail over the mountain to the east of Clayton a hard one, or do you know any hard ones with rocks?

No doug, it's not hard and it's very short. There's nothing real hard up here left. Our last hard one got closed about 3 month's ago. I've been hearing about one up near the cherahala skyway around robbinsville nc (about an hour from here), called little buffalo, but I don't know if it's legal. I seen some awesome pics of it though. If you know anything about it, please let me know.

I've heard of it as well for 2 years, and I also hear it is a legal trail(like to confirm), and extremely challenging, especially if it's wet, or wet leaves.  I hear you climb a mountain, entering off a paved road and coming out up on the skyway.  Get us some directions!

Looks like I missed a good time.  {toast}

Get with Brian if you want details about Little Buffalo. Him and some buddies invited me to go a few months back, but I couldn't make it.

I am planning on doing this ride again SAT NOV. 7TH for those of us that missed it. If any one is intrested let me know.
As for the little buffalo, its really rough. AS in Tellico rough. Rocks on top of rocks with rocks on the side! Great fun in the Rhino but lots of winching on 33's. We rode all day there last year and never saw any posted signs and lots of Rock Crawlers and buggys.    pilotjimmy@yahoo.com

My pictures uploaded:

I'll post up some.

After something like 5 months, my GATR sticker finally arrived! I really like it, I suppose this is the new style? - very nice!

This is the last stop we made as a group, where we turned around. The dotted line is the GA/NC boarder :)

We stopped on the way back and I thought I saw a huge white thing pass by on the road and said it looked to be the "trail whale" tho he didn't ride with us that day. When looking at my pictures, it turns out I got a pic just as he was passing by, well, if it was him.... neat.

Here is a video of the "hardest" part, a muddy hill climb. You can hear my sweet house music  {cool}  About halfway up the Jeep got sideways a bit. Also can sorta hear the Dynomax cat-back.
