Title: MOAB 2011
Post by: DOUG on October 26, 2010, 11:34:55 PM
Is anyone interested in going in 2011?

Easter Jeep Safari is April 17-24

and

Memorial Day Weekend trip would be May 27-June 3.

Yes, and my answer was the same for the last 2 times I went... GOING TO BE TIGHT! ;D

Are you leaning toward EJS or May/June again?

I definitely want to make this one. As far as the dates, I've got mixed feelings. It would be a lot of fun during EJS with all the cool stuff, but I'm leaning towards non crowded and more riding.

I'm with Livingston on this one, EJS I'm sure would be a blast, but we would probably get more riding time on the May/June ride. Plus some of us can take advantage of the Memorial Holiday.

Yes, EJS is fun but less ride time and lots o people. I say we do what we did this year D.

EJS is crowded, but it is a great time to be in Moab with the vendors, show, raffle, and 1000+ Jeeps, but you can go and ride trails on your own by getting up early and beating the Safari onto the trail.  This way you have the best of both worlds, but you have to be flexible.

I have to be in Vegas the week after the Safari, so I'm looking at towing out for EJS, leaving the Jeep, fly home from Vegas, and back for Memorial Day.

Ben, what did you think about the cabin and location?  Prefer something else?  Hard to beat the price if we had 4 guys per.

I think I can swing it time wise and i'd love to go for either one of the dates. {toast}

I'd like to try and go again. Maybe this time I can make it out there in two days as planned :bs)

I'd vote for the May/June dates.

I would like to put my name in the hat for a passenger. Don't think the LJ is ready yet for Moab. How long of a trip?
Title: Re: MOAB 2011
Post by: DOUG on October 27, 2010, 12:45:55 PM
Its about 30 hours out and 27 back (beats me).

Its so far and so awesome, I like to have 2 days out, 2 days back, 6 trail days for a total of 10. Over Memorial Day holiday you can do this with only 5 days off work.

As long as I don't have to open another store. I will be at this moab event, but as a passenger/photographer.

Jerm, it is well worth it and you really don't need a super rig to wheel out there. Lockers are really all you need. I liked the cabin doug but like I said, got to start gathering the funds from somehwere and find a tower to get my jeep out and back. :P

I should be in a better spot this year to financially make it. If I can finish this trailer, I should be in.

I would think lockers and belly up for my jeep. Might just wait until the next year. Don't want to drive my jeep and no trailer. I already got 12 days off for a cruise so getting another 12 might be tough

A few of you guys are talking about maybe not beig financially capable of going this year, how much financially is it normally besides the gas and food?
Title: Re: MOAB 2011
Post by: Krawler00 on October 28, 2010, 03:09:03 PM
Well for me it's different since I have bummed a trailer spot with Dougie the last 2 times. But the best thing to do is look at where you will stay and figure out that cost, then food, then gas and spending cash. Gas is the biggest expense unless you stay in a hotel. We stayed at the campground in a cabin and it was not too bad. But you can camp primitively for around $10 a day at a few laces. Just find a place to shower. I left last year with 2000.00 in pocket and came back with $500.00. But I did go out to dinner, buy supplies, shop a bit and paid for a trailer ride. But everyone is different. START SAVING NOW!! I am already late with my funds so it will be tight this year if I go... hopefully.

This year I was out over $2500 of which Ben shared greatly in the fuel expense and I provided a ride for him, pappa, and ole yeller. It aint cheap to get there and back so if you can share a ride and expenses and sleep on the dirt, you're way ahead.
4 bunk cabins with a shower house are about $80 a night total.
Book early.

Its like going to disney when you are 8 years old after you"ve been to the walimart parking lot fair.
Title: Re: MOAB 2011
Post by: Calvin on October 28, 2010, 08:10:05 PM
Not to beat a dead horse, but figure in some breakage money in there as well. It is not a rare occasion to need some sort of spare part while you're out there. And whether you tow or drive, its ~1750 miles one way you're putting on your rig. I budgeted for about the $2000 range like Ben said, and then my tow rig blew a turbo coupler about 600 miles into day one resulting in an additional $600 spent on the trip. {boohoo}

That being said: the three days I did get to spend in Moab wheeling--TOTALLY worth it. The trails out there are nothing like you see around here and the pictures don't do any of it justice. If you have an opportunity to go, GO. But plan it out in advance like the others say--from where you'll be staying to how much will be spent on food, gas, etc.

Man, I am getting excited just thinking about the next trip. Hope I can go again.

Yeah, me too.

On the way back i always say I'm done, and then a few months roll by.....

And we always say we're leaving early on a certain day, and the night before comes, and we roll.... (can't sleep anyway)

And we always say we're sleeping in a hotel 2 nights on the way out and then we just keep rolling until it makes no sense...

Ben, I've found other places to stay...  3 bedroom condos, a "compound" of old houses right of the strip of which 2 have 3 bedrooms, 6 max, for $275 a night/$46 pp a night, with nice living room and kitchen, but nothing beats the 4 bunk cabin at $20 pp a night, even if you do have to go to the bath house.

We really got lucky this year and the 90 degree heat hit the day we left.  Brutal almost 100, and the high the entire time we were there was 89.  Maybe next year too.

Sounds like most of you guys want to go Memorial Day and ride Saturday to Friday.

So the big question is...

Will my 7.3 Excursion pull a double with a JK and a TJ...  I'm afraid not, but want to know!
Title: Re: MOAB 2011
Post by: DOUG on October 28, 2010, 09:50:57 PM
This would be the dream plan.

If I could arrange my work travel so I could fly in and out  and move the Jeep on the weekends, and find guys through JK Owners and Pirate to store the Jeep (have a place a few hours east of LA with Larry at Poison Spyder and near Anaheim with Currie, but would need one of the guys near the Rubicon to help) then this could become the plan.

The problem with the Rubicon is that it doesn't warm up and snow melt until July.  Might be my last chance though.

Seen Moab, done all the hard stuff, ready for the rubi {letseat} I would love to take a trip there and just take 3-4 days to ride it, camp, then head home. Just need a trailer and a tow rig... that pulls better than the sub :P

That trip to rubicon and Moab looks strangely familiar... Bet there is a thread on here with lots of info and talk  ;D

I still plan to do it but it will be probably 2012 for me before I got the funds and jeep capable of doing it. Not sure a tow rig is in my future so for now I got to build for trail and long distance DD.

Before doing all that driving in the Jeep, I would consider shipping it (almost same as fuel costs) to Denver, fly in, do Moab and then drive to the Rubicon, and then ship it back from Lake Tahoe, and fly home.

By the way, our roads in GA are AWESOME.  Some of the roads on the North and South routes SUCK.

Although the Rubicon is awesome, I would suggest Sierra Trek.  The Rubicon does have some challenging sections, but most of it is very tame.  Beautiful scenery though!!  If you want something a little more challenging, Sierra Trek is where it's at.

It is cool to say "I've run the Rubicon" though!!

I can't remember who all went last year. Which trail party is better for you?? Everyone should definitely get to Moab at least once in their life. That's tough Larry.  They won't let you plan vacation far in advance, like a cruise, etc?

Personally, I think the trip we made at Memorial Day last year is the best way to go for crowds, weather, housing costs, etc.

Training classes for me cause more problems than anything else. A 3-5 day training class for me means that the week before and week after are hell at work.

Hey Billy,

I will be out in Colorado for almost 3 weeks in June (6/17-07/05) if you want to hook up and do some riding. I willn't have either of my Jeeps, but I will have a friends mildly build Rubicon at my disposal. We're planning getting a lot of climbing in and I'm bringing one of my mountain bikes to ride the slopes style stuff.

Awesome. Where are you staying? My dad works at Keystone and they have awesome trails there.  Every thing from long CC to really gnarly downhill.  There are alot of Jeep roads/ trails in and around Summit County also.  When I go out in the summer I usally go around the Fourth of July because most roads do not open until that time.

Sounds like you will now!  As of now, I am planning this itinerary:

Wednesday, May 25th-      Depart 6PM
Friday-                     Arrive MOAB PM
Saturday-                     Pritchett's Canyon/Behind the Rocks (White Knuckle Hill)
Sunday-                     Moab Rim and Hells Revenge (Hells Gate/Escalator)
Monday-                     Rusty Nail/Golden Spike
Tuesday-                     Cliffhanger
Wednesday-                     Top of the World
Thursday-                     Metal Masher (Widow Maker)
Friday-                     Depart Moab for home (optional wheel 1 more day)
Sunday-                     Arrive home

I could not get the cabin we got last year for the full week, and only got Sunday-Saturday.  Memorial Day weekend has the place pretty well booked up.  I am looking for a Friday-Saturday place, but....

Here is the list I have so far:

Doug, Linda, Madison, and Megan
Mike (Livingston)
Matt
Adam
Jeremy     (BigJerm)
Billy
Randy     (RanRyn)
Chuck      (Trailabite)
Kent and Charlene

If I can make this trip happen then yes hopefully locked front / rear with belly up. Got to have a trailer to get me out there. I spent 2 years in construction driving and co-driving my brothers 2500 with a 20 ft trailer so I can co-drive out there.

Mike let me know about the trailer situation. Ill see if I can get off from work and the wife.

That's good and something i'm sure you want anyway after having owned a Rubi.

You'll enjoy the trip a lot more, and require a strap a lot less if you're locked F&R for these trails.  There are places you don't want to be spinning and bouncing around.  Some of the obstacles have bypasses, and some very long bypasses, except Pritchett's where there are sometime choices, but no bypasses, and then there's Cliffhanger, and it's only 300' down where you need lockers.   ;D

Calvin, Ben, does 300' sound right?

Well, I might be able to swing this trip but without the jeep :'( Funds won't be anywhere near ready for a haul out, but it does not matter. I will take a passenger seat anyday out there. I will be the official spotter/ photographer ;D Somebody save me a seat! {letseat}

Got a few nice seats all warm for you. Just take your pick, even the one with the wheel and pedals.
Don't you give up my seat, we will have issue's.  :D

I seem to remember it being about 300 but feeling a lot longer haha. But Doug is right, locked front and rear out there you'll be AMAZED at what your jeep just walks up. *Note: Walks is a relative term while on trails like Pritchett's.

What is the break down in costs...i.e.gas, rooms,...etc?

You can go cheap on food and housing by camping or splitting a cabin or a condo, and eating from Sams/Costco out of a cooler, and a grill.  Here are the hard costs to consider:
- Housing: ~$500 for 7 nights splitting a condo 3 ways if you do it in advance and negotiate.  You can camp primitive for about $10 a night.
- Optional hotel 1x each way: $200
- Food: 2-3 days out, 2-3 days back, Cooler of cold cuts and drinks, trail cooler every day, and some eating out for $250-$400
- Fuel:  1780 miles for 3560/ 14 mpg towing diesel x $3.50 = ~$900.( We got 10 mpg towing double and and spent $1250.00)
- Jeep Fuel:  About a half tank a day average or $40 for $280

So for 1 person:

Primitive trip:  $1500

Condo trip realistically:  $2300 - $2800 with no shopping  ;D

When I get a trailer and make this trip again, I will be camping. There were some really nice spots right on the Colorado river. They had a bathroom and running water aka, toilet and faucet, but it would work fine. I like to rough it anyway and it would be great to chill by the fire every night. If you can keep out of town and buying stuff you can do it on a budget. But it's hard to keep out of the brewery and other food joints. Good eatin there. I will miss not having the jeep this year but anyway I can get out there is fine by me!! {letseat}

With the price of gas going through the roof, it's wait and see for me. It will cost me another 400-500 bucks if gas is over $4/gal. Unless I can get a rider who will share gas cost........ Maybe 1/4 of $$ would be good. that's only 400-500 bucks. oh well........wishful thinking.....
fixed it. had 1/3 $$

I guess because it will be our first time out there. But, I am not going to worry about the price of gas until I get home and have to make the payment to the card. I say this because of what I have heard and seen on this forum about the place. I want to be able to say that I have been there. I can count on one hand the amount of people I know here in Florida that have made this trip. They have told me no matter what I need to go and I will not regret it.

Dearest Most Sympathetic Boss-Man,

I have recently found that much to my dismay, that I am suffering from a rare form of flu.

As you know, I am usually at the Top of the World, but lately have been feeling more and more like Hell's Revenge.....so I went to visit my doctor last week (Dr. Cliff Hanger).

He performed the very painful Golden Spike  &  Metal Masher tests on my Fins & Things, and lab results have indeed confirmed that I have the dreaded Moabitus.

It is unbearable at times, as I feel as if I have ingested some bad Potato Salad and been bitten by a Poison Spider.

I am also experiencing some problems with my Secret Spire and my Hidden Canyon....but I will spare you the details.

The doctor has also recommended that I stay secluded from others, so I will be laid up for the duration on my Rainbow Terrace from Behind the Rocks.

He has also put me on a strict diet of Onion Creek soup and Chicken Corners sandwiches.

I expect to feel much better, and be returning to work by April 25th.

Thanks for your attention,

Dang Chuck! I am out as well. Too much time off work too close to my family vacation. And no $. G, it would not be good out there in the colder months. Snow, ice. Next year it will be on.

Ben,

We are thinking on going to either Flat N Nasty in MO or to the Super lift park in Hot springs Arkansas over the Memorial day weekend. Both of them have something going on.

October is iffy and cool.  November is snow everywhere.

I wouldn't try a wheelin trip to Moab from October through mid-March due to iffy-ness and cold. Just my .02.

I've been to Moab over Thanksgiving and had a blast.  The last day we were there we got a few inches of snow though.

That's cool if you are going to be there for family, but I wouldn't drive out for wheeling that time of year.  I bet it can be a lot of fun when the snow starts falling....

Are you still doing a Rocky Mtn trip in July?

Well I hate it for the folks that are gone or going, but the weather for the EJS looks less than desirable.  Makes me feel a little better about not being there.

The JKO's were nice enough to show two TJ's...one had his winch line out and the other didn't make it up the obstacle(or at least they didn't show it) {swords}
