This is gonna make for one hell-of-a spring break. We're goin on a cruise March 7-12, and then come back and squeeze in a wheelin trip on the weekend.  {toast}

Just as exciting... dropping the XJ off for gears and locker the day before I leave for the cruise--picking it up in time for RR!  {letseat}

I had them on Sunday, but I couldn't get over 40 MHP (Ha LOOK JIMMY) without some wobbles.  So, my spare wheel should be in today and I'm gonna have them all balanced and I should have them back soon.  Then I'll get you some pics... I want 'em back on pretty bad!!  These little Michelins are rather embarrassing.

There is never a problem finding fresh mud down here.  I try to stay out of it every chance I get.

I ran into a small problem about campsites at RR.  I reserved one for myself.  I am not sure if dad will be able to come.  If he does we will bring his camper if not I will have to bring mine but anyways, I will definitely be there..  It is about 4 hrs from here.  I will camp friday and saturday night...

Doug you are always welcome to come down to ride in the mud..  Our hunting club is about 1500 acres.  Plenty of mud and some pretty cool ditch crossings.  Pretty boring when you are used to Telico, Moab, Morris Mtn., Harlan County, and Windrock etc...

I am on vacation this week.  trying to kill the death wobble. Installing a adjustable front track bar tomorrow.  Hope it works..  Death wobble is hard to control when you are flat towing behind the camper..  hahahahahahah...

{ehm} Quit worrying about where you ate lunch and finish the XJ... Actually if you're planning on working on it this weekend and need a hand, give me a call, I'll ride up for a day and help wrench.

{btt} I really wish this wasn't the weekend I'm headed to Pensacola. I've been itching to go wheeling lately.

Primitive camping is free and there is plenty of space so you don't have to worry about reserving a spot.

Flagators: yep there are trees but at the edge of the camp grounds. Otherwise it is just a WIDE open field. Normally though we camp by the trees for the sake of fire wood.

To give those who have not been there an idea...

I plan to come.... anything specific i need to bring or know it will be my first event.

Since it's your first ride and it is only 2 weeks away, we're not gonna expect you to have all this stuff by next weekend, but here is the required trail gear to ride with us. http://www.gatrailriders.com/GTRForums/index.php?topic=2395.0

Tow points are a must if you're gonna be trying some difficult stuff. CB radios are very important also because we use them to communicate on the trails. If you have anymore questions, post them up in the Discussion thread for the ride here:

http://www.gatrailriders.com/GTRForums/index.php?topic=3266.0

Just another reminder that this is a check-in thread. Only post if you plan to attend.

Hey all, new to the forums but would like to check RR out - stock TJ Sport.

Looking at the map it is about an hour from me, I don't have camping gear (yet) so if I went it looks like I would be driving home at the end of the day. This is Friday-Sunday? Any set plans on Fri, Sat and Sun? If I was only able to make it all day Saturday, would that be ok?

Alright, I'll have to check it out! Starting a new job at the moment and not sure what shift I'll be on, which would determine what happens Friday.

So there is no set time? Everyone just shows up when they get there?

We usually hit the trails between 9 and 10. But, if you get there later its no biggie to meet up with us. Especially at River Rock where all the trails dump into one central location.

Hey guys, if you haven't ridden with us before, I'm the trail ride organizer for this event. If you have any questions about this trip, don't hesitate to ask.

If you plan on attending please remember to sign into the check in thread here, so we know to expect you.

http://www.gatrailriders.com/GTRForums/index.php?topic=3265.15

And feel free to give me a call if you are having trouble finding the park, or you just want to let us know you're coming and we should expect you. I'll be out there all day Friday-Sunday and should always be pretty close to my phone( unless my Jeep has me looking at the sky/ground... in that case I may have to call you back   ;D  )

Is your antenna good, and mounted properly?  What is your SWR?  Don't tell me you don't know!  Last time I saw your antenna at MM it ws hanging off at about 45 degress.  It has to be vertical to create use the ground plane and reach further than 50 feet.

we have tried 3 different locations (all vertical and well grounded) and 2 different mounting brackets and still cant get a swr below like 4. it would barley register on the meter. his radio is shot.

Ah man, that is way too nice!  :)  Thanks man. Well hey, I really appreciate the gesture, but I can't accept it. It's something I should have purchased awhile ago after all the other fixes failed, but it just pissed me off that it was working fine for awhile and then all of a sudden just wouldn't get range worth a darn or measure on the SWR. I've got a little money to buy one right now, so I can't let you give me one.  {no} Thanks though man!  :)  Can you return it? If not I'll pay you for it at River Rock. Does it have a PA output?

We've had good ground on the antenna. I don't think you can mess the antenna up, but I'm no expert on radios. We're gonna throw Kyle's radio in my Jeep this weekend to make sure it's the radio. If it is, I'd be glad to pay you for that Midland you bought Mike...

If his radio won't register, we'll make sure the ground is good. If the ground is still good, I guess I'll buy a new coax. This simple thing is turning into an ordeal  ::)

Same here man!  {toast}  haha

So Kyle and I swapped his radio into my Jeep today and it wouldn't register on the SWR either. I'm thinking since I've tried so many grounds it's gotta be my cable, but what could be wrong with it? It doesn't have any cuts that I can see, but for awhile it was getting closed between the tailgate and the tub (It's not anymore). I looked over that area and there are no kinks or anthing, but who the heck knows. I gotta get a volt meter I guess and see if the ground is good. If it is, I'll buy a new coax I suppose.

Nope, didn't think about using Kyle's antenna. How can those things go bad though? There's nothing physically wrong with it as I can tell. It's a 4' Firestick adjustable tip. I'll try using Kyle's though and see what happens.

It could be 1 of a thousand.  The wire that is wrapped around the antenna may be broken.  Check all of your connedtions.  Especially if you are using a spring and or your antenna mount may be loose or something.  I have know of some antenna's that had to be grounded.  Some come from the factory with an external ground wire that you can ground back to the mount.  When you turn the radio on do you get squelch when or is it quite??

You can take a jumper wire and hold it to the base of the antenna and then find a good ground on the jeep..  If you hear a difference on the radio this could be the problem.

You can also buy a Francis antenna that needs no adjustment for about 18 bucks at most t-stops..  I have a 4' and I have no problems at all.  Unless no one has said anything.  I use a Cobra all in one and I am not too impressed but it serves the purpose and it saves space.

When I drove a truck I ran a Cobra 29 Limited LTD Classic with dual francis antennas and a 300 watt linear..  Could talk about 12 - 15 miles on a clear day.

I run a small uniden and a firestick on the camper and it does okay.  If you don't have it figured out by River Rock I will be glad to help check it out.  I have a spare firestick in the shop that I have used before.  I can bring it and see if it helps. i may also have some coax.  If so I will through it in the camper..

One thing for sure..  It is only about 3 componets..

Radio, Coax, Antenna..  easy uh....

Just some ideas...

Will, I have 3 magnetic antennas here, and they all have very low SWR on a Jeep hood.  It's simple way to go, but I hope you haven't damaged your radio.  The hobby shop in lawrenceville has primo stuff, with tunable antennas in every length you could want, so let us know if ya need something.

all good things to look at, plus one that i have missed is the little plastic washer under the antenna if it's crushed out the signal might not be even making it to the antenna.  =ing high SWR

They were through the speedway ticket office online. They still had tickets for $39 for adults and $16 for students available. There's not a bad seat at that track. You might not be able to see pit road from those price tickets, but they have jumbotrons everywhere.

Just checked online and it looks like they don't have the cheap ones anymore. I would call the ticket office and ask about a military discount. I bet they'll give you one. NASCAR loves the military. You can also probably pick some up pretty cheap from scalpers. They were going for about half price at Daytona.

That's cool,  I have never been there and I am excited to take part.  I just don't want it to be like the mud bog we all participated in with WILL as our trail guide.  4 hrs is a long drive for a mud bath...  besides I have a set of week a/t's that need to be upgraded..  one day maybe but for now I will have to slide through life..  hahahah

I plan on arriving Fri night hopefully before dark.

There is no mud that we have to go through to get to the fun stuff. If you get your Jeep in some super deep stuff you will not be foll0wing me  {nln}  It's pretty slick red clay, and there will be a little bit of sliding and mud on the trucks, but it should not hinder the fun.

I think it is this push button sway bar disconnect... No longer have to crawl under there with wrenches and get you to stand on one side so I can disconnect the link.

That's what's gotten you to stop going on rides?  Because I won't jump up on your bumper anymore?  You should've said something.  I would've jumped all over it at Morris Mountain.   ;D

What is the PA feature on a CB used for?

I see in the list that front and rear tow points are needed, my TJ has the stock front tow hooks. I have a pair of hooks from a Blazer I was going to try and install in the back, but I am in the process of installing my CB (drove all the way from Wartown to ATL to find 4wheel parts is closed on Monday!) Anyway.... are (lack of) rear tow hooks something that would definitly not allow me to run? Lots to do but running out of time...

Do you have a rear tow hitch? PA stands for public address, and if your radio has that output you can connect a speaker horn to it, allowing you to talk into the mic and have your voice projected from the speaker. They're not needed for what we do, but they sure are fun!

Nevermind, I checked your new member's thread and saw the hitch in the pictures. That will work fine as a rear tow point. If you come to River Rock you can chck out Kyle's (Rowingfish87)s setup with a d-ring in the hitch. It makes hooking up a strap or winch cable a lot easier.

Yeah, I know about the public address, I just didn't know what the point of hooking a speaker horn to it and talking into it was for... I guess it could be fun for just messing around tho. My B does not have it, but it does have NOAA weather band, which is something I wanted... $40 new tho so it's no big deal.

I do have a hitch, but it is only a class I hitch, the smaller (1-1/4"?) size, not 2" and it is only rated at 2,000lbs. I don't know if they make anything for that size, or if the receiver would even be able to handle the weight of the Jeep in a stuck situation.

Fisher (who has been my co-pilot at Tellico and Morris Mountain with us before) is coming down to ride and his 21st birthday is Friday night...  :-X

And only a 30% chance of rain Saturday with hi temps around 65... might turn out to be a good day of wheeling if there is no rain.

I hope it doesn't rain.  But I never go with the weather man's forecast...what I do is wake up, see what it looks like outside.  So, I'm just gonna play it by ear.

Couple questions...

1.  Is anyone planning on riding Friday night??
2.  What kind of food are you cooking Will??

I wasn't sure if you were cooking.  Adam & Matt provided burgers and dogs at Morris Mtn..  What's up..??

Also,  I will ride some easy stuff FRI night if possible and definitely Saturday..  I will see what shakes out for Sunday.. ie..  weather, carnage, etc..  drive home Sunday..

A LITTLE INFO ON THE RIDE THIS WEEKEND

First off, a couple of house keeping points,

*We will be on channel 7 on the radios.

*Bring your own food and beverages. I usually take the cheap route and buy a loaf of bread, a packet of ham, (a bag of chips if I'm doing good  :D ), a 24 pack of off-brand waters, and a 12 pack of brews for around the campfire.

*Plenty of room for tents. There are bathrooms and warm showers as well.

*FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN TO RIVER ROCK AND DO NOT HAVE A WAIVER ON FILE...
-- Please download, print off, and bring a copy of the waiver to the park. When you arrive, find me and I'll take them up. You can find it here: http://www.riverrockorv.com/park/waiver.php

-- A reminder that the riding fee is $50 per rig for the weekend or $35 if you're only staying for one day CASH ONLY.

*DIRECTIONS AND PARK ENTRANCE...

--Directions: http://www.riverrockorv.com/park/index.php

--Now once you're on Pebble Hill Rd you will go about 3.5 miles. The entrance to the park will be a dirt road on your left. There is a very small sign that says "River Rock" in red that you will probably not see until you're on the dirt road. There is also a blue, 2'x3' Fabtech sign in the Trees. If you come to a dead end, you have gone about 2 miles too far. Just drive slow after the first couple miles on Pebble Hill and you should find the entrance fine. As most of you know, a lot of GPS devices don't like the country and this place is no exception to that rule. Follow the road signs. Once you're on the dirt road you will see the check in shack with a big "BFGoodrich" banner over it that they use for big events. Drive on past that and keep going straight. This is TRAIL 1 and you will follow it all the way back until you get to the main camping field. It is very big. Follow down to the back left-hand corner as you come in and look for the rigs and introduce yourself, say you're here for the GATR ride. After all the intros and stuff, if you have any questions about airing down tires or anything, don't hesitate to ask. We have a very knowledgeable group of guys.

*FRIDAY

-- Riding starts at 10:00 AM.  :)

*SATURDAY

-- Group ride begins at 10:00 AM. During this ride we will be riding trails that have bypasses for all the harder obstacles. We do not want anyone to feel like they have to try stuff they're not comfortable doing. Anyone with a 4x4 will be fine on these trails. There are plenty of obstacles and climbs to challenge every rig though, but only try what you feel comfortable doing. This ride will be pretty slow paced considering the amount of rigs and a lot of guys will like to try the harder lines which require a spotter. If the group stops to watch somebody on an obstacle, feel free to hop out of your rig and come watch, but try not to block the trail so that other rigs can get by.

-- After lunch we'll split into groups based on rig capabilities. We do this because smaller groups allow us to move faster and see as much of the trails as we can.

MOST IMPORTANT: Everybody have a great time and try not to do anything destructive. We are very fortunate to have places like River Rock to ride legally and have such a great time at, so respect Steve and his property.

-- If anyone has anymore questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Now, Let's go 4-wheelin' !!!   {letseat}

Yeah, but at least whenever we're standing by a fire I was parked in a chair sleeping. Can't do that drivin' the trails.

Will people be wheeling on Sunday or is it only Friday/Saturday?

I don't get out of work until 3, which means I wouldn't get to RR until 5PM or so on Friday, would it be worth it to go that late on Friday and spend the night, or just arrive Saturday morning?

A friend/co-worker will be joining me, his folks have a lake cabin on one of the lakes in the Milledgeville area, thats where we will be staying for the night(s)

Looks like there is a good chance it'll rain this weekend, I suppose that'll make everything a bit more interesting.

I just got done installing my CB system, it has been a bit of a pain. I have a firestik cut to tune antenna, but haven't tried to tune it yet, I don't think I am picking anything up as I just get static, even on 19 (I live within 1-2 miles of the interstate - should be picking up truckers) Antenna is mounted on the spare tire holder, I ran a seperate ground wire and sanded away the paint from the bottom side of the hole for the antenna, the piece with the threaded part sticks up thru the bottom, then the nylon washer then metal lock washer then the upper piece.... is this correct? If I can't get it working maybe somebody could help me set it up? I bought a power/SWR meter as well, haven't hooked it up yet, trying to get it to pick something up first. Nobody here has a CB to test with. My CB also has weather band, and I don't pick any of the channels up.

Then we went to test em out at the new rec park near the river where there's a pile of good sized rocks. Of course I got to showing out the day before our ride  ::)  put a nice dent in my trans pan and ripped the boot off my driveshaft.  {no}  This one guy came to watch and said, "You know it's better to air your tires down for the rocks." ... but he didn't really want to stay and chat. Said he used to have a Bronco on some, "big turs"  though ;D

Anyways , can't wait for tomorrow   {toast}

If anyone has some extra firewood laying around, we'd really appreciate it if you brought some. Well, I wouls appreciate it.  ;D Cause I've gotta cut and replace what we burn from Steve's stash. Don't break your back over it though, just if you have some handy and you've got the room.

I was like, "hey, are you ZAG? ... is that your Rubicon?" but it wasn't you  :D   Yeah, we had just finished putting Kyle's sliders on and really wanted to flex the Jeeps out for a second. Ya'll want fire wood? My house is on a wooded 1/2 acre that I am in the process of clearing out, I've still got some cut up wood laying around taking up space (I used to cut the trees up and burn them, now I pull them to the road with the tractor and the city takes/cuts up/chips the entire tree... any size) I'll bring whatever I can gather up from around here.

As for the CB... I got it working... I did more sanding underneath the drilled hole for the antenna, it picks up weather band now, as well as CB channels, well atleast 19, I can hear the truckers (took a drive down the interstate to Pilot for more CB stuff) I tested my SWR and on channel 1 it is around 2.7, channel 20 it is around 3.4 and channel 40 it is up to 4, which I know is too high. I haven't tuned the antenna yet... I still don't understand how I tune it, I removed the cap and there is no visable wire, do I actually use a hacksaw and cut off a small section of the top of the antenna then put the cap back on? I never set up a CB before, I've used hand held FRS on previous meets and car get togethers (cars - not Jeeps tho)

The CB install took alot longer then expcted to install and setup, so I never got around to mounting the tow hooks from a Blazer in the rear of the Jeep (plus there dosen't appear to be a good spot on the frame to mount them) so if it's alright with ya'll, it looks like my class-I receiver hitch will be my rear tow point... It bolts to the frame at 3 locations on each side, so if needed I suppose as long as it is straped near either side and not the middle, it should be OK. It is the lowest point in the rear of the TJ tho, so it'll be the first to hit rocks... hopefully it survives - I actually use it... I suppose if it gets damaged tho it'll be an excuse for the LoD rear bumper w/ 2" receiver and clevis mounts I like :)

BTW, I'll be passing stright thru Macon (I live in Byron) I'd be more then happy to pick up the left behind items and bring them :)

Your receiver should be fine as a rear tow point for this weekend if you even need it. The front hooks are stout and that's usually what we hook to anyways.

While I was gone I had a few things added to the jeep... so I'll be a little more capable this time out.

At any rate, we should be there sometime before dark tomorrow (friday) and we'll be stayin till sunday. We'll be stayin in the cabin out there. So, unless something changes, I'll hit ya'll up on channel 7 tomorrow evening.

Cool, when will you be coming through Macon? I'll meet you some place when you're coming through.

I get out of work at 3, I gotta do a few small odds and ends to the Jeep (mostly remove the drop hitch/ball from the reciever - it's stuck in... may have to get creative) then remove the back seat, line the cargo area with plastic and load the firewood (I know... it's gotta get bed-lined!) I am thinking I should be passing thru Macon around 4:30, maybe 5.... PM me your number and I'll give you a call in advance to let you know what the status is, and we'll find a place to meet.

:) I enjoy acts of kindness. Anyway, ya'll are the ones that gotta put up with a newbie when it comes to 4x4... I've lightly wheeled my open diff 2WD Isuzu Amigo... other then that and riding along other times, it'll be a first - very excited.

It looks like I will be getting to RR Friday evening around 6 or so, Weather we get some wheeling in or not it should be lots of fun! I will be sleeping off-site tho, so I don't know how late I'll stick around for.

Anyway, in my short period of Jeep ownership, I've already got stuff to sell, if anyone is interested I can bring them along.

I've got the plastic chrome grille inserts in very good condition, $25 takes them:

http://www.quadratec.com/products/13131_00.htm

I have 7" OEM-style fender flares, 4-piece set, $100, very good condiiton. I got these because I thought I was going to get 33x12.5x15 tires next, but I am going to stay smaller for now and get 31x10.5x15, I think when I do go to 33's, I'll stick with 10.5" width, so these will just be sitting around for a long time.

http://www.quadratec.com/products/12510_503_07.htm

Also, my hardtop, if serious about it let me know, I can bring it and we can work out a price.....

My neighbor is coming down Saturday with his brother. Matt is 21 and his brother is still in high school. The younger one has a TJ on 33's and never wheeled it. Matt's got a really nice 86 Chevy 4x4, but he's not bringing it.

It should be fun creating two more monsters, in addition to the other new guys we have on this run.  {toast}

lol, my idea wasn't that far off.... was going to get one of the tow straps, wrap it around the hitch, then a sturdy tree, put the Jeep in 4-lo and see who wins :) I really had to wail on it to go in (has surface rust, I did spray oil in it too) but I was sorta in a hurry to get the Jeep ready to tow my trailer because I needed it.

It should be fun creating two more monsters, in addition to the other new guys we have on this run.

Yea, I will help you, since you helped create my addiction. It will be fun.

And by the way Mike D, I think you are scared of the new line on the hill climb that you are using against our favorite S.O.F. Man up and show us it wasn't luck without lockers. LMAO

He** no you have a Rubicon, you can do it. Whats up Jerm 'fraid to run it? I'll give you $5 for gas if that's the problem.JK

Haha I may have some lockers but I still cant follow you big guys! I want to see some obstacles! I learned the hard way with Tellico... never saw the Bus, Helicopter or Guard Rail...  :'(

GIve me the number, Donna and I have been working that same schedule since we have been married. By the way it works well, some times we meet in the road and flash our lights at each other. I love my night shift and would not trade it for nothing.

Jerm, now you have a lift, and you know RR has by passes. You should see some of the stuff Kyle has done down there, no lift, open open on 31" tires. Don't be scared just do it. So I guess you are really feeling sick and we will see you in the morning?

With all this "guaranteed" rain looming over the weekend, I think Matt and I are gonna sit this one out.  Looks like we'll be in the garage pulling out a dead 2.5L.   You guys have fun and be safe.

That sounds fun. Is it permanently engaged or disengaged now?

dis-engaged. i think its been gone a while. yesterday he was winching a truck onto a trailer for a buddy of ours and the coolant was boiling over. it did the same thing this morning. so him and my buddy drew pulled it and are replacing it as we speak.

I have been trying to talk someone into riding down with me, but so far I haven't found anyone.   They are all scared of the rain and I hate driving down by myself.
